Cortland, NY
Proposed Build-Out: Supercenter
Principle Contact: Jamie Dangler --
Wal-Mart is threatening to do irreparable environmental damage to the sole source aquifer in Cortland, NY by placing a massive store in an area that would cause massive damage to the local water supply.
Cortland has a significant history of fighting off unwanted and inappropriate intrusions to their community, having taken and won a fight against a proposed nuclear facility all the way to the Supreme Court. Now, CAPE Cortland is fighting Wal-Mart’s proposal to ruin an environmentally irreplaceable site.
CAPE Cortland is challenging the validity of Wal-Mart’s environmental impact study as well as their traffic and economic impact statements, all of which have been shown to vastly underestimate the negative impact of Wal-Mart’s intrusion into Cortland. These challenges, all prepared by experts, must be considered by the city council prior to considering Wal-Mart’s proposed store in Cortland.
