There is an ongoing battle to try and prevent the building and construction of a new Wal-mart Super-center in Iowa City, Iowa. The proposed site would be located less than one mile up the road from the existing Wal-mart - thus leaving the old premises vacant and abandoned.
Iowa City Stop Wal-mart ("ICSW"), a group of local concerned citizens and community activists, has filed two lawsuits against the city, which the Judge has taken under advisement. Thousand Friends of Iowa, a group concerned with preserving aesthetic and cultural integrity, has joined in the lawsuit.
Concerns about the proposed construction have focused on the process under which the Super-center proposal moved forward. In addition, trial testimony before the Judge focused concerns on the potential negative economic impacts of having a 214,000 square foot mega-retail store on land now owned by the city's airport. A University of Iowa professor characterized Wal-mart as, "Standing out as a leader in the race to the bottom."
