Wal-Mart is attempting for the third time to place an unwanted store in a Lawrence, New Jersey location that would adversely affect the residents of Lawrence, Ewing and Trenton.
Despite Lawrence’s zoning screening committee’s multiple rejections of Wal-Mart’s plans to build a store on Spruce Street near the Trenton Farmer’s Market., Wal-Mart has repeatedly asked for extensions to place their store above the community’s objections. Wal-Mart’s most recent extension expires in March, and L.E.T.s Stop Wal-Mart expects Wal-Mart to ask for yet another extension.
In response to Wal-Mart’s persistent attempts to subjugate the community’s wishes, L.E.T.s Stop Wal-Mart has proposed a living wage ordinance for Lawrence Township, which would require large retailers wishing to open shop in Lawrence to pay a wage of $11.08 per hour with $3.50 per hour spent on employee benefits. The group hopes to persuade the Lawrence Town Council to adopt this measure, but they are also prepared to start a living wage referendum ballot initiative.
