Stoughton Forward is a group of concerned citizens in Stoughton, WI. Comprised of homeowners and leaders from the civic, business, religious, and environmental communities, Stoughton Forward and other groups have held off proposed construction of a Wal-mart Super-center for over 2.5 years in their community. There already exists a Wal-mart in town.
Stoughton Forward aims to revitalize the City of Stoughton and has the following specific goals:
- To improve the Downtown business district of the city;
- To develop Downtown infill projects (residential and commercial units consistent with the character of the present Downtown facades);
- To improve the tax base of the community with responsible residential and commercial growth;
- To protect the city and township residents from ballooning property taxes (due to run away growth and the resulting significant pressure on city services and infrastructure); &
- To promote a livable, walk-able and safe city for youth, families and seniors.
Stoughton Forward has already enjoyed some notable achievements, including successful enactment of a Big Box ordinance. This legislation requires that, prior to construction of any Big Box development, economic, traffic, and environmental studies (paid for by the developer) must be completed and made available to the public.
