Banning 24 Hour Stores That Abut Residential Property (2005)
Topics: Crime & Safety | Zoning Regulations
Proposed for Greenfield, Massachusetts. Requires that any retail establishment, which abuts residentially zoned land, shall not be permitted to be open to the public between the hours of 6 am and 12 am. Allows stores already open for 24-hour operations to conform to this by law within 12 months. The intent of the law is to mitigate the negative impact of overnight stores: “increased automobile and pedestrian activity on the streets, increased forms of criminal behavior, such as robbery and auto vehicle theft, and the resulting increased costs of public safety.”
