A Note from Wal-Mart China’s Senior Director of Public Relations
We received quite an interesting note yesterday in our mailbox. It was from the Director of Public Relations for Wal-Mart China! He wrote in to let us know what he thinks of our website.
Mr. Dong seems upset that we are “spreading misinformation.” After all, it’s unfair to spin stories to make your organization appear in a better light - oh wait, Wal-Mart’s already done that. Like a hundred thousand times. I think they actually hire people to do that professionally. What’s that position called? Director of......Public Elations? Oh - Director of Public Relations! That’s it! So Jonathan Dong is criticizing our organization for spinning news stories, when that is, in fact, his full time job.
Let’s first address Mr. Dong’s cries of sensationalism. The original articles he mentions are here (original version) and here. We’ll let you judge for yourselves.
Secondly, Mr. Dong expressed some concerns about our inability to read Chinese media reports. To which we respond: who says we don’t? The articles on our website didn’t translate themselves; Wal-Mart Watch does our own translations and stands by them. We even keep a Mandarin-language blog, hosted on a Chinese server. Last we checked, the Chinese media wasn’t too keen on Wal-Mart, and as the company has expanded retail operations in the country, opposition has been continually mounting. We’re willing to bet that’s why Wal-Mart China needs a Director of Public Relations in the first place.
Thirdly, Mr. Dong’s request that we “pursue high ethical and moral standards” is simply sad. For a PR director from the world’s largest corporation to ask a small non-profit working on behalf of low-wage employees to behave more ethically seems backwards and backhanded. Perhaps Mr. Dong could direct his criticisms to his own company before trying to reform others.
In conclusion, thank you for your suggestions, Mr. Dong. We’d be happy to stop sensationalizing your company’s news if Wal-Mart does the same and closes up its massive PR spin shop. But more to the point, we think that your company is hardly one to question others’ morals or ethics.

Listen hear Jonathan Dong.
When you write: “We are all professionals and should pursue high moral and ethical standards”, you make me want to throw up.
Look at what your low life Walmart company did to people in Jonquiere Quebec and write the bull shit about ethical standards and high morals. You are as fake as your Walmart is.
Have a good day hypocrite.

Interestingly enough, Wal-Mart Watch did not deny Mr. Dong’s allegations in their post. More childsplay please!
In other news: Unions now refer to themselves as “small non-profit”. An image change?

Wal-Mart Watch already proved and documented their assertions. Jonathon Dong failed to disprove them at all, merely objected without providing any information or basis for his complaint.
In other news: Unions are mandatory for WalMart in China to protect Chinese workers. WalMart’s wage slaves in the United States however are more properly described as ‘non-profit’ entities and disposable nonperson labor commodities by WalMart themselves.

I’ll say if a million times. Don’t waste your time trying to talk to pro Wal-Mart folks. They just want their cheap goods. They don’t care about Wal-Mart employees, suppliers, other customers, or what happens to communities. All they care about is their PERCEIVED SAVINGS. Never mind that Wal-Mart treats their employees like crap, squeezes suppliers, and sucks the life out of a community. When you try to tell them that--THEY DON’T BELIEVE YOU. You can have facts galore, but pro Wal-Mart’ers just won’t believe you.
We have fought off Wal-Mart twice. In Malone and Ticonderoga where they have a Wal-Mart there is no community left. Someone from Malone tried to tell me they have gotten 16 businesses since Wal-Mart came. But when you drive through Malone all you see is an empty business district and TONS OF FAST FOOD JOINTS OUTSIDE THE VILLAGE. Friends of mine who live there year round tell me that MALONE IS DEAD. Hardly anyone I know shops there as there just isn’t much.
And by the way Wal-Mart’s low prices are not always low. Perception is everything. If you go and check out prices you will discover that Wal-Mart is not always lowest. In fact many times there prices are higher--and you can save by shopping around. But as I said PERCEPTION IS EVERYTHING.

Jane: Its part of the social engineering to create a new perception of whats acceptable-the abnormal will ,and is, becoming the “new normal”. Check out Bertrand Russell sometimes. Its also what PR firms are built on-creating illusions to manipulate the masses into altered perceptions. Of course, governments worldwide do it ,also. But I’m sure you already knew that. I posted a special comment to you about a new book by Kunstler on life in upstate New York AFTER the demise of WalMart.( The review is on Alternet and Grist.com-sorry,but I don’t recall which thread here I posted it for you.)

You have some severe angry issues that you need to get help for..you have a lot of hate inside of you…
The world does not evolve around you or
Wal-Mart.......
As a former Wal-Mart associate from 85’-91’
I choose not to shop at any of the chain stores...including Wal-Mart...I choose to support my local business…
I my my clothes and thrift stores or yard sales..
I know first hand of what thet are capable

And, one more thing you need to go back to grammar school....

And, Marsha, my dear, you obviously can’t tell the difference between one of Mr. Vantress’ “classic” posts, and the “few hours later follow-up”, which is carefully-crafted by a doppelganger who has too much spare time on their hands…
Obviously, you’re just the kind of person the “anti zoo crew” was hoping would show-up, here (and bite the bait).
As a former Wal-Mart associate from 85’-91’...I know first hand of what thet are capable of doing…
Wasn’t that during the “Sam’s Dream” era? Even the most die-hard of the “anti” crowd usually doesn’t comment on that time period.
And, one more thing you need to go back to grammar school....
Now, if we’re going to throw stones at Mr. Vantress’ grammatical misgivings, we’ll have to drag old “what’s her name” into the fold, too…

To maintain (or gain) your credibility as an advocacy organization, it is best to stay away from the same sensationalist tactics of the opposition. It’s no excuse to essentially say...."they do it, why can’t we” Being on the side of good, does not mean you lose your ethics.

LLC,
Who says that the anti group is on the side of ‘good’? As for ethics, they have none, as they are quick to call people names, one has even created an imbecile list of the other side!! There is only one advocacy group here, the anti Wal-Mart group, the so-called pro side is just people who don’t want to see a company destroyed and ‘capitalism’ replaced with ‘socialism’!!

You sound like a raving lunatic, RDS. And you wonder why your #2 on the WMW Imbecile List?
...cause any major hiccups*...
The growth of the Anti Wal-Mart Movement coincides with the increase in public relations costs. Granted, it’s not the millions squandered in Germany or South Korea, or the untold payouts in fines/lawsuits, but it adds up.
