A Wal-Mart Tradition: Sweatshop Labor Abuses

The holiday season brings with it lots of traditions, but Wal-Mart has a tradition considerably un-festive: persistent labor abuses at supplier factories. Workers overseas endure brutal conditions for little pay in order to make the Christmas ornaments for sale at Wal-Mart stores. Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota has the unfair practices and called on Wal-Mart to hold its suppliers to a higher standard.

This isn’t the first time Wal-Mart has been accused of sweatshop labor abuses. Year after year human rights groups discover unacceptable labor conditions in Wal-Mart supplier factories, yet the company consistently refuses to address the situation. This not only has a devastating impact on communities overseas, it also endangers the safety of US consumers as well.

Senator Says Wal-Mart Sells Products From Sweatshops [Reuters via New York Times]

A Democratic senator said Wednesday that Christmas tree ornaments sold at Wal-Mart Stores and other major retailers were made in a Chinese sweatshop employing workers as young as 12 and others who work more than 100 hours a week.

“There is virtually no enforcement anywhere on these issues,” Senator Byron L. Dorgan of North Dakota said at a news conference concerning the release of a study on Chinese sweatshops that provide cheap goods for the American market. “Our country needs to insist that our trading partners enforce their own labor laws and respect international labor standards.”

The study was conducted by the National Labor Committee, a human rights organization, and highlighted conditions at the Guangzhou Huanya Gift company, an ornament maker in China that employs 8,000 workers.

It found that some employees had been paid as little as 26 cents an hour, half the legal minimum wage in China, and that employees in the spray paint department had handled potentially dangerous chemicals with little or no protection.

Efforts to reach Guangzhou Huanya for comment were not successful.

Wal-Mart said it had started an investigation immediately after receiving a copy of the report. “Through our rigorous ethical standards program, Wal-Mart aggressively deals with any allegations of improper conditions at our suppliers’ factories,” a company spokesman said.

Mr. Dorgan said the report highlighted a “serious trade problem” that has also been brought to the public’s attention by recalls for millions of Chinese-made toys in recent months.

Alex: I have a copy of that video and it is great. It is about 58-60 minutes and well worth viewing.
Where I live we don’t have a Wal-Mart. They tried in 1993 to get in to a town 15 miles away from me. Well, a citizens group formed IMMEDIATELY to keep them out. Wal-Mart spent 3 years trying to get in but was unsuccessful. During those 3 years a retail building cap was put into place. Wal-Mart challenged the planning boards decision in denying them a permit to build. They lost in court not once-BUT TWICE!  Then they came back and challenged the retail cap--and they lost that fight as well.
Last year they reappeared in my town. Well a citizens group formed IMMEDIATELY here as well. We succeeded in electing 3 people to our town board who were anti-sprawl.  Wal-Mart was looking at land that had to be rezoned in order for them to build. Well, the new board STOPPED THE REZONING PROCESS!!  Our new mayor wants to see an impact study on what a store that size will do to our area. Good for our mayor!!  And we are in the process of putting in a retail building cap.
When Wal-Mart was first in existence people thought they were a great place to shop. Plenty of bargains, etc, etc. But people see this company differently now. Every day a few more people wake up and refuse to shop there anymore. Why? Because word is out on how they treat their employees, how much junk from China they sell, how they treat their suppliers, etc. And now their stock price has stagnated for the past few years.
Last year approximately 47 Wal-Mart’s DIDN’T GET BUILT! Why? Because of citizen opposition. You can say what you want about Wal-Mart’s top people. Sometimes I think they are living in a fairy tale existence thinking a few tv commercials will turn business around for Wal-Mart.  But they had better try other tactics, like paying employees a living wage to start with.
Yes, loads of people still shop there, and they still take in big bucks every day. But every day one or more people are waking up to how bad Wal-Mart is and they refuse to shop there anymore. This company is going to have to go a long way before they change their image in the minds of many Americans. I still stand by my original statement--The honeymoon is over for Wal-Mart.

The honeymoon is over for Wal-Mart.

May I quote you on that? :o)

I often post that Wal-Mart increased sales by $50 billion dollars last year but only increased profits by $50 million. The fact is the Beast is having to run faster and faster just to stay even. If you factor in inflation Wal-Mart really isn’t gaining much ground at all.

“There are a lot of issues here, but what they add up to is the end of the age of Wal-Mart,” contends Richard Hastings, a senior analyst for the retail rating agency Bernard Sands. “The glory days are over.”

Jane, You Summarized How to Beat Wal-Mart Very Well!

Jane, your post summarized the key to beating back Wal-Mart very well.  No village or town council should think about going “toe to toe” with The Beast if it doesn’t have an air-tight size cap on retail development in place.  Also more and more cities and towns that do cave in to Wal-Mart, should DEMAND that Wal-Mart downsize their development and put most, if not all of the parking, underground beneath the store as was done in Monona, Wisconsin.  If Wal-Mart can do this in one place, they can do it in every place.  Think of all the storm run-off water that will be prevented by this type of improved design.  Let Wal-Mart put its money where its “environmentally friendly” voice is.

Number two on the list is to have a strong common council or board that that is led by a strong mayor who won’t let Wal-Mart lead him/her around by the nose.  Your city or town appears to have all of these elements in place.  Congratulations!

But this is not nearly enough.  It’s no big secret that Wal-Mart’s favorite tactic is to pit one town or city against another.  I read an article once about how they plan development over in European countries.  Over there it is done more regionally instead of town by town like it is in America.  There needs to be much better coordination and communication between various small town governing bodies if the fight against Wal-Mart is going to be the most effective.

Had a wondeful opportunity today to discuss Walmart with others today. I heard another person talking about this company because they saw a video about WM. The “Quebec store” was mentioned. What a wonderful opportunity it was to tell a few of them the history of this awful company. Two people stated that they would never shop Walmart. I hope that I planted the seed in the other 2 or 3 people who were listening.
Walmarts millions and millions of dollars of advertising will not stop the peoples determination to expose this company for what it is. A low life, blood sucking corporate bully.

I personally would be happy if there were no Walmart stores in Canada. I don’t think one could make an uglier looking store.  I have heard that some places are forcing WM change their cookie cutter design in favour of something that fits the community surroundings more. (Oh my God! WM’s business model won’t be able to sustain itself and it won’t be able to turn a profit)~joke, joke.  More like the Walton family will have to spend a few hundred thousand dollars more instead of buying another painting.

He couldn’t get a picture of ME, so he had someone take a picture of him, so don’t make fun of him!!  Notice how he gave the directions on how to transform it from a bag to an outfit, that was so you couldmake one for yourself!!  Just make sure that if you find a bag, you wash out the dog crap first or NOT, which ever you choose!!

Screwedby,

“Leave the dog crap in the bag and drop it off at your closest Wal-Mart!”

Why, is that what YOU do, instead of washing your bags out?  Guess when you take mommy shopping and visiting her friends, at Wal-Mart, you just exchange your old used laundry (bags), for some new ones!!  That’s the real reason you take your mommy there, instead of someplace else, Wal-Mart has the best bags for use as clothing, right?

Hey, I generally use other plastic bags from stores like Safeway to pick up my dog’s poop.  But it’s just not the same.  You know, just don’t get the same level of satisfaction as I do when using a Walmart bag to scoop up the excrement from my German Shepherd.
