ACNeilson Looks At “Wal-Mart Moms”… and Everyone Else Who Shops at Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart stockpiles massive amounts of information about its customers. The retailer’s databases are enormous - bigger than the internet - and the information contained on its servers includes everything from which aisles shoppers choose to go down to the time of day chocolate milk sells quickest.

Now, the statistics firm ACNeilson (best known for its TV viewership ratings) is taking Wal-Mart’s data and helping the retailer understand its shoppers even better. At a recent conference of Wal-Mart suppliers, Neilson reps broke down how many cartons of eggs, car parts, and bags of dog food Wal-Mart customers buy each year. The study also revealed the average household incomes of Wal-Mart’s shoppers, the average number of trips each shopper makes and how much shoppers spent at the stores, on average. Ultimately, Wal-Mart hopes to use this information to customize store inventories and increase profits.

The study comes at a time when political analysts everywhere are desperately trying to understand Wal-Mart’s core demographic. “Wal-Mart Moms” may be the key to November’s election, some pundits say. Political alignment might not have been on Neilson’s questionnaire, but the study does provide some insight. According to Neilson, the average Wal-Mart shopper is a “pet-loving, pasta-eating, car-driving, gadget-obsessed dieter who either doesn’t care for cheese or buys it elsewhere.” (That part about the cheese may or may not impact the election directly.)

The data in the study doesn’t provide a complete picture of Wal-Mart’s shoppers - and it certainly doesn’t encompass all of the middle-aged women being wooed by politicians - but Wal-Mart is trying harder than ever to win over “the core female head of household” i.e., the “Wal-Mart Mom.” The retailer isn’t alone in catering to this powerful group not alone, and who knows - maybe quality dog food actually is the secret to winning the presidency in November.

From Wal-Mart Moms to Facebook Independents, GOP Targets Voters ----April 5,2008

SANTA ANA PUEBLO — Remember the soccer moms?
The top campaign official for presumptive Republican nominee John McCain on Friday identified five groups of target voters, a wide-ranging bloc that includes young people, Hispanics and what he called “Wal-Mart moms,’’ “Rehab Republicans’’ and “Facebook independents.’’
Addressing the Republican National Committee’s meeting of state chairmen at posh Tamaya Resort, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said those voters will play a major role in this fall’s general election.
He urged GOP officials to familiarize themselves now.
“Go to Wal-Mart and stand next to the greeter for 20 minutes,’’ he said. “Go see the voters we’re targeting. If you see them, you’ll understand them.’’
Such political and cultural talk rises every four years, when campaigns identify groups that are evenly divided over which presidential candidate to support, as well as the issues those people view as most important.
This year, Davis said it’s not just McCain’s White House bid that stands to benefit from securing support from targeted groups, but also GOP candidates for federal offices and state legislative seats further down the ticket.
Davis listed the targeted voters in this order:
_ Wal-Mart moms. The description sounds like an updated version of soccer moms, battling a sluggish economy. “They shop at Wal-Mart,’’ Davis said. “They don’t have expensive tastes. They are suburban by nature.’’
_ Rehab Republicans. Longtime GOP members “who are not so enthusiastic over the last few years,’’ Davis said. “We’ve got to get them back.’’
_ Youth. Davis acknowledged the energy and enthusiasm Democratic candidate Barack Obama is drawing at rallies attracting thousands of young voters.
“We’ve got to go after this segment,’’ he said, suggesting outreach and education efforts through improvements to campaign Web sites.
“Obama’s site looks like a Calvin Klein commercial, very hip,’’ Davis said, adding that McCain’s site, while quite productive for campaign fundraising efforts, “is like a Buster Brown commercial.’’
_ Facebook independents. Tech-savvy, social networkers who are fiscally and socially conservative. “A critical, growing group,’’ he said. “They spend a lot of time on the Internet. When they pick a candidate, they tend to become activists.’’
_ Hispanics. “This group is critical to our party, not just in the Southwest or Florida but the whole nation,’’ Davis said.
Spanish-language versions of McCain television advertisements will air in key markets, Davis said. “We’re putting our money behind this effort. We’re putting our time behind this effort,’’ he said.~~~ (VIA Wake Up Walmart)~~~~~~~~~~~~~Note:..."This year, Davis said it’s not just McCain’s White House bid that stands to benefit from securing support from targeted groups, but also GOP candidates for federal offices and state legislative seats further down the ticket. “----------------------LETS MAKE SURE THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN AGAIN!!!VOTE OUT THE BUMS!!!!!

Hey Be Nice to Larry Everyone...

He’s just feeling a little confused and disillusioned right now.  Do you blame him?  He’s given some good years of his life fighting for and defending the flag of this country.

It’s beginning to dawn on him that the country he served and “fought” for, doesn’t exist.  It’s all meaningless and hollow political propaganda and rhetoric.  He feels betrayed and duped by the “leadership” we’ve had in Washington for at least the last 8 years and possibly longer....who can blame him?

Now in the sunset years of his old, crusty, bitter, and disillusioned life, he’s lashing out at anything and anyone he feels threatened by.  He’s looking for a distraction and some relief from the boredom in his monotonous daily existence.

Easy does it Larry!  Your commentary lately, is beginning to make some of the vomit RDS has posted, look pretty good in comparison.

BTW,
What’s the deal with McCain getting all panic stricken by the bailout? He’s stopped his campaign and is refusing to debate Obama unless they pass the bailout package… If he completely loses it, does that mean that Sarah Palin will become the republican candidate? A simmilar thing happened in NYC after 9/11. We were in the middle of elections, in fact 9/11 was Democratic primary day. It that instance, of course the primary was postponed. It was interesting to see the expressions on all of the Candidates faces, when they realized what they were getting into. Blumberg, whom I did not vote for, was the only candidate that still looked like they REALLY wanted the Job. He won and life went on. All in all I would give him a B as a mayor. Small Businesses really suffered and all the aid money went to the companies that needed it the least. As of last year 69% of NY City’s ecconomy and tax base was derived from the banking industry. As you can imagine, this banking meltdown is really screwing with the local economy. But this is what happens when a community, or a state or a country, puts all of its eggs in one basket. And is just one more reason that every community in America and arround the World needs to resist Wal*Mart. There may be some pretty good arguments supporting an industry that pay’s the way the Banking industry does. So if Mayor Blumberg let things tip a little to far in one direction, that’s understadable but not forgiveable! I’m participating in several groups who have suddenly sprung up out of nowhere, looking to support local small businesses. After watching Bill Clintor on the Daily Show last night (I never voted for him once) I realized how refreshing it was to have a leader who could actually lead. Now I know his wife worked on Wal*Marts board and all, but he made the big point. Support Small Businesses!! Let the Bailout happen, but invest the money in Americas future. Well Mr McCain wants to stop the election… he doesn’t know what to do! Or, his big corporate republican buddies are just trying to rush the bailout through so that, like the War in Iraq, the get as much of that pie as possible. I really hope that the debate goes on as planned. McCain is showing himself to be a major woosie if he cancels.

Larry,

Don’t you know the values you cherish are from days gone by, today, it’s “political correctness”, so you have to deal with ‘perception’, rather than ‘reality’!!  Never mind that the country has done a 180 and what used to be UP, is now DOWN and visa versa!!  Values, like marriage, virtue, pride, facts and ‘personal responsibility’ are out the window and have been replaced by ‘do what you FEEL at the moment’!!  What used to be self respect and ‘ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country’ (JFK), has been replaced by ‘ask what your country can do for YOU’!!  Today’s men, are portrayed on TV, as either total idiots, who need to be taken care of by thier very intelligent wives, or macho drug using dudes, who are ready to kick you butt at a moments notice!!  Where are the fathers we used to know, who go to work every day and support their families?  Mostly, we see today, “Dead Beat” dads and the women who feel they don’t need men, but are running to the open arms of the government for that support!!  So, no matter what you say, the new generation won’t listen, because to them, you are spouting wacko outdated concepts based on pre-60’s value systems!!

Alex,

“Where is RDS(Bob) lately. He hardly posts anymore. It would seem to me that he is losing his fight within him.”

It is not a loss of fight, it is more frustration of dealing with people who don’t want to debate issues, but would rather call people names, twist the truth and come back with, ‘If it doesn’t fit my view, I don’t want to hear it’ or stick their fingers in their ears and humm out NaNaNaNa!!  It’s the same reason I don’t want to debate things with my grandchildren, when all they do is repeat things they heard at school from their liberal teachers!!  It’s like hearing that Obama is a ‘god’ and McCain & Bush are ‘totally evil’!!  And, when you bring up things that the Dems did that caused problems, you are called a liar, even though the facts are out there ‘plain and clear’ and you are told, “It’s all Bush’s fault”, just like “It’s all Wal-Mart’s fault”!!  In other words, it’s like seeing a child, with chocolate all over their face and asking, “Who ate the candy?” and hearing “It wasn’t me, it was Tommy” and then being told, that kids NEVER lie!!

ddrb,

“My husband says the GOP actually means Gay Old Party drom how many Repubes are involved in” toe tapping” scandals.”

Then in the middle of the taping Dave got word that McCain was, in fact just down the street being interviewed by Katie Couric. Dave even cut over to the live video of the interview, and said, “Hey Senator, can I give you a ride home?”

Earlier in the show, Dave kept saying, “You don’t suspend your campaign. This doesn’t smell right. This isn’t the way a tested hero behaves.” And he joked: “I think someone’s putting something in his metamucil.”

“He can’t run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sara Palin. Where is she?”

“What are you going to do if you’re elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We’ve got a guy like that now!”

Why is a U.S. Army brigade being assigned to the “Homeland”

Several bloggers today have pointed to this obviously disturbing article from Army Times, which announces that “beginning Oct. 1 for 12 months, the [1st Brigade Combat Team of the 3rd Infantry Division] will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North”—“the first time an active unit has been given a dedicated assignment to NorthCom, a joint command established in 2002 to provide command and control for federal homeland defense efforts and coordinate defense support of civil authorities.” The article details:

They may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control or to deal with potentially horrific scenarios such as massive poisoning and chaos in response to a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-yield explosive, or CBRNE, attack. . . .

The 1st BCT’s soldiers also will learn how to use “the first ever nonlethal package that the Army has fielded,” 1st BCT commander Col. Roger Cloutier said, referring to crowd and traffic control equipment and nonlethal weapons designed to subdue unruly or dangerous individuals without killing them.

“It’s a new modular package of nonlethal capabilities that they’re fielding. They’ve been using pieces of it in Iraq, but this is the first time that these modules were consolidated and this package fielded, and because of this mission we’re undertaking we were the first to get it.”

The package includes equipment to stand up a hasty road block; spike strips for slowing, stopping or controlling traffic; shields and batons; and, beanbag bullets.
.

The brigade will not change its name, but the force will be known for the next year as a CBRNE Consequence Management Response Force, or CCMRF (pronounced “sea-smurf").

For more than 100 years—since the end of the Civil War—deployment of the U.S. military inside the U.S. has been prohibited under The Posse Comitatus Act (the only exceptions being that the National Guard and Coast Guard are exempted, and use of the military on an emergency ad hoc basis is permitted, such as what happened after Hurricane Katrina). And as the Army Times notes, once this particular brigade completes its one-year assignment, “expectations are that another, as yet unnamed, active-duty brigade will take over and that the mission will be a permanent one."~~ ~~(Glen Greenwald,Salon.com-9/24/08)~~~~~~~~~~NOTE: Why indeed? To protect unsuspecting American male citizens from wily, unscrupulous “American women”?LOL!!

ddrb,

“But you can take up with ME the issue of your agreement with Larry that American women are no longer worth having. I don’t recall that ever being “American values”.”

I don’t think that I am just agreeing with Larry, I think the fact, that 2 out of 3 marriages end in divorce and more and more couples choose to just ‘live together’, until they decide they have had enough, rather than marry, proves the point!!  Sorry, but being ‘married’, was once an American Value, as was men being men and women being women!!  And, the fact that men are opting out of and not getting into marriage, must be the result of SOMETHING!!  The ‘Single parent’ of the past, usually meant that one of the parents had died!!  In fact, most people WAITED until they were married, to have children and then worked together to raise those children responsibly!!  Therefore, children behaved better and did not ‘shoot’ up schools or join gangs that robbed and killed people!!

Like Larry said, the American femminist woman today, is often confused as to what she really is, a woman or a man!!  And, the big problem is, their kids are being raised ‘confused’ as well!!

What’s really funny, is when someone asks how long you’ve been married and you say a number over 5 years, they respond, “Really, that long, how did you manage that?”!!  I’ve got a sister-in-law, that has been married 6 times, what do you think, she picked 6 losers or it’s HER?  And, even if she did pick 6 losers, it’s still HER, for not having much sense!!

Speaking of WalMart moms, here’s an interesting excerpt :~~~~~~~~~~Wall Street Takes Welfare It Begrudges to Ordinary Americans

By Mimi Abramovitz, Women’s eNews. Posted September 25, 2008.

Why is it that the rich and reckless accept “welfare” for themselves while rejecting it for those who need it most, particularly woman.

Today we sit and watch as the high-rolling gamblers and critics of “big government” take welfare. These are many of the same people who thought it was just fine to deprive millions of women of critical resources and let them fend for themselves.

Even before the catastrophic news out of Wall Street in recent days, women have been worried about their economic security.

Last March a Gallup poll found that in the past two years more women than men said that they worry about the economy (64 percent versus 57 percent). The same holds for health care, crime, the environment, drug use, unemployment, hunger and homelessness.

More men are employed by Wall Street and more men have money invested there. That means the male anxiety meter is probably much higher now that they risk losing their jobs, pensions, portfolios and homes. But women’s worries have probably shot up even more.

Women are likely to lead in the economic-anxiety gap because distressing economic events fall harder on people with less. “I don’t play the stock market, but it does affect us. It affects me personally. It affects the little guy,” a female dispatch supervisor of a limo company that serves investment bank employees recently told the New York Times.

The same holds for all the secretaries and housekeepers who keep investment houses clean and running.

Decades of Lost Ground

But what makes the bailout of the fat tomcats so galling is that women at the bottom of the economic ladder have lost ground during the last 30 years, with very few seeming to notice or care.

From F.D.R.’s New Deal in the 1930s to L.B.J.’s Great Society in the 1970s, the expansion of government programs for the middle class and the poor—Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, public assistance, as well as health and social services—provided a modest economic backup for women who predominate among recipients.

Great Depression leaders who saw government as the solution to that economic crisis bailed out banks in exchange for tighter regulations to curb speculation. But they also created cash-assistance programs that increased women’s purchasing power and protected them against economic hardship.

Those programs redistributed income downward and expanded the capacity of the federal government to kick-start the economy while cushioning consumers and workers from the vagaries of the market.

Benefits Didn’t Trickle Down

Advocates of “less government” promised that benefits would “trickle down” to the rest of us. Instead their laissez-faire strategy weakened government benefits, one of the three interlocking pillars of economic support counted on by thousands of women from all walks of life.

ddrb in
Thursday, September 25 at 11:55 AM

The Congressional Budget Office recently reported that government spending for domestic discretionary programs fell from a high of 4.8 percent of national output, or gross domestic product, in 1978 to 3.4 percent in 2007. That equals billions of dollars in cuts. Except for rising health care costs, spending on entitlement programs—such as Social Security, unemployment insurance and public assistance—also fell from 8.5 percent of the gross domestic product in 1983 to 7 percent in 2007.

During the past eight years, war spending zoomed ahead, bringing us to the present spectacle, where we see U.S. military spending exceeding that of the rest of the world combined.

Meanwhile, Bush tax policies diverted dollars from public services and boosted corporate profits to a record high of almost 14 percent of national income while the share going to wages dropped to its lowest level since 1929. Combined with relaxed government oversight and rampant speculation the way was paved for abusive mortgage practices that turned Wall Street into one big profit bubble waiting to pop.

With these excesses as a backdrop, women saw their other two pillars of economic security weaken as well: marriage to a wage-earner and paid employment.

Falling marriage rates combined with three decades of sagging male breadwinner wages have undercut the capacity of matrimony to provide women with the financial security it once offered.

Wobbling Wages and Work

From 1979 to 2006, the real value of the median weekly wage of men 25 years and older fell steadily to $797 from $807.

The massive entry of women into the work force since World War II—one of the most significant social trends in modern U.S. history—gave them a third pillar of support. But this too is now wobbling.

As male wages stagnated many women went to work—not as a matter of choice, as headlines about women opting in and out might suggest—but just to make ends meet. Between 1970 and 2005 the proportion of married couples with two earners jumped to 62 percent from about 46 percent, Labor Department data show. The U.S Women’s Bureau finds wives’ contribution to family income rose to 35 percent from 26 percent.

But many of today’s 68 million wage-earning women have recently suffered more job losses than men and a larger drop in wages than the general population, according to the Women’s Bureau. In 2006 full-time female workers earned an average of $627 week or about $32,000 a year.

While we watch the spectacle of the government channeling untold billions of taxpayer dollars into failing Wall Street giants the three pillars of economic support for women—the safety net, marriage and wages—continue to crumble.

The public bailout of corporate America may be necessary given the risks of a collapse to the global economy. But why is it that the rich and reckless accept “welfare” for themselves while steadfastly rejecting the same for women in need? It’s time to take a billion here and there to assist the women raising families on too little income to keep a roof over their heads.

Is this the result of all the chemicals China is dumping in it’s rivers? As I’ve mentioned before don’t consume anything bought at Wal*Mart, Toys or Food.

But many of today’s 68 million wage-earning women have recently suffered more job losses than men and a larger drop in wages than the general population, according to the Women’s Bureau. In 2006 full-time female workers earned an average of $627 week or about $32,000 a year.~~NOTE: I wonder how many of those female"full timers” work at WalMart?

How often have we heard the expression” Is it something they’re putting in the water?"Actually,it may be something thats being put in the food, according to recent research. . To wit:~~~"Teen finds MSG slows brain cell growth”
Published on 18-08-2008

Source: Canada.com

CALGARY - A Calgary researcher is getting ready to publish a groundbreaking study that links a popular food additive to reduced growth in the brain cells of snails—work that could have major implications for children’s health.

Not bad for a teenager.

Michelle Ah-Seng is a 17-year-old high school student from Cochrane, just west of Calgary. She’s also the lead researcher on a University of Calgary study that offers the first solid proof that high concentrations of MSG, an additive used to boost flavour in everything from fast food to canned soups, can stunt the growth of brain cells.

“It has been shown that (in a pregnant woman), MSG will cross through the placenta and can affect the fetus,” said Ah-Seng.

“Fetuses are still developing, and their brain cells are starting to grow and starting to reach out to each other. If MSG has been inhibiting or stunting the growth, then the cells basically won’t reach out to one another.”

Ah-Seng is one of 22 Grade 11 students spending six weeks of their summer vacation in labs and clinics at the University of Calgary as part of the 2008 Heritage Youth Researcher Summer Program, funded by the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research.

Her project involved directly dosing brain cells culled from snails with a concentration of monosodium glutamate equal to what might commonly be found in human blood or cerebral spinal fluid after eating a meal containing the additive, such as a bag of chips. Not only did the MSG inhibit growth of the snail’s brain cells, it also limited communication between them. The implications for human health aren’t hard to infer.

“There’s no difference between a snail brain cell and a rat or a human brain cell, only that there are fewer of them and (they’re) larger,” said Naweed Syed, Ah-Seng’s supervisor and a neuroscientist with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Calgary’s faculty of medicine.

“This is the first unequivocal evidence, to my knowledge, that MSG has direct effect on neuronal ability. I think it’s very exciting.”

Ah-Seng points to previous studies that have examined the link between MSG exposure on rat fetuses and increased obesity and learning disabilities after birth, as well as links to neurogenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and ALS.

“It’s very important, especially for pregnant women or people getting into their elder ages, to be aware of how much MSG (you’re) consuming,” she said.

The next step, said Syed, is to get the results published in a scientific journal. Ah-Seng plans to continue her work during evenings and weekends in her last year of high school to validate the findings.

“The stuff she has done (in six weeks), I would call it equivalent to a master’s degree,” said Syed. “The only thing I hope is that I never have to compete with this young mind. It’s absolutely incredible.”

Ah-Seng said she plans to curtail her MSG consumption as much as possible. “I’m sure to be more aware of how I consume different sorts of foods, because it’s everywhere,” she said. “You have to check the ingredients label. It’s very important to be aware of how things will affect your health."~~~~~~~Note,Along with bovine hormones in milk, biosphenols in baby bottles, now MSG slowing brain cell receptors, mothers, especially, need to pay close attention. BTW, this MSG issue is not a “WalMart thing”,per se,but it IS used in food processing to “enhance flavor in a variety of meats, poultry and most processed foodstuffs.(Isn’t it ironic that the teenage researcher is Canadian, and not American)

Walmart shoppers are not all one set group of people, we are all individuals on this earth people.
Some of the comments here are so strange, makes you wonder what kind of igmos are out there campaigning against walmart.
We look for bargains and try to support our family. Many of us are not rich and barely get by. So we HAVE to bargain shop. I go where I can get the best deal and save money on gas, it’s our economy and it’s reality.
This gas can story was the final straw with walmartwatch.com Before I was a supporter but no longer so. As a parent, it is our obligation to teach children fire and gas cans don’t mix. If my kid blows up my garage by lighting fire near a gas can, I’m not going to go out and sue the gas can manufacturer or where I bought the can.
I’m going to look at myself.
This is getting nuts with people going around with lawsuits and making money off their own negligence.
Has nothing to do with politics either, who cares your political preference? This is the United States of America people, we can CHOOSE what we want to be, it’s our choice.
On these blogs I see fingerpointing and political stabs and I realize how ignorant society is sometimes.
Some of you need to get off your high horse, get a job if you are able, go to work or get a hobby, anything but nitpicking and namecalling, lawsuit supporting and just pure ignorance. An idle mind is subject to evil and this is a perfect example of a site that is full of it, literally.
Go make it a good day and get off your soap opera, life is too short, do something productive! :)

“As a Canadian, I don’t expect you to understand certain issues we Americans are currently facing, but have you considered that maybe, just maybe we have better things to do that to constantly rag on a store (who may actually be helping some people, out there)?”

Americans are currently facing.....what bbrd?
Loss of American jobs to China
Lower and lower service job wages while the fat pigs at the top want more and more?
Decline in quality of goods purchased?
Loss of pride when nothing says “made in (the country you grew up in)?
Loss of economic super status?

Am I a Wal-Mart Woman?

Soccer moms were a solidly middle-class kind of suburban wife (now leaning toward Obama), while a GOP pollster coined the term “Wal-Mart Women” during the primaries to describe the cohort Hillary Clinton was doing so well with. These are women who tend to be less educated and more likely to work hourly wage jobs than those elitist, now-liberal Soccer Moms, who presumably shop at Target.

According to one survey, 41 percent of frequent Wal-Mart shoppers said they made below $35,000 a year, and 39 percent have a high school diploma or less.

OK, if you are a ‘Wal-Mart Woman’, here’s some of the fun you can look forward to at your local store.

I’m telling ya’ll keep yer eye on the ball… If they are telling you to look at one thing, you better be looking someplace else… This bank meltdown is going to play out. I was in play two years ago. Call it “Trickle Down Information”. Don’t wait for the election to find out if your still registered to vote. Call your local papers and news organizations and tell them to watch out for voter fraud. I, for one am getting really tired of people complaining about stuff after it happens.
