Activists Slam Wal-Mart’s PR firm for Greenwashing

Climate activists protested yesterday outside the global headquarters of Wal-Mart’s public relations firm Edelman, slamming the PR agency for greenwashing the environmental policies of companies like Wal-Mart.

Holding a banner that read “EDELMAN PR: SPINNING THE CLIMATE OUT OF CONTROL,” the activists climbed on the roof of Edelman’s headquarters to draw attention not only to the environmentally-damaging practices of companies like Wal-Mart, but to also put an end to the PR firm’s deliberately misleading greenwashing campaigns.

One protester was quoted at the scene saying, “We are here to reclaim the PR machine for normal people who want to see real action on climate change, not another dose of corporate greenwash.” Wal-Mart has been adhering to this philosophy for years, consistently choosing press conferences and TV commericals over actual action or changes to the company’s business model.

Help reclaim the PR machine: spread the word about this protest and Wal-Mart’s history of environmental inaction by linking to this post on your MySpace page, Facebook profile, personal blog or by sending it to your friends and family. Wal-Mart has gotten away with greenwashing for too long, and it’s time activists everywhere demand real action - not words - from the world’s largest corporation.

As usual, Wal Mart is trying to get something for nothing.  They need to be exposed for the deceptive, greed-driven, anti-environmental company they are!

Walmart sucks!  I never shop there.  Walmart is destroying this country from the inside out.  Slave labor.  Poor treatment of employees.  TAKING OUT LIFE INSURANCE POLICIES ON THEIR ELDERLY EMPLOYEES AND CASHING IN WHEN THEY KICK THE BUCKET!!!!!!  Walmart sucks!  If you shop there, you are part of the problem!!!!!  Be a part of the solution....
BOYCOTT WALMART!!!!!

Walmart does not only bear the blame for denying its employees Medical Care, block its staff from having trade unions, increase pollution, drive local businesses out of work,
accept toxic toys and food from China, but through its purchases from China, helps to build up that nation’s military
might and avoids any pressure on China to stop its support of Sudanese genocide.

The spending of millions on propaganda to glorify itself will wear very thin when anyone considers these less than glorious attributes.

Sincerely,

WHOA!! This is just too rich, folks. Bill Clinton attended Oxford University . WalMart has given a million dollars to Bill for his Foundation, which includes the Clinton Climate Initiative.  Edelman is spinning and spending more lobby $$$$ than ever on DC lobbyists for WalMart. Suggestion: Next time, look for the biggest helium balloon you can find, paint it green, christen it the “Hot Air Express”.(That should get a lot of footage). Store carefully. It will come in quite handy during this fall’s Presidential campaign ,when the political rhetoric l rises to unacceptable and predictable levels of methane.

Wal-Mart should become a classic case study for all business schools for the worst ethical practices and greed ever demonstrated by a business despite all the human and societal costs - their motto is “Profit above all else!”

Boycotting Wal Mart is a good way to begin to show Wal Mart that you do not endorse their corrupt way of doing business.
The Walton family is worth Billions and they owe Billions in back taxes.  Yet they pay their employees sub-standard wages and do not pay them enough to afford decent Health Care for them and their families.
Wal Mart is a terrible Corporate neighbor and yet they would have you believe they are a model Citizen.
Don’t believe Wal Marts rhetoric.  Don’t shop at Wal Mart.
There is a high cost of low prices.

Even as bad as Wal-mart is, they should be able to understand that there are only two sides in this.
1)You’re trying your best to be green -or-
2)You’re trying your best to pretend to be green
It’s kinda-sorta like being pregers; either you is or you’re not, no inbetweens.

We NEVER shop at WalMart for the same reasons I saw posted...poor treatment of employees, supporting China and not the US, “pretend” Green policies.  I WAS surprised to hear that the Walton family owes a lot in back taxes.  Why isn’t the IRS garnishing their enormous wages/profits?  As one person said, they would have you believe they are a model citizen by their “feel-good” commercials but they are wolves in sheep’s clothing and we need to expose them!

I can understand you are a proponent of the idea that size doesn’t matter, bb, but if you add “KMart and Target” together, throw in Sears and J.C. Penney for good measure, the combination is only a tiny fraction of Wal-Mart.

At the risk of undermining your manhood, bb, I have to tell you when it comes to negative social effects, size does matter!

Walmart needs to make several changes. As stated above Walmart does not only bear the blame for denying its employees Medical Care, block its staff from having trade unions, increase pollution, drive local businesses out of work,
accept toxic toys and food from China, but through its purchases from China, helps to build up that nation’s military
might and avoids any pressure on China to stop its support of Sudanese genocide.

Walmart is getting slammed all around, and coming from a business school perspective, it make sense.  They need a total about face.  How can such a huge company importing and exporting on such a grand scale honestly keep it’s prices so low.  The people in the U.S. are stuck, we say things like, I know Walmart has such a bad reputation, but I can’t afford to shop anywhere else.  Stop ugly corporate expansion, the franchise has evidently gone crazy, we really need a living wage.

Julia,

“we really need a living wage.”

From a business perspective, how would a ‘living wage’ work, when the ‘cost of living’, varies from area to area and from family to family?  Everybody talks about it, but, I have still to hear how it would be implemented!!

Saturday, July 19 at 12:58 AM

This is only because you think like a selfish ‘love of money’ psychopath RDS. IT (LIVING WAGE PAY IN RETAIL) IS ALREADY IMPLEMENTED ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES IN RETAIL AT COSTCO. But the best from you at WalMart is to lie. The Costco business model makes good money, their stockholders are making better money than by owning WalMart stock over the past 5 years. Costco covers 90-92% of their employees health care cost.

COSTCO IS THE 4TH LARGEST RETAILER IN THE UNITED STATES AND THE 7TH LARGEST IN THE WORLD. (FORBES)

All you can do RDS is evade reality and wallow in ignorance about business models that don’t have the ideology and propaganda of extremist greed and social irresponsibility.

WALMART- The Walton family multi-billionaires need propagandist fools like RDS to perpetuate the evils of theft from labor, dumping employees onto state health care programs, evade paying their taxes and criminally interfering with the rights of the American people to unionize while sucking down billions in public subsidies and claiming to be ‘free market capitalism’.

SDV,

“IT (LIVING WAGE PAY IN RETAIL) IS ALREADY IMPLEMENTED ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES IN RETAIL AT COSTCO.”

So, are you saying that $17.00 an hour, is the ‘living wage’?  Does EVERYBODY at Costco make $17.00 an hour, or do ‘new hires’ make less than that?  What is Costco’s starting wage?  Are those ‘new’ people making a ‘living wage’?  Is the ‘living wage’ the same in San Diego, Omaha, Peoria, Memphis, New York City, Atlanta and Huntsville?  Why doesn’t the government just make the ‘minimum wage’, the ‘living wage’?

RDS in

I don’t think the “living wage” in Peoria and NYC is quite the same thing.

Bill in Peoria
Monday, July 21 at 10:01 PM

I made up ‘Bill in Peoria’ to degrade the living wage effect of paying wages far above the poverty wage that Walmart pays. Walmart can’t tolerate living wage competition or the publicity that surrounds their greed. Walmart needs poverty, not living wages.

Funny, but, still, nobody has explained how a ‘living wage’ would WORK in the real world!!  I guess, just saying the words ‘Living Wage” is good enough of an explanation, kind of like ‘Abbra-Kadabbra’ or ‘Sheezam’, “now we have a ‘one size fits all’ wage”!!

RDS explaining again his willful ignorance.

You have earned the Helen Keller quote again for yourself RDS (aka Bob aka imbecile #1!)-

“People do not like to think. If one thinks, one must reach conclusions. Conclusions are not always pleasant.”
Helen Keller

Costco and other at least ‘living wage’ employers do not need an explanation for what they do in retail. WalMart however needs excuses and extensive propaganda for impoverishing their own ‘associates’.

“Everything has its limit - iron ore cannot be educated into gold.”
Mark Twain

WalMart- Lies in the Zeitgeist will save us. Costco must not be allowed to continue to embarrass our business model exploitation of people/labor. The Walton family multi-billionaires have the stink of economic fascism on the money WalMart stole from workers, call in the Edelman aroma therapy crew to build anew a reputation apart from any sense of social justice. And hurry!

Here’s an idea > How’s about some new provisions in anti-trust law that limits the number of employees that ONE corporation can have on public assisstance? That could form the basis for paring down the size of companies
