Andy Stern on Meet the Bloggers

Andy Stern, head of the SEIU, speaking about the Employee Free Choice Act on Meet the Bloggers. On what the EFCA is, and why it would benefit workers:

If we understand what’s happening in America today, the gap between the rich and everyone else is growing pretty wide and pretty fast, which leads to all those foreclosures and other debt problems you talked about. One of the ways American workers used to get a raise was they had a union. And they way they got a union was they could make their own choice about whether they wanted to have an organization to talk to their employer about their wages and their heath care. And over the last 50 years what we’ve seen, is the courts and the corporations begin to eat away at those rights. So the Employee Free Choice Act just modernizes the national labor relations laws of our country, that again allow workers to make their own choice about whether they have a union, and tell the employer “We’ll see you after we have a majority of people who want to talk with you at the collective bargaining table, and until then this is our decision not your decision.

OK.  So H.R. 800, the Employee Free Choice Act is simply to eliminate the secret ballot in union recognition elections.  How does this help employees???

What this does is it enable everyone to see who is voting against forming a union (I know it sounds crazy to many of you WMW followers but there are people who do not want to be in a union).  This is a bully tactic to benefit unionions.

In 2001 16 democrats sent a letter to Mexico stressing the importance of the secret ballot.  Now, 11 of these 16 (who are still in the House of Representatives) are supporting the elimination of the secret ballot.  This is democrats throwing a bone to the unions that have supported them with union dues all these years.

Even if you are pro union, do you find fault in protecting the secret ballot.  Who benefits from an open election?

Big Tex,

“What this does is it enable everyone to see who is voting against forming a union”

And, what most people don’t think of, is, it also lets EVERYONE know who is FOR forming a union, unlike the ‘secret ballot’!!  No one knows how you ‘vote’ in secret, but everyone knows when you ‘sign a card’!!
