Another Sound Investment Decision by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
Everyone who sees the video is shocked: Wal-Mart managers dressed in drag, parading around official Wal-Mart corporate meetings. Bloggers have been weighing in on the never-before-seen footage, and while many note how offensive Wal-Mart’s mockery is (particularly in light of the landmark Dukes v. Wal-Mart gender discrimination case) many go on to add that the real problem here is how Wal-Mart treats its vendors. Had Wal-Mart bought the rights to this footage in the first place, it wouldn’t have yet another public relations debacle on its hands. May this be a lesson, that women working at and vendors working with Wal-Mart all learn from.
Flagler Productions, a video production company in Kansas that spent years as Wal-Mart’s corporate archivist, is now selling access to thousands of hours of candid footage of Wal-Mart execs talking about the business’s dirty secrets.

Ouch! Wal-Mart forgot to sign a contract spelling out the terms of their production services. I’ve leave it up to the legal eagles on this board to offer a more informed opinion, but this can’t be good.....for Wal-Mart.

As many of you may know, Wal-Mart was involved in the largest gender discrimination class-action lawsuit in this decade for alleged discrimination towards female employees in management ranks.
From Jezebel:
Wal-Mart has famously good lawyers, which makes it tough to get money out of them, for your incapacitating injury or class-action sex discrimination suit. So it’s a good thing they’re so stingy!
They were mean and now they suffer. Which is how life should be, for Wal-Mart. Below, one of the finest examples of repurposing footage from the archives: a 1995 meeting featuring a bunch of company managers on stage in drag.
Did Wal-Mart Forget the Little Guys? [Wall Street Journal Independent Street Blog]
The biggest players in the world can’t function without smaller ones to keep them supplied, technologically-sound, and otherwise ticking. To stay afloat, Flagler offered to sell Wal-Mart the whole video archive for several million dollars. Wal-Mart, whose revenue is now over $375 billion, countered with an offer of $500,000.
And the little guy hasn’t forgotten.

Other revealing moments include: “A former executive vice president and board member challenges store managers in 2004 to continue his work opposing unionization. Male managers in drag lead thousands of co-workers in the company’s corporate cheer. In another meeting, managers mock foolish or dangerous use of a product sold in its stores. In 1991, founder Sam Walton describes Hillary Clinton, then a Wal-Mart director, as “one of us.”

I’m still trying to see how men dressing up like women, equates to sex discrimination!! Or, how someone making a ‘joke’ about ‘an idiot’ pouring gas on a fire, equates to product liability!! When shows like “America’s Funniest Videos” shows people doing ‘stupid things’, does that imply that the product they are using stupidly, is ‘faulty’?

"When shows like “America’s Funniest Videos” shows...”
Here we go again! RDS just can’t make a point without interjecting some “nuggest of wisdom” he gleaned by watching some insipid television program.
“When shows like “America’s Funniest Videos” shows people doing ‘stupid things’, does that imply that the product they are using stupidly, is ‘faulty’?”
No, it implies that the people who watch such TV shows are stupid! Who needs TV when we have you to entertain us, RDS?

A Trucker,
I have found, that when talking to SOME people on here, you have to draw them a mental picture, to get them to understand!! Now, I can see that you are one of the ones that can’t even ‘get it’ with a mental picture!!
“No, it implies that the people who watch such TV shows are stupid!”
And, how would you know what that show is like and the mental state of those who watch it? Unless you’ve watched it yourself!!

RDS: Does that qualify me as less than stupid-?I never have watched the above mentioned TV shows! (I suppose stupididity is in the eye or ear or speech of the beholder----to willingly remember( or forget) to hear, see, speak no evil-especially as it relates to WalMart--MOST particularly if you have a vested(financial ) interest in WalMart.

So now that Walmart has let the Shanks keep the money that they owed Walmart, is this going to be the next story that we have to see 2 or 3 times a day?

ddrb,
My point was not about a TV show, it’s just that some people can’t see beyond what they choose to see!! The point was about how some people use products for something that they were not intended for, get hurt and then try to sue for their injuries!!
“Does that qualify me as less than stupid”
Do you pour gas on a fire or spill ‘hot’ coffee in your lap? Have you even heard of this show? If you have, you probably have heard that it shows people doing ‘stupid stuff’ and that’s WHY you don’t watch it!!

You might be on to something, JOE.
Referencing the Wal-Mart/gas can thing, I am sure more than a few of us have seen that kind of silliness floating-around the office e-mail…

A Trucker,
“Remind us all why the readers of this blog shouldn’t view YOU this way?”
Because I deal in the world or reality, not Dreams and Wishes!! Plus, I usually back up some of my posts with examples!!
What have you ever said, that you can ‘back up’ with FACTS?
RDS in

RDS: Didn’t one of those truckers “back up” with facts the issue of gasoline-specifically,the color additive that designates its use? You were sure wrong on that one. Like 40 years ago wrong.

So, things can change in 40 years and people who are no longer in the industry didn’t see the change, sue me for not knowing that!!
A Trucker,
So, you knew that dye thing, what else have you provided? Oh yeah, “People are stupid”!! And, the dye thing didn’t even have anything to do with Wal-Mart!! And, of course, you agree with ddrb, that truckers don’t pay any taxes in the states they drive unless they go on a toll road, right?

At least I use my thoughts to describe what I have learned over the years and do not just ‘cut and paste’ everything, without thought, like you do!!

RDS: Wrong again- I posted my thoughts and opinions here for at least seven or eight months BEFORE I learned to cut and paste, recently. I did not hear similar criticisms from you about Nick’s habit of cutting and pasting-he was the King of cut and paste.

WRONG, SDV was the King of ‘cut and paste’!!
Dave,
Sometimes it takes some people 7 to 8 months to learn something!! Try to remember, ‘cut and paste’ is VERY complicated!!

Repeating a line that you have heard that has the same word that someone used in the previous post doesn’t neccessarily create a good comeback. In this case it made no sense, but good effort. Keep trying and you might be able to carry on a conversation with people. You can do it.

Videos of Wal-Mart Corporate Shenanigans Surface
Monday, April 14, 2008
This is a rush transcript from “The O’Reilly Factor,” April 11, 2008. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.
LAURA INGRAHAM, GUEST HOST: In the second “Unresolved Problem” segment tonight: some embarrassing videos of Wal-Mart corporate retreats are making the rounds — videos that Wal-Mart would rather you not see.
About 15,000 tapes spanning about 30 years show Wal-Mart big shots at work and at play, including this video featuring male employees dressed in women’s lingerie and singing.
LAURA RIES, CO-AUTHOR, “THE ORIGIN OF BRANDS”: Great to be here.
INGRAHAM: First of all, how could a company as smart as Wal-Mart be so stupid as to not have a confidentiality agreement with this video company? It’s insane.
RIES: It is absolutely insane. This is the world’s largest retailer, over 300 billion in business. Don’t they have a whole building of lawyers that should have seen this thing coming?
I mean, sure in the ‘70s Sam Walton could do a handshake deal on the golf course. But this isn’t the 70’s. We don’t have Sam Walton. And you have to be a lot smarter. This is a really, really sloppy mistake by management.
INGRAHAM: Back in 1987, Laura, there was one particular event where the male employees were wearing women’s lingerie. They were singing, which I find even more disturbing. They were singing “Walking Around in Women’s Underwear” to the tune of “Walking in the Winter Wonderland.”
OK, no one messes with “Walking in the Winter Wonderland,” OK? And to do it and bastardize that song and those lyrics, that’s it. OK, that’s where I draw the line.
I mean, does it really matter though in the long term? I mean, does this have real legal implications for Wal-Mart, given this billion-dollar suit? Or is this just kind of for our amusement?
RIES: Well, this is entirely embarrassing, of course. I mean, look, we’re coming off of three years where Lee Scott has done a really great job of improving Wal-Mart’s image. And this could be damaging in the litigation case. I think that’s the one where they can dig out these little bits and nuggets of who said what at the meetings could be very damaging. For shoppers, I don’t think shoppers care at all.
But it really brings to the point: Why are they taping these meetings anyway? Why do they have a library of 30 years of things that people said at Christmas parties? This is not a good idea. So many companies do it, and I just don’t know why they do it. Taping things like this can only lead to trouble. In this case it certainly did.
INGRAHAM: Laura, shouldn’t companies at this point, given the YouTube age and the MySpace and Facebook and all this stuff that’s happening and all these videos being posted online, isn’t it smart at meetings like this to absolutely frisk people for cell phones…
RIES: Absolutely.
INGRAHAM: ...so you don’t have the possibility of grainy cell phone videos?
RIES: Absolutely.
INGRAHAM: And obviously, larger cameras not allowed in these things. I mean, you should behave, too, obviously. But I mean, anything can also be taken out of context.
RIES: And that’s a great point, because these things, in fact, are being taken out of context. Hey, a lot of shenanigans go on at these corporate meetings. They’re there to have fun. And, you know, men dressing up, hey, if that’s what you want to do. But take it out of context, they look like fools.
And sure, these companies should really crack down, because we do live in the Internet age where these things do get out. And listen, video is a lot more damaging than documents. A leaked memo, yes, that can hurt. That can help in litigation. But a leaked video, that really leaves egg on your face and trouble in the courtroom.
Hey, Laura, thanks so much for your perspective.
RIES: Great to be here.

Hopefully, a jury will NOT take it out of context and see that they were just having fun. Have we gotten so up tight, that people can’t take a joke anymore? Maybe, if people learned to laugh a little more, we would have less problems.
