Asda Launches New Websites to Boost Recruitment
Wal-Mart’s wholly-owned UK subsidiary, Asda, has just spent over $180,000 launching two websites recruiting employees for its stores. Unlike in the U.S., where Wal-Mart is essentially unrivaled, the U.K. retail market is extremely competitive for Asda, and the store must be having trouble hiring and retaining employees. We can’t imagine that the company’s notoriously bad labor practices have anything to do with it.
The video above, taken from one of Asda’s new websites, discusses the benefits of working at Asda (read the transcript here (PDF)). Let’s take a look at just what those benefits are.
1. “It’s not just your salary or your car allowance at all.” Benefit number one: we will pay you!
2. “We get a benefits book which gives us all our discounts on theme parks and car parking at airports and things like that, just because you work at ASDA.”
Who needs a living wage when you can get a dollar off at the airport parking garage?
3. “I think my favourite benefit at ASDA is the Sharesave Scheme.” That is, just like everyone else in the capitalist system, employees are entitled to buy shares of the company stock. In fact, we’d love it if you did: the executives’ yachts aren’t going to repaint themselves.
4. “The bonus is another really key benefit which all colleagues are eligible to get.” That is, not everyone will actually get a bonus, but you are entitled to keep your dreams of one alive.
5. “I also get a 10% discount card, which is great, which is off my groceries and everything. When I’ve got a big family to feed it’s really good.” Please read the fine print on this one: employees are only eligible for discounts after three months of employment, and even then, the discount only applies to select items. Despite this, we encourage employees to spend as much money as possible at the company store.
6. “It’s really flexible working here. I do college as well, I’m part time and you fit your hours around working, or whatever you’re doing.” Read: most of Wal-Mart’s employees are part time! Some of them even have second jobs, just to keep afloat!
7. “There’s a great focus at ASDA on celebrating success.” It’s easier to focus on “success” than “higher wages.” Natch.

I have heard from other poster’s that we are in love… I hope you are female. Not that there’s anything wrong with it if you are not… Since I am a Ghost now I hope your husband and my greiving wife won’t mind… Actually she’s been having a party since my untimely demise. She worked for the Bush family for many years. I am now hovering in the netherworld where stupidity of humans is not really a big deal… When you cross over, One thing is that as Jesus tried to tell us, forgiveness is the order of the day. Truth be told the whole Walmart thing is just part of the plan. How bad are you willing to screw over your neighbor to save a handfull of dollars. They even don’t mind Larry up here, who was ultimately responsible for my demise in human form. “Greed” the ultimate sin has been legitimatized by Wal*Mart. The republicans and Democrats will point fingers at each other. Ignoring the fact that isues may have more than two sides.... The only reason that things have come down to 2 sides is that it is easier to manage by the bad guys. I just found out that my family will do very well under the bail out. I doubt that the Wal*Mart people will fair as well. And by the way, Vote Democrat in the next election. You ain’t got nuthin to lose. God told me so.
Thanks Larrry! hings have never been better! I don’t know how Manhattan is doing without me… But I’ll let you know by the end of the week.

I just used up a LOT of political capital up here and God has told me that evn though you are entitled to your “Artistic” Persona, He himself is hoping that you will direct you artistic tendencies to FOX news. He/she thinks that would be funny. Actually I agree with the all powerful one. It is a long and tedious procces trying to make sense of your work. We both think that it would be funny to see how the fox people would try to bend your post to there views.
I’m just passing this along. I’vewritten some poetry in my time but I would not inflict it on people I respect.

No wonder this country is so FU. We’ve got our government trying to bail out greedy banks to the tune of $700 billion or so. This amounts to $2,000 for every man, woman, and child in the United States.
In the meantime, we’ve got McCain who’s lipping off about Obama wanting to raise taxes...what a JOKE! This from the guy who said just days ago, the economy was fundamentally strong. He’s also the guy who thought the Vietnam War was “winnable” and that the U.S. got out too soon. If anyone votes for that guy they should check themselves in to the closest mental hospital.
Also yesterday, we were treated to Bill “I never inhaled” Clinton, making a “celebrity” appearance on “The View.” WOW! He looked so “presidential” sitting between Whoopi and “Babba Wah Wah.”
I’m to the point where I don’t care much anymore about the election. Either way, this country is going to get exactly what it deserves!

At least you haven’t sunk to the ‘double exclamation point’ point yet!!
Screwed. I can understand your frustration so I have borrowed the <u>Serenity Prayer</i>, familiar to all you AA alum, right RDS?
God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.*
It’s the wisdom part that gets a little sticky.
*If that doesn’t work, I recommend a stiff drink or a plump blunt.

That’s the Problem
It’s the wisdom part that gets a little sticky.
I haven’t seen too much “wisdom” coming out of Washington in my lifetime. No wonder George “W” wants fast action on the Republican’s latest bailout. I’m sure he’s not exactly pleased with holding the record.
We learn now that the $700 million bailout of banks has a name.... T.A.R.P (Troubled Asset Relief Program)
At first glance, I thought it might have stood for Tired of Asshole Republicans in Power.
Check out the list of great bailouts:
Penn Central Railroad (1970)
Lockheed Aircraft Corp (1971)
Franklin National Bank (1974)
New York City (1975)
Chrysler (1980)
Savings and Loan Bailout (1989)
Airline Industry Bailout (2001)
Bear Stearns (2008)
Freddie Mae/Freddie Mac (2008)
American International Group (2008)
Troubled Asset Relief Program (2008)
The last one, just for the record, is about $38 billion dollars more than ALL of the other bailouts combined. And the other great thing about it, they ALL occured during a Republican administration.
Let’s here it for capitalism and “free trade”! Who needs to know how to run or manage a business when you have the government to bail you out?

Not sure where you get your history lessons, Mr. Screwed, but last time I checked, Jimmy Carter was running the show in all but a few weeks of 1980.
That’s all.

So? What’s Your Point, bbrd?
So I was off a little on the year of the Chrysler bailout… Carter was in fact in the White House.
That doesn’t negate the many other bailouts which started with Nixon in 1970. Then there was Ford, George H.W. Bush, and let’s not forget the leader of the pack, George W. Bush.
Care to argue which party is more of a friend to “Big Business” and has been screwing this country more?

ddrb,
I remember the Savings and Loan Scandal and Bailout in the 80’s but between Iran/Contra, Arms for Hostages, Helping Osama set up the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, and selling Saddam Hussein chemical weapons, I can’t keep the timeline straight anymore on the Reagan/Bush years.
My office voted on the worst US Presidents of All time and came up with: James Buchanan, Herbert Hoover and George W. Bush (in no particular order).

“Who needs a living wage when you can get a dollar off at the airport parking garage?”
The concept of a ‘living wage’ is a ‘pipe dream’, there is an old saying, “The more you make, the more you spend”, therefore, the wage to live, needs to constantly keep getting higher!!

So? What’s Your Point, bbrd?
That you’re not always as “right” as you would like others to think.
So I was off a little on the year of the Chrysler bailout… Carter was in fact in the White House.
Just a little - and I wouldn’t exactly call it a “bailout”—it was, in fact a guaranteed loan which Chrysler managed to pay-off during the tenure of Lee Iacocca.

Did you see where Congress ‘bailed out’ the UAW? I say the UAW, because the ‘Bail out’ only went to the 3 unionized automakers!! Remember them, the ones Alex in Ontario says makes ‘inferior’ vehicles?
Seems the non-union ones didn’t need a ‘bail out’!!

Yes, I did.

In all fairness, the free pass was given to our “Big Three”, which are all American-owned companies. Hyundai, Toyota, etc. (even though they have factories in this country) still report to their respective home countries.
Remember them, the ones Alex in Ontario says makes ‘inferior’ vehicles?
If he says so, but the “Big Three” has significant manufacturing ops employing thousands north of the border, too (Some “True Canadian” he turned-out to be!).
