Could You Spend 30 Days in a Wal-Mart?

A group of three enterprising young men are spending 30 days in a Wal-Mart, subsisting on things they can purchase in the store. Aside from the sheer stamina required to live under fluorescent lights for 24 hours a day, it’s been an interesting experiment. What will they learn about the inner workings of a Wal-Mart store?

I woke up this morning to the sudden thought that I haven’t seen the sky in 8 days! I’ve spent the first week frequenting the back of the store and it has really warped my concept of time. For me the mornings are determined by the selection of staff. Margret and Geoff are both here as well as mary-anne, PJ (who works the register), and Trisha in the photo studio. The nights are occupied by my lonely friend Allen and the small Filipino lady that reorganizes the shoes when all the customers have gone home.

UPDATE: Guess it wasn’t true after all. Way to cop out on the sociological integrity scale, guys.

maybe they could spend there time better by helping poor people than learning how to put the screws to the workers and thousands of slave labores. there time would be better spent.

And the point of this stunt is what?

I have just a few thoughts on this one.  First of all… what’’s the point?  What will spending 30 days inside a Wal-Mart reveal about Wal-Mart that we don’t already know?

Secondly, I would think Wal-Mart has given its approval to this little stunt.  Is this another version of Wal-Mart’s now imfamous PR fiasco, “Wal-Marting Across America?”

Now if we could get a few people to spend 30 days shadowing Lee Scott, that might be interesting!

I’ve heard of silly but this is a bit much. And are they going to tell us anything we don’t already know about Wal-Mart? This is like the movie Super Size Me. Remember the guy who ate nothing but McDonald’s food for 1 month? Most of us already knew McDonald’s food is not a healty diet for 1 month. But no, he ate it anyway. And did we learn anything we didn’t already know? Not really. And he got really sick in the process. This Wal-Mart 30 day thing is the same thing. What a waste of someone’s time!!

Kinda reminds me of Sartre’s No Exit except in this case Hell would be eternity inside a Wal-Mart!

The horror!
