Disabled Veteran denied wheelchair at North Carolina Wal-Mart
Disabled Man Denied Access to Wal-Mart’s Electric Wheelchair [WRAL-TV (Raleigh, NC)]
A disabled veteran from Halifax County said he was twice denied access to an electronic wheelchair at a Wal-Mart in Roanoke Rapids recently.
Thomas Young lost his leg to diabetes six months ago. He has been adjusting to life without it. Simple things like shopping at Wal-Mart can be difficult, Young said, but nothing prepared him for what happened at the store Sunday.
“I just come up here on Father’s Day to get a few things, do a favor for the wife,” Young said. “The grandson had come along, and I sent the grandson in to pick up the electric cart.”
Young’s grandson, Zach Shumaker, said when he went to retrieve the cart and bring it to his grandfather, store officials told him it was against store policy.
Young said his wife then called the store manager, who apologized and said that was just not true. The manager said Young could come back anytime and get a cart.
After the apology, Young and his grandson returned to Wal-Mart the next day. When Shumaker tried again to take the cart to his grandfather, store officials told him he was not able to get the cart past the pylons, Young said.
A Wal-Mart spokesperson said the scooters are there to help people like Young, but the rule is that they can leave the store only if accompanied by store personnel. Company officials said they are looking into why that didn’t happen in this case.
“I thought they should have made at least the manager come out to the truck and talk to me while I was still sitting in the vehicle,” Young said. “It would have made it much easier to swallow.”
Young said he is writing a letter to Wal-Mart’s corporate headquarters, but said he has no intentions of filing a lawsuit.
The company apologized again Thursday and said it’s their goal to provide a motorized cart for everyone who needs one.

Communication.....communication....communication!!!
What would have happened if the grandson was driving the cart in the lot to pick up Grandpa and he was hit by a car or he ran into someone and injured them??? That would be Wal-Mart’s fault too, right? They let the grandson take the cart so they are responsible for what he does with it!!

MICHAEL D,
I’m sure, had the grandson went to the greeter and explained the situation, they would have taken care of it!! My wife was recovering from a broken hip and went to Wal-Mart and my grandson asked the greeter and they sent out someone with a wheelchair, who took her to an electric cart!!

Headlines… “Walmart Discriminates Against the Disabled”
At least that’s what they want you to think because they choose to pick ONE isolated incident that Michael explains very clearly was mishandled because of a lack of communcation. But no less… “Walmart Discriminates Against the Disabled”.
It’s just like me saying “Unions Cost Members Their Jobs” because I met a former UAW worker who lost his job because his compensation package was too costly. Oh wait a minute… I may have met one person but I would propose there are TENS OF THOUSANDS of people like him so I guess it’s not the same is it?

I have been handicapped for nearly four years due to a lung condition. I live in both Florida and Delaware and do a lot of business in both Super Wal Mart and Sams stores. In all cases I have always been quite satisfied by receiving excellent treatment and service in any of the stores I’ve made purchases. I see a lot of people working in these store that otherwise would not have jobs without them because they do not fit the mold of being a perfect person in a perfect politicly correct world. I read complaints that Wal Mart in putting the little home town stores out of business. My opinion on this is, if the small home town stores were not so over priced and were properly stocked to where you didn’t have to go to a dozen stores to get what you want they wouldn’t have any problems with buisness loss.
To make a long story shorter, if you don’t care for Wal Mart go to the higher priced under stocked stores but in the process get off Wal Marts back and find some other cause to dog.

Annecdote:I see a lot of people working in these store that otherwise would not have jobs without them because they do not fit the mold of being a perfect person in a perfect politicly correct world.
Fact:The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has had to file more suits against the Bentonville billionaires club for cases of disability discrimination than any other corporation. A top EEOC lawyer told Business Week:
“I have never seen this kind of blatant disregard for the law.”
A word to the wise for the casual reader. What sounds good isn’t always what it appears to be.

Ken V,
“The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has had to file more suits against the Bentonville billionaires club for cases of disability discrimination than any other corporation”
And, I guess the FACT that Wal-Mart has more disabled people working for them then most other corporations, has nothing to do with it and neither does the “Deep Pockets” of Wal-Mart!!

Bad guess, RDS. This has to do with a “blatant disregard for the law”.

Ken V,
“This has to do with a “blatant disregard for the law”.”
I’m sorry, but, wouldn’t a “blatant disregard for the law”, be if Wal-Mart refused to hire the disabled and refused to provide handicapped parking, motorized carts, wheelchairs, etc. for disabled customers? Instead, they do all of these things, much more than other retailers I have seen!!

Ken V,
I had no questions, I go by what I see, first, I see handicapped people working at Wal-mart, I see motorized carts and wheelchairs at the entranceways, and I have seen disabled customers at the stores shopping!!
Just because there are complainers in the world and they are willing to forward their claims of injustice and look for some kind of payoff from it, doesn’t always mean that the claims are justified!! Just look at the guy suing the drycleaner for millions of dollars for some lost pants, is he seeking justice or a big payoff?

We’ve always had this disagreement, RDS. You are inclined to give personal experience and annecdotal stories more weight than verifiable facts.
I’ll let the reader decide which is acceptable.

“I’ll let the reader decide which is acceptable.”
Sounds good, people will see what they choose to see, using the half full/half empty method!! Some will see 4 motorized carts and say, “is that all”, others will say that’s plenty!! The main point is: “You can’t please everybody”!!

Ken V,
“Or, to put it more simply; Who are you going to believe? Richard and RDS or the EEOC?”
I prefer to put it even more simply; Who are you going to believe, Ken and the government, or your OWN eyes!! People who SHOP at Wal-Mart, can SEE for themselves, instead of listening to people who say they DON’T and wouldn’t shop at Wal-Mart. A picture (seeing it for yourself) is worth a thousand words from a guy who admits, his mission in life is to destroy Wal-Mart!!

If you could see the hidden* costs of Wal-Mart, RDS, it wouldn’t be necessary for people like me to point out the truth to people like you.
...a guy who admits his mission in life is to destroy Wal-Mart!!
You make that sound like it’s a bad thing.

Naah, it’s more like being unable to see that besides what you pay at the check-out, Wal-Mart’s business model costs you more in indirect ways, i.e., increased taxes to pay for the burden on infrastructure as well as state and federal susistence programs. Stuff like that.
The fact that you are unaware of them, RDS, only proves my point.

Ken V,
“Wal-Mart’s business model costs you more in indirect ways, i.e., increased taxes to pay for the burden on infrastructure as well as state and federal susistence programs. Stuff like that.”
And, you fail to realize that most of those things would be paid for by the taxpayer, even if Wal-Mart didn’t exist!! People without jobs were on Federal and State susistence, as showed by the higher poverty rate I showed you!! You are also disregarding the sales tax revenue to the state and the income tax revenue to both the state and federal governments by Wal-Mart employees and their suppliers employees!! The governments don’t just do these things for ‘fun’, they are investing in the future of the community!! And, they are not ALL stupid, as SDV maintains!!

Wednesday, June 27 at 11:57 AM
...even if Wal-Mart didn’t exist!!
Now you’re talking, RDS.
… ONE isolated incident...
Tsk, tsk, Mary, you should be ashamed of yourself. One isolated incident, indeed. Anyone wants to catch a glimpse of the “ONE” incident just Google or Dogpile Walmart EEOC for a look-see.
And supposing you and Michael are right, nothing more than a break down in communications. You’d think a company with such a miserable track record when it comes to compliance with the ADA would be more sensitized to situations like this, but they’re not.
So instead of in-control management, we have another PR black eye for the Beast.
Bravo!

Don’t Make Any JUDGEMENT CALL on Mr. Young and his family until you live in this small rural town of Halifax County. A places where people are so far behind times that they don’t any know that there are other alternatives to life. Wal-mart is one of the few companies that offer a large amount of employment to Halifax County. Wal-Mart employees, a great deal of them barely made it out of High School (study the statistics of Halifax County,NC)and don’t have a clue about how to:
1. Problem Solve
(see pass the situation that is in front of them, if the computer don’t give the answer the people are lost).
2. Use Any Critical Thinking Skills (Just using these three simple steps could have alleviated this problem.)
a. Find the chair. (If it is not in front of them they can’t see it)
b. Hire or Find someone in the store to assist customers with special needs.
c. Finally walk out to the car to assist the gentleman with the ELECTRIC WHEELCHAIR.
Especially since the man is coming into WAL-MART to shop and pay their salaries. (Now that’s just food for thought.)
3. Use Quality Customer Services
Please, thank you, how can I help you, do you need any help, etc….. We will never hear any of this at our local WAL-MART!
This story is very disheartening considering it is simple things that could have been done to stop this from being blown out of proportion and Halifax County WAL-MART Store Managers and Management Staff don’ get it! (SAD FACE)
The bottom line is Mickey Parker needs some Problem Solving and Critical Thinking Training, so she can pass it down to ALL of her EMPLOYEES!
