Employee Speakout Update: Inaugural Edition

Starting now, Wal-Mart Watch will be periodically updating you on some of the new comments submitted to our Employee Speak-Out site.  These comments are sent in from visitors to our site who are former or current employees of Wal-Mart and its sister companies, who have been victims of the systematic abuse and discrimination that Wal-Mart is known for inflicting upon its employees.  Remember that if you have a story to tell about working at Wal-Mart, we encourage you to tell us about it - we’ll put it up on the web and let your voice be heard.

As we look forward to the next 4 years, we hope that this website will be among the many tools that Wal-Mart workers use to help change Wal-Mart and their lives for the better.

Workplace stress leads to tragedy for pregnant worker:

“I was a manager in the housewares department. I just got my separation notice from them for not returning to work from my leave of absence. There is a reason I didn’t return; I feel they are responsible for the death of my baby.”

Anonymous on Age-Based Termination:

“Wal Mart is systematically targeting anyone over 40 years of age for firings through systematically assigning the heaviest, most back breaking jobs to that class of people in the facility. Managers are encouraged to pressure senior employees into quitting and firing to ensure that young strong backs are maintained in the facility.”

Anonymous on How Not to Vote

I attended a meeting that was conducted by a market manager. We were not told to not vote for Obama

Sam Walton again on exploitation of people-

Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton once said, “I pay low wages. I can take advantage of that. We’re going to be successful, but the basis is a very low-wage, low-benefit model of employment.”

I came to walmart because, after being laid off, I had no choice, unemployment ran out and I had to work. While I hate working the nights I am forced to work, if I want any hours, I blame corporate, not the local mgt. I desperately need full time, but that is not possible. If it looks like you are going over 32 hours, they tell you to come in later, or take a longer lunch.
Turnover not only means nothing to them, it is what they hope for.
I just hope to god I find something else soon.
I like my coworkers and the mgt, but the job sucks. I hate working until 10pm every shift, but I have no choice
I wouldn’t wish working for walmart on my worst enemy.

Jane Doe’s post shows exactly what we have been saying, she was desperate for work, and Wal-Mart became her ‘savior’, but, is she grateful, no, instead she ‘spits’ on them because the company doesn’t cater to her every desire!!  I ask you Jane, where would you be today, if you never got that ‘terrible’ job?  It is clear, that to you, a company should fulfill YOUR every NEED, instead of running the business as they see it, to keep from laying people off themselves!!  Think of this, if every ‘part time’ job there were made full time, whould you even have gotten the job you did?  Also, ‘Newbies” are always expected to work the ‘bad’ hours ‘anywhere’, so if people keep ‘quitting’, how do they expect to ever get to a position where they finally get the ‘good’ hours!!  It’s called “Paying your dues”!!  Wal-Mart is NOT a ‘charity’, they have to run their business so it can be best for ‘all’, not just some ‘new hires’!!  There are two types of thinking, those who “wish” for things to be their way and ‘bitch’ because they don’t have it and those who “see” things as they are and are grateful for having ‘something’ rather than ‘nothing’!!  You need to ask yourself this:  “Are you ‘better off’ today, then you were BEFORE you got that job at Wal-Mart”?  If so, then stop complaining and work to make things better!!

An organization has to EARN the respect of those who serve it. Your Walmart is not respected as a responsible employer.

Alex,

“An organization has to EARN the respect of those who serve it. Your Walmart is not respected as a responsible employer.”

That’s YOUR view of things!!  In most companies, it works this way:  They tell you what they pay and if you agree, they hire you, then after a while, they evaluate your performance and ‘reward’ you based on the evaluation!!  It is NOT:  You graciously agree to be hired, YOU tell them how much you should EARN, then after awhile, YOU evaluate their ability to follow your orders and meet your needs, while YOU complain you ‘Need More’, then, based on YOUR evaluation of how well they ‘buckeled’ to YOUR demands, and if they DIDN’T, you FORCE them, through a STRIKE, to meet your demands!!

OH, I forgot, that second way, is the UNION way, where ‘job performance’ means NOTHING!!
