Fact Sheet: Congressional Toy Safety Hearings
As Congressional hearings commence to investigate the dangerous Chinese toy recalls, the House and Senate are calling some of the industry’s largest players to testify about their roles in the process. Mattel, Toys “R” Us, the Toy Industry Association and others are all testifying at a U.S. Senate hearing on “Toy Safety Standards.” But we won’t hear from the biggest name of all—Wal-Mart—which has used is political power to shift blame to suppliers and avoid taking responsibility for its role in the massive toy recall scandal.
Wal-Mart recently launched its “toy safety net” program, but it is noticeably vague on testing requirements and details. While the public focus is currently on lead paint, many recalls have occurred due to other hazards. In addition, Wal-Mart’s primary testing laboratory, Consumer Testing Laboratories, lacks both NRTL and A2LA accreditations, is headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, and by all accounts, gets 80-90% of its business from Wal-Mart. Can it really be considered third party “independent testing?”
It is also well-known in the industry that most toys for the holidays are already on the way to Wal-Mart stores or in its warehouses. [Inbound Logistics, November 2006; Honolulu Advertiser, 9/9/07]
Wal-Mart’s plan to require manufacturers to re-submit testing certifications for existing toys is unrealistic if such documentation did not exist initially. Will Wal-Mart really refuse to put those products on the shelves without the documents? That seems unlikely.

Was the proverb “what you don’t know can’t hurt you” coined in bentonville?

You have to admit,
It poses questions as to why the largest retail toy importer in the world, did not testify before congress, and left it up to their competitor.
You’d think the ‘goody two shoes’ Wal-Mart would Jump at the chance to show its ‘Disney Like’
Purity .

walmart was far more conspicuous by its absence than by its presence---and said volumes about the retailer without saying a word....

Yeah, Mona Williams should have jumped out there. You don’t suppose that it has finally occurred to someone in Bentonville that when it comes to Wal-Mart the less said, the better?

Maybe this was the problem-
Scott Warns China Wal-Mart Suppliers Re ‘Standards’
Greg Levine, 10.20.05
Scott said the discount giant would be more involved in its overseas suppliers’ businesses, to be sure they are accountable. He said Wal-Mart Stores (nyse: WMT - news - people ) will work with them to hone in on new products that meet demand for higher standards, such as new apparel lines based on organically grown cotton the chain plans to sell next year.
The CEO then took a strident tone towards its Pacific pipeline. “The factories in China are going to end up having to be held up to the same standards as the factories in the U.S.,” Scott said. “There will be a day of reckoning for retailers. If somebody wakes up and finds out that children that are down the river from that factory where you save three cents a foot in the cost of garden hose are developing cancers at significant rates--so that the American public can save three cents a foot--those things won’t be tolerated, and they shouldn’t be tolerated.”

Nothing like holding WalMart management to their word.
“...more involved in its overseas suppliers’ businesses, to be sure they are accountable.”
WalMart/Edelman ‘war room’ imbeciles- It’s Mattel’s problem. It is China’s problem. Responsibility for WalMart supplier contracting for all this crap, let’s blame the unions.

SDV: According to your latest entry, Lee(not so great)Scott says,in 2005, that Chinese factories will be held to the same standars as u.s. factories-that should explain lot about the LACK of standards -there are very few american factories remaining in, 2007(,especially toys and textiles)...by which to form any comparisons

ddrb,
You got me there. Perhaps I had a modicum/iota of thought that Scott was actually alluding to accountability and intolerance of poisoning America’s kids. And yet you remind me of the simple fact that Lee Scott is WalMart’s chief weasel.
“Anybody can cut prices, but it takes brains to produce a better article.”

SDV
Ross Perot made a “better article”? He founded Electronic Data Systems, which he grew with the help of some very shady government contracts (not shady as in corrupt but shady as in black ops). He sold EDS to GM for stock. When he became a pain in the ass on GM’s board, they bought him out and gave him extra to go away. He then founded Perot Systems, which isn’t exactly setting the world on fire.
At what point did Ol’ Ross PRODUCE a better article? I have a lot of respect for him but getting pricing advice from Ross Perot is like getting Oil Production Data from Lee Scott. Different business, different product.
Cutting prices does not equal success. GM, Ford and Chrysler cut prices to the bone and offered deep incentives and, STILL, Toyota and Honda stole their sales. If cutting prices was all their was to it, everyone would cut prices. That is the lazy way of explaining Wal-Mart’s success. In fact, Wal-Mart’s success is built on selling goods to people who cannot afford more expensive goods, giving people options, intelligent use of IT and Logistics, disciplined management, fanatical cost control and tough sourcing. If price cutting is a 100% guaranteed success, why doesn’t the UFCW open 200 stores and pay $20 per hour plus benefits while undercutting Wal-Mart?

“Cutting prices does not equal success”?----------But isn’t that exactlly the intended message of “Save more.Live better.”?

Nick,
Not surprising that the mention of Ross Perot brings out your ‘class envy’. That giant sucking sound you hear… it is the WalMart/Bentonville ‘war room’ imbeciles posting comments on the internet.
