Wal-Mart Enters Banking Through the Back Door,
Targets Low-Income Customers
The company announced this week that it would begin selling Visa money cards, what BloggingStocks calls the lesser of two evils: the card is only slightly less expensive than nearly-criminal check cashing services. Writing on the Wal has a rundown of all the fees. Behind the Counter details the face-to-face interaction that these MoneyCards require. Wal-Mart, so eager to push the card, requires customers to actively accept or refuse it, further slowing down check out lines (see below.)
More MoneyCard Drama [Behind the Counter]
So I sold my first Wal-Mart MoneyCard today.
Personally, I’m starting to feel a bit ethically conflicted about the MoneyCard thing - and about my time at Wal-Mart as a whole.
For starters, there is the whole “Do you want to put your paycheck on a Wal-Mart MoneyCard” question that the register FORCES us to ask EVERY SINGLE TIME someone cashes a paycheck. I literally CANNOT give them the money until they press “YES” or “NO” - and the customer is never looking at the debit reader.
So I have to be polite and ask the question for them - thus being forced to sell something that I personally don’t agree with. I also usually have to explain the product - thus FURTHER selling it. “What’s a MoneyCard?” “What’s it do?” Etcetera.
Wal-Mart’s Newest Venture: Money Man To The Poor [Marketing Daily]
TO HECK WITH LUXURY MARKETING. In its latest move, Wal-Mart Stores is targeting the nation’s poorest demographic...The announcement is hardly a stunner. Wal-Mart, which leases space to local banks in many of its stores, has been toying with the idea of its own consumer bank for years. But consumer groups and politicians have always shot down its plans. In March, it withdrew its application with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. to acquire a specialty bank in Utah.
The Wal-Mart Weekly: back to customer service basics [BloggingStocks]
Wal-Mart has been hit hard recently by slower sales and competition from more nimble competitors like Target. Could the sales of more specialized merchandise assist the world’s largest retailer in regaining its footing?
With Wal-Mart officials admitting that existing stores is more important than expanding right now, what exactly could be done in the customer service arena to make Wal-Mart more customer friendly? Let’s find out.
Wal-Mart Renounces Support for Gay Group
Wal-Mart announced today that it would stop supporting the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, a concession to the store’s large conservative Christian customer base. Wal-Mart’s anti-GLBT policies aren’t limited to political groups: Wal-Mart has a history of not supporting its gay and lesbian employees, either. (PDF) Several bloggers have more to say on Wal-Mart’s announcement.
Wal-Mart stops donations to gay and lesbian groups [BloggingStocks]
One step forward, two steps back. That seems to be the story of Wal-Mart’s (NYSE: WMT) efforts to spruce up its image. For every new environmental initiative, there’s a Julie Roehm-type story. Now the latest bit of bad news: The Bentonville retailer has decided to stop donating money to gay and lesbian groups after conservative Christian groups threatened a boycott… I would be a lot happier if Wal-Mart would stand up and say “We support many groups including some Christian groups, and we also support LGBT groups. Deal with it.”
But more importantly, I would like to see Wal-Mart join the more than half of Fortune 500 companies providing health care benefits to the domestic partners of its LGBT employees. If they do that, I’ll forgive them.
Wal-Mart Losing Its Pride [OutZone]
We don’t shop at Wal-Mart because … well we’re gay and, you know, into fashion. But we had always heard how the giant chain store had placed an importance on the gay and lesbian consumer, even having introduced a gay-themed jewelry line in their stores.
Well nothing stops the well-meaning support from a major American company like those Christian conservatives who threatened a boycott of Wal-Mart if they did not cease and desist supporting the gay movement.
Wal-Mart Drops the Gays [Queerty]
While one would expect an outcry from gay activists, it seems even they, like the AFA, can’t quit Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart’s love affair with the gays has come to an end. The mega-retailer joined forces with the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce last year, but has again folded to conservative pressure and disavowed its gay ways...While one would expect an outcry from gay activists, it seems even they, like the AFA, can’t quit Wal-Mart.

Since I have been warmly welcomed by RDS and Mary, I thought I’d give it a stab.
This is what WalMart Watch, my boy SanDiego, Big Texas, and Jonpierre DON’T want consumers to know.
RDS mentioned elsewhere about the GreenDot card being sold at drug chains (and other places). Just saw a TV commercial, and I thought I’d share this nugget with everyone:
The fee schedule for those cards sold at those cards is available for the uninformed, right here
https://www.greendotonline.com/AcctMgmt/Controls/MyMCCard/Support/CardholderAgreement.aspx#fees
So, what is it that WalMart is doing wrong, again??
Have a great day!

I did not post the above and that is why I changed my blog name in the first place!! These people are too ignorant to come back with logical and factual responces, so they use these childish tactics!!

Just shows you what can happen when the TRUTH is presented..........
Now, back to the story--how about that comparison of the WalMart card versus the ones sold at the grocery/drug chains?

I would like to warmly welcome you too Jake.
Now on to business. I don’t remember ever commenting on Walmart putting their own bank in their store locations.
You said that “This is what WalMart Watch, ..... and Jonpierre DON’T want consumers to know.”
Help me to understand what I don’t want consumers to know since I don’t care if your Walmart puts a bank in.
In fact retailers here have had their own banks for probably 10 years in Canada, except Walmart which is asleep at the wheel.
Also you may want to check to see if your fingers are on the home keys when you type Jonquiere. Notice it doesn’t have a p in it?

Hey ScrewedByWal-mart!
I was wondering where you went off to. The last time I saw you post was a few weeks ago calling out Nick to tell the “whole truth” as to who he was and I suggested you put him in his place by telling everyone, once and for all, if your true name was Tom Boese. Come on, teach Nick a lesson and set an example for truth, honesty and complete transparity.

Mary
There is a 100% foolproof method by which you can ascertain the validity of your arguments with the WMW people: the personal attacks start. When the arguments get to be too difficult for the WMW people to handle, they start the name calling, the insults and the personal crap.
If we could all just try and refrain from insults and base our discussions on the merits of a given argument? That would be the mature thing to do. I will admit that I have, from time to time, stooped to the personal insult level. The lack of logic and intelligence displayed by some of the people on this board raises my blood pressure.
If Americans are this stupid, it is small wonder that China is now selling us so much stuff.

Nick...Are You Really That Out ot Touch With Reality?
“If we could all just...base our discussions on the merits of a given argument?”
It seems the only “merits of a given argument” that matter to you are your own. Point me to any posting of yours in the last year and a half at least where you have CONCEDED THE POINT to someone with an opposing view. You’re not interested in dialogue here Nick...you’re too busy cutting and pasting your next post.
All I seem to see on this blog is this Sisyphisian rolling of the “debate” rock to the near summit of Wal-Mart Mountain. Show me where you and your little Lap Dog Buddies like RDS, Jake, Mary and others are making any more progress in convincing the rest of the readers of this blog that Wal-Mart is the best thing to happen to America since the Boston Tea Party!
You said it yourself Nick: “If Americans are this stupid, it is small wonder that China is now selling us so much stuff.”
It’s not a question of “if,"… the majority of the unwashed masses in this country REALLY ARE THAT STUPID! They think nothing about spending that $3.99 or $4.99 on some cheap plastic trinket that will probably break in less than 24 hours, just to keep the kiddies quiet in the Wal-Mart store while while mommy and daddy are busy shopping for more cheap plastic crap!
OK… so let be fair about it, Wal-Mart isn’t the only one doing this. Anyone with even one eye partly open can see this phenomonon happening on a daily basis at places like Walgreens, CVS Pharmacies, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Target, K-Mart, Flying-J’s, Pilots, Travel America Centers and this list goes on and on.
So this makes it all OK, right Nick? Everyone is doing it! No damn wonder they have to widen the Panama Canal in order to accomodate ever larger Chinese vessels.
If Americans would think before they purchase something and learn to read the labels on the crap they buy.... maybe, just maybe, some of the cheap Chinese crap would just rot in the middle of the Pacific Ocean somewhere. Truly informed consumers look beyond the price of something and consider the cost!
Nikita Khrushchev may have been a little ahead of his time:
“I once said, “We will bury you,” and I got into trouble with it. Of course we will not bury you with a shovel. Your own working class will bury you.”
That’s right....America’s Working poor, with the unprececented debt loads they carry just to keep their heads above water, are sometimes forced by economic necessity to shop at Wal-Mart. This will ultimately be the death of America. And the Chinese are laughing all the way to the bank, while America is bogged down politically, militarily, and economically in an unjustified Middle East conflict between warring tribal factions.
Oh--- and let’s not forget all the hundreds of thousands of jobs that are being outsourced and shipped out of this country all in the name of corporate profit. It’s not a pretty picture!
America’s destiny is still in the balance. No one… certainly you the least Nick, will ever convince me that the Wal-Mart we see evolving today is good for America!

Listen America’s working class:
“the majority of the unwashed masses in this country REALLY ARE THAT STUPID! ~ Screwedby”
Bet you didn’t know that you were all stupid, because you tried to keep within your budget and get the most for your dollar, right?
“That’s right....America’s Working poor, with the unprececented debt loads they carry just to keep their heads above water ~ Screwedby”
So, the solution to your problems, is to go somewhere where you have to pay more, right? Don’t buy that Toyota, buy a Cadillac instead!!
“They think nothing about spending that $3.99 or $4.99 on some cheap plastic trinket that will probably break in less than 24 hours, ~ Screwedby”
All you Wal-Mart shoppers, question: Does everything you buy at Wal-mart, last less than 24 hours, or is this just antother lie?
“Oh--- and let’s not forget all the hundreds of thousands of jobs that are being outsourced and shipped out of this country all in the name of corporate profit.”
This is the best case of non-logic I have seen, jobs are being outsourced for corporate profit, not because of higher labor costs in the U.S.!! I have recently been watching the show on the Game Channel, an old show called “Let’s Make a Deal”, on it, they give away cars and here is what is said “This brand new Buick Century - total value of this deal $2,565.00”, ask yourself, is it corporate profits that made that car now cost $25,650.00, or was it the fact, that back then an auto worker made $3.00 an hour plus $3.00 an hour in benefits and now makes $35.00 an hour with $30.00 an hour in benefits? Now, ask yourself, if it was corporate profits, why are the U.S. Auto corporations going broke, while the foreign Auto corporations are making money?
When you read these ANTI posts, actually read them and ask yourself, DOES THAT MAKE SENSE? If it doesn’t, it’s probably not true!!

Screwed
We have heard this same line of fear-mongering before, haven’t we? Remember the 1980’s? Everyone thought that Japan was going to take over the US, with their imports, their purchase of US companies and real estate, their lower production costs, their obession with quality, and their hard nosed work ethic. We had a trade deficit with Japan, their banks were lending us money hand over fist and they were going to own us. Politicians were seriously considering France-like laws to limit foreign ownership of US asets, something that would have destroyed our economy. Remember that? Well, what happened? I will tell you what happened. The fear was overblown. The underlying fundamentals were ignored. Japan was overpaying for assets and, through manipulation of its currency, was able to sell a Japan produced Toyota cheaper in the US than it was in Japan! Today, of course, Toyota has plants all over the US, kicking Detroit’s ass under the same laws, same tax structure, same environmental standards, same labor force, same logistics issues and same financial environment. However, Japan also had other issues beyond overpaying for assets. Guaranteed work for its workforce became a problem, as the population grew. Pollution, lack of fresh water, natural disasters and no natural resources hurt as well. Now, fast forward to today.
China has the world’s largest population, more than 1.5 billion people. This is 5 times the US population packed into a geographic area slightly smaller than the US. Most of the people are packed into the eastern part of the country. Political unrest boils beneath the surface. China must buy massive quantities of oil on the world market. It has a GDP that is 1/6 as large as the US but it has a labor force of 800 million people. Even assuming 11% annual GDP growth, there will never be anywhere near enough jobs to absorb these people into the workforce. China has about 18.3 billion barrels of proved oil reserves and consumes, at present rates, 2.4 billion barrels per year. What will China do when it runs out of oil reserves? China also has huge amounts of money invested in our economy and any economic downturn can only hurt them as well. They have environmental problems we can’t even imagine and they are very close to drying up their fresh water supply. Despite their huge military investments, we are powerful enough to shut down their shipping lanes and cut off their oil supply, which will cause their military machine to grind to a halt. They are also losing business to lower cost places like Vietnam. They have an average of 1 coal fired power plant PER WEEK coming online and they lack environmental standards. At least 25 miners die each week in Chinese coal mines and these are the OFFICIAL numbers. Assume at least a 2 to 1 downplay and 2,500 miners die each year in China.
In short, China is not the threat they are made out to be. They have huge, underlying, fundamental problems. They are trying to correct these problems but you can only do so much with limited space and a huge population.

NICK...TO CALL YOU DEMENTED IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT
“Despite their huge military investments, we are powerful enough to shut down their shipping lanes and cut off their oil supply, which will cause their military machine to grind to a halt.”
Yes...that’s right Nick...let’s take on the Chinese government head to head. We can do that in our spare time . Like our military isn’t stretched to the breaking point now with our entrenchment in Iraq, potential conflicts brewing with Iran and North Korea, and let’s not forget the job we never finished in Afghanistan.
What happens when China decides it no longer wants to be America’s creditor. What happens when China calls for America’s bill to be paid? Maybe they will just start seizing assets as a “down payment.” Maybe they will start by taking over Wal-Mart China...maybe Lee Scott will someday soon be reporting to Wat Went Wong. This is a lot closer to reality than your fantasy of America causing China’s military machine “to grind to a halt.”

“Were it not for the fact that SDV, Alex, (Screwed), and myself are all gentlemen and scholars........”
I have been around a couple of weeks or so and have had a lot of fun and laughs, but now I get to analyze and see how this figures with your scholarly gents.....
SanDiego--love the guy, but he is way too stressed out from working the second shift.......he is posting the same old stuff over and over (and makes embicile lists--what gives??).
Jonpierre--likes to needle my guy, RDS, and has a memory deficit disorder about remembering Quebec and Texas. Otherwise, this guy has no sense of humor......maybe if he and SanDiego hooked-up, they could do that road show......
(Screwed)--not sure what WallyWorld did to mess up his life so bad (if he really is a movie producer, he should be tanking WallyWorld, cuz if it wasn’t for them, he wouldn’t have his money making movie thing), this cat is bad news--always ragging on Nick and RDS (I think he even took a shot at me......oh, well!). Always seems hes set loose when the discussion is hitting home just a little too much for some people!
Yourself--you pretty much summed up what you’re all about, a man with a plan who wants his place in the history books. That’s cool (though when you spend too much time on a cause or crusade, you miss out on a lot of the other stuff life has to offer)......
Scholars of what, again????????????

I’m Still Waiting for YOUR “Road Show,” Jake!
I’m still waiting for the “road show” You, RDS, And Nick could provide us with. Wait...that would be more like a horror film, but it’s already been done… “Night of the Living Dead.”
Yeah… what do you mean, no sense of humor?
Remember Ken V.... it’s only funny until somebody gets hurt… then it’s hilarious.

Hey, Screwed in Anytown-
You need to chill out, m’man and count your blessings you didn’t even know you had.
Word has it you are a movie producer who does flicks about WallyWorld. If that’s true (and if you’re making a few bucks), the name “ScrewedbyWalMart” doesn’t work, cuz if it weren’t for WallyWorld, you wouldn’t have any movie-making material...........

...who wants his place in the history books...
Perfect except for the above.
A word to the wise, Brother Jake. You repeatedly tell us (anti Wal-Marters) to stay cool and chill out, but the fact is we’re the only ones having fun with this.
Try your soothing advice on the pro Wal-Mart side for a change. They’re the ones getting bent out of shape by the weakening of the Beast of Bentonville.

I notice Mr. Attack Dog/Movie Producer who got screwed by WallyWorld doesn’t make the scene unless one of you cats happen to strike a nerve that my man, SanDiego and the others can’t seem to handle.......
Then, he is given his orders to pounce!

[...the fact is we’re the only ones having fun with this.]
Discrimination, violent crime, abduction and forced labor, poverty, sweatshops, being unable to support your family and afford basic healthcare, retail strip mining, labor rights violations, corruption, abuse of power, destruction of the environment… even as someone on the “pro” side of the argument, I find it hard to “have fun” with any of this. To each his own.

APPRENTLY WAL-MART IS HAVING FUN!
tjc in NY: “I find it hard to “have fun” with any of this.”
If you find the things you’ve listed to be so deplorable, why the hell do you support Wal-Mart? Put your money where your mouth is dude! Are you related to Jake?

..the things you’ve listed...
tjc does have a nice list. I have to read his/her stuff at least twice and then I’m still not sure if he/she is pro or anti?? Does my Sarcasm Detector need new batteries?
...dude!
Quit reading Brother Jake’s stuff, Screwed. It’ll rot your vocabulary!!!

SAY WHAT, tjc?
“...just “anti-anti” That would be a double negative wouldn’t it...sorta like “ain’t never” or “never none?” Do you need a refresher course in proper grammer? How about an example from the world of math… -(-2) = 2 So what you’re saying in your convoluted way is that you’re really positive, or pro-Wal-Mart?

I do. I suspect that you are a character playing a part also.
We’ll call it WWE or Walmart World Entertainment.

SCREWED, GET WITH THE PROGRAM
tjc in NY was saying while he, himself is not a Wal-Mart fan, he is definitely not a fan of yourself and the rest of your “zoo crew”!
I read him loud and clear--I found it disturbing that a man of your credentials couldn’t grasp tjc’s message, or were you perhaps trying to twist some of his words to Wal-Mart Watch’s liking?
No way to Wal-Mart Watch in my town!

This Will Be the Last Time I Engage You
This will be the last time I acknowledge you… “No Way.” As I suggested to you in my post on page one, why don’t you go find yourself a brain before you engage your mouth?
I think Ken V was correct in his assessment of tjc… his/her messages were somewhat vague at best. You need a course in logic if you don’t understand that a double negative is the same as a positive. If someone is “not not for something,” then he’s really for that something. tjc said he was “anti anti” ergo… he is Pro Wal-Mart if he is “anti” the anti crowd. Either this, or tjc doesn’t know what side of the fence he’s on. Get it? Or do you need a picture drawn?
