WAL-MART’S PRICES NOT ALL THAT LOW IF YOU’RE POOR, BUYING BY WEIGHT OR IN THE PATH OF A HURRICANE

Three stories on Consumerist this week deal with Wal-Mart’s prices. None of them are particularly heart-warming.

Walmart Register Scales Off By As Much As 5 lbs [Consumerist]

Maybe there’s a localized outbreak of inaccurate grocery store scales happening in Kansas City, MO...Wal-Mart was the worst offender. According to state inspectors, one of their scales claimed items were 5 lbs heavier than they actually were. The Department of Weights and Measures shut the register down.

Central Florida TV News Accuses Walmart Of Price Gouging Poor People [Consumerist]

Local 6 news in Central Florida is accusing Walmart of setting their prices for sugar and other “staples” by demographic — charging more in stores where the population isn’t as wealthy as other neighborhoods...Congratulations, Central Florida. You’ve realized that Walmart’s pricing is shady and inconsistent.

Is Walmart Price-Gouging Hurricane Victims? [Consumerist]

A Walmart insider tells us that the price of cellphone chargers nearly doubled on orders from Walmart HQ in the wake of Hurricane Ike. Before the hurricane, chargers cost from $10-$15, but afterwards, they rose to a uniform $19...It could be a coincidence, maybe not. Either way, the timing is certainly suspicious.

After the jump, Wal-Mart Moms, exploding gas cans, and plastic bags all in this week’s round up of the Wal-Mart blogs.

WAL-MART MOMS TAKE CENTER STAGE

Fighting for the Wal-Mart Moms [Time’s Swampland Blog]

Pay no attention to those top-line numbers. The most interesting stat in the post-convention polling is the dramatic swing toward McCain of white women, a crucial demographic group that pollsters are watching very carefully. Obama has had trouble closing the sale here with one slice of this electorate in particular. They are older and less upscale than their predecessors, the soccer moms of 1996 and the security moms of 2004.

The South, Blogging & Wal-Mart Moms [WXYZ-TV Inter Active]

Williams’ Wal-Mart research indicates there are roughly 19 million undecided American voters and about 13 million of them, she claims, are Wal-Mart shoppers.  Will these “Wal-Mart moms” do for McCain or Obama what “soccer moms” did for President Bill Clinton in 1996 and what “security moms” did for President George W. Bush in 2004?  In a couple months, we’ll see if Wal-Mart as much influence in the political world as it does in the business world?

Wal-Mart Moms, Where Will They Go [PoliGazette]

And so they chose Sarah Palin as McCain’s running mate. Everything instantly changed. Suddenly white women had a candidate they could identify with, after Hillary Clinton. She was one of them; a mother (of five!), with her own career, trying to combine taking care of a family with earning a living.

One reader writes in to Marc Ambinder on the Atlantic about reports that Wal-Mart shoppers favor McCain over Obama:

I believe the simple explanation for this is demographics. There are no Wal-Marts in major metropolitan areas, and if they are, they are on the edges. And if the target of your poll, those who shop at Wal-Mart, excludes most people in metropolitan areas, the democrat is never going to lead that matchup. It’s like polling people who use subways and being surprised that McCain is trailing. They should stick to just looking at actual income levels.

Afropundit points out precisely why Wal-Mart’s support of “working class moms” is ironic, to say the least:

What is funny (and not ha-ha) about Walmart is that they are not really the best advocates for blue collar workers. With their dismal history on healthcare coverage and wages for its employees, Walmart is the last.

MOMformation thinks “Wal-Mart Moms” is already an outdated term, and cites Time magazine to back them up:

Last week I wrote about a group that looks to be very influential in the upcoming presidential election, the so-called Wal-Mart moms. While the Obama and McCain camps seem to be sticking with this name, Time magazine is referring to these women by a new label — the maxed-out moms.

WAL-MART ANNOUNCES PLAN TO IMPROVE REPUTATION BY ANNOUNCING PLAN TO CUT PLASTIC BAG USE

Wal-Mart May Remove 9 Million Plastic Bags from the Waste Stream - Big Whoop [Sustainablog]

When I read about Wal-Mart saying it will “potentially” cut its plastic bag usage by 1/3 by the year 2013, where I might normally say “good for them,” I’m saying, “big deal.” You might cut your plastic bag usage by 1/3 in five years. Big whoop.

Wal-Mart Goes on a Plastic Diet: 9 Million Plastic Bags to Be Eliminated From Waste Stream [Treehugger]

Another significant environmental commitment coming out of the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting comes from an seemingly unlikely paring: The Environmental Defense Fund and Wal-Mart...EDF will help Wal-Mart develop strategies for recycling, reusing and reducing the use of plastic bags in its stores by an average of one-third per store, from 2008 levels, by 2013.

MEANWHILE, EMPTY WAL-MART’S ACROSS THE COUNTRY SIT UNUSED

Worship at Walmart: what to do with an empty box [NRDC’s Switchboard Blog]

All across the country, communities have been struggling with what to do with their abandoned Walmarts.  Hundreds of the giant chain’s stores have now become decaying, empty big boxes parked on asphalt in one town after another.  In most cases, the company has simply moved farther out of town to Kingston, Ontario (by: Brave New Films, creative commons license)build and occupy a larger, more sprawling piece of automobile-dependent land.  A blog that follows the company has a whole archive just on this subject.

WAL-MART FACES YET ANOTHER PRODUCT RECALL DIFFICULTY.

Hmm...yeah, trying to stop selling gas cans which disfigure children IS a pretty pesky problem. From BloggingStocks:

what this is really about is Wal-Mart’s refusal to pull this product from its shelves, even after hard evidence that the offending product caused severe burns on a small boy who, admittedly, was using the gas can outside its intended use. Is that any excuse for being disfigured as a result of an explosion from a gas container? You be the judge.

I’ll tell you what to do with an empty Wal-Mart. MAKE WAL-MART TEAR IT DOWN!! In fact if they want to build a supercenter and leave empty their discount store--which is what they seem to be doing--don’t let them--UNTIL THE DISCOUNT STORE IS AN EMPTY LOT.
Communities who let Wal-Mart abandon their discount store and build a supercenter have only themselves to blame. Deny them their building permit for the supercenter--protest---rezone the property they want so they can’t use it--do something. BUT DON’T LET THEM BUILD AND LEAVE THEIR EMPTY STORE.
And it is my understanding that when the store is empty--Wal-Mart will not let a competing business take it. If you compete with Wal-Mart they won’t let you take over their old building.
This company doesn’t miss a trick--do they?

I doubt that anybody who has been concerned about the economic inequities and obvious inbalance, that have been so apparent the last 12 years or so, with the regards to the meteoric rise of our Nation’s “Wal*Mart Economy” is surprised by the financial catastrophie that is about to grip the United States. If you are surprised, then you haven’t been paying attention.

I would like to take my hat off to Wal*Mart Watch and all of the people arround the country who have been putting up “the good fight” for so long. In this painful time we should take some measure of comfort that the “Melt-Down” will bring more awareness to the people who have supported Wal*Mart as they have bulldozed our economy into a big parking lot. Now is not the time to dispair, now is the time to roll up our sleaves and double up our efforts. People like Warren Buffit are about to get their hands on a Trillion of our tax dollars. Don’t let these Wal*Mart lover’s perpetuate the Wal*Mart Economy. Keep vigilant that this bail-out doesn’t just make the boat sink faster and believe me it will if companies like Wal*Mart are continued to be held up and admired by the Corporate Governemt of the United States.

Keep you chins up and keep your eye’s on these traitorous SOB’s!

God Speed WMW!!! and to the Citizens of the USA!!!

Now is not the time to dispair...

Apparently not. I haven’t tried to borrow money but my credit card still works, I think. I don’t see any less TV ads for mortgages, reverse morgages, and any other credit instrument they can dream up.

Anyone reading this have any personal experience? Been turned down for a car loan? Any sign it’s working down to us?

OK, Bobby, I’ll keep my “chin up” for now. You will tell us when the time for dispair arrives, won’t you?

Hi Ken,
“There is no question about it. Wall Street got drunk. The question is, How long will it (take to) sober up and not try to do all these fancy financial instruments?” ~ G.W. Bush

Translation: They went Thatta-way!!!!!

They are passing a deffence bill for ~$700B plus a financial bailout bill for ~$700B both at about the same time. You and I may not feel it. Some will even benefit financially. But believe me somebody out there is going to feel it. Maybe not today, or even next week. Some people have been feeling it for a few years. I think your Bush quote is ironic.

I’m inclined to poetry - yet you are always in my face.

Walmart moms.

You must be as funny as me - for i am laughable.

When did a register ringing - become poor poeple voting;

Represented by 12 walmart moms;

Clinton’s old war room -

in cold climes -

rich or wealthy or upper middle class -

Become a voting block.

Tomorrow -

If Walmart starts to get too greedy -

And the prices don’t add up -

it is only trench-line workers - and shoppers - poor -

who truly know walmart.

That bird has flown folks.

You do not have - do not own - a voting block.

What you have is a platform of exposure.

simple as that.

Liars board.

Same people -

different venue.

Creators of nothing.

Who really cares about helping the poor & the Working Class.
Do the MATH! It doesn’t seem to be the Democrats here.

Biden Has Given Little to Charity

Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden has released his personal income tax records — revealing that the Delaware senator and his wife have been very stingy when it comes to charitable gifts.

The Bidens had an adjusted gross income of $319,853 in 2007, including his Senate salary, book royalties, and his wife’s salary as an English teacher. But their charitable gifts totaled $995 — just 0.31 percent of their income, according to the TaxProf Web site.

The year before, they earned $248,859 and donated just $380, or 0.15 percent of their adjusted gross income.

Over the past decade they reported giving an average of $369 a year to charity, Bloomberg.com reports.

According to Independent Sector, the average annual charitable donation among households earning in excess of $200,000 is $20,434.

The Bidens’ “lack of charitable giving at that level of income would definitely be outside the range of what we say is normal,” Russell James, a professor at the University of Georgia who conducts research on charitable giving, told Bloomberg.

Republican presidential nominee John McCain’s tax returns show he had an adjusted gross income of $386,527 last year and had charitable givings of $105,467, or 27.3 percent of income. His wife Cindy files separately.

His Democratic rival Barack Obama had $4.13 million in income in 2007 and gave $240,370, or 5.8 percent.

Here is an excerpt from Harper’s Magazine:~~~~~~~~~~~~” Barack Obama- and Hillary Clinton have received a fair amount of press scrutiny. The same is not true of John McCain, which is somewhat surprising since he is essentially the sole donor to the John and Cindy McCain Foundation, and his wife is its chairman and president.

Between 2001 and 2006, McCain contributed roughly $950,000 to the foundation. That accounted for all of its listed income other than for $100 that came from an anonymous donor. During that same period, the McCain foundation made contributions of roughly $1.6 million. More than $500,000 went to his kids’ private schools, most of which was donated when his children were attending those institutions. So McCain apparently received major tax deductions for supporting elite schools attended by his children.

McCain has net assets of between $20 million and $32 million, making him the seventh wealthiest member of the Senate. His wealth is tied to Cindy Hensley McCain, his second wife and heiress to Hensley & Co., a major Anheuser-Busch distributor.

Collectively, McCain’s kids’ private schools rank as the largest recipient of his foundation’s money. The largest individual recipient is the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, which received $210,000 in both 2001 and 2002. That money was earmarked for conferences that “bring together key military officers and civilian academics responsible for ethics education and character developments.”

The McCain Foundation also has given large amounts to medical causes of various kinds, with a focus on craniofacial research, and the Halo Trust, a landmine-clearing organization. Small amounts have gone to the Valley Youth Theatre ($200) in Phoenix; Cool our Troops ($500), which provides Misty Mates to troops in Iraq; the Child Crisis Center in Phoenix ($250), which provides emergency shelter and programs for abused kids; and the American Cancer Society’s Neighborhood Cancer Program ($50)..

I contacted McCain’s campaign to ask about the foundation’s contributions. A campaign spokesman, who asked to speak anonymously, said the foundation is funded nearly entirely by proceeds from McCain’s book sales.

It’s impossible to know how much McCain has saved in taxes through his foundation’s donations since he has thus far refused to release his tax returns (and won’t commit to releasing them after formally becoming the nominee either). It’s not exactly the pattern of giving you’d expect from someone who has cultivated an anti-elitist image.

I don’t know about anyone else, but as the seventh richest member of Congress,is this really the best the McCain’s can do? With hundreds of thousands going to tax write offs for HIS children’s schools? And $250.00 to ABUSED kids in Phoenix? Can YOU spell elitism,Senator McCain?

McCain Overstretches his Support of Veterans and Troops
by: Brian McGough
Sat Sep 27, 2008 at 00:05:21 AM EDT

In tonight’s debate John McCain said “I know the veterans, I know them well, and I know that they know that I’ll take care of them, and I have been proud of their support and their recognition of my service to the veterans, and I love them, and I’ll take care of them, and they know that I’ll take care of them.”
Truth be told, this is not the case.  McCain has a lackluster voting record when it comes to veterans’ issues, and America’s veterans know it.  The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America have given McCain a grade of “D” when it comes to voting in their interest.  The Disabled American Veterans have given McCain a 20 percent rating when it comes to voting in the interest of disabled veterans.

Brian McGough :: McCain Overstretches his Support of Veterans and Troops
McCain has voted 29 times against veterans’ medical benefits.  In April 2006, McCain joined only 13 other senators in voting against an amendment that would increase funding for the VA to provide outpatient care and treatment.  Earlier that year, McCain voted against increasing funding for military and veterans’ hospitals.  This was money that could have been used to fix the problems at Walter Reed before it became a national disgrace.
McCain was a staunch opponent of the bipartisan Webb/Hagel GI Bill.  This bill would have provided better educational opportunities to veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.  McCain called this bill “too generous” and tried to introduce his own watered down bill.  McCain didn’t even bother to show up to vote for the bill.  After it passed the two staunchest opponents of the GI Bill, President Bush and John McCain, tried to take credit for its passage.

McCain has an equally bad record when it comes to supporting our active duty soldiers.  McCain opposed the Webb/Hagel Dwell time amendment.  This amendment would have ensured that for every day troops were deployed, they would spend one day at home.  This time would have allowed troops to decompress from combat stress and to focus on maintaining the equipment necessary to fight a war.  Our troops and equipment are now dangerously overstretched.

McCain opposed the Bayh amendment that would have provided $360 million for the procurement of up-armored humvees at a time when roadside bombs were killing American troops.

McCain voted to kill the Reed Amendment. This amendment would have begun to increase the size of the active army in 2003 and focused on stability operations.

McCain voted against the Dodd amendment that would provide an additional $320 million in protective gear for our troops in harms way.

McCain also voted against a Landrieu amendment that would have given our National Guard and Reserve troops the equipment they needed to survive on the battlefield.

There is a distinct pattern in these votes, and that pattern shows that John McCain is no friend to veterans on Capitol Hill.  He may say all he wants that he is, but that doesn’t change the fact that he votes time and time again against the needs of veterans and active duty soldiers~~~~~~~~~VoteVets
