We’ll be extremely busy this weekend relaxing and celebrating the valiant efforts of American workers, so in the meantime - a brief round up of the week’s Wal-Mart blogs.

DEADLY BASSINETS SOLD AT WAL-MART

Wal-Mart Still Selling Dangerous Cribs [WakeUpWal-Mart.com Blog]

Wal-Mart has long been plagued with recalls of dangerous products, and it has often been implicated in taking too little action about such products. Now it seems Wal-Mart is still selling a dangerous crib that is responsible for two deaths.

CPSC uses new authority against defiant manufacturer of dangerous bassinets after another tragic death [U.S. PIRG blog]

Here is the story yesterday at Consumeraffairs.com. I hope Wal-Mart (mentioned in this story) and other retailers have stopped selling these products, since being notified of the imminent hazard warning. And I assure readers, if SFCA’s defense somehow prevails in court, that the Congress will be quick with a technical correction to the new law.

After the jump, Wal-Mart’s local food, more on the company’s mandatory meetings and the new Marketside stores.

WAL-MART UPS ITS GREEN APPEAL BY SELLING “LOCAL” FOOD

Wal-Mart marketing to locavores? [HBurg News]

There was a story on a recent Morning Edition about Wal-Mart moving in on farmers market territory. The company is attempting to change their image by trying to appeal to environmentalists and locavores by selling local produce in their Supercenters.

Businesses for Boomers: Organic Gardening for Locavores [Small Business Boomers]

Now that “organic” foods have gone corporate (you can find so-called organic foods in Wal-Mart), many of us are looking to local markets because:
* Locally grown food is fresher and tastier
* Local growers are more honestly “organic” (yes, that means I don’t trust Wal-Mart)
* Many of us want to support local businesses whenever we can.

Wal-Mart and local food [U.S. Food Policy]

Marc at Ethicurean calls Mal-Mart’s effort to maintain profits by saving on fuel costs a “less lofty” motivation, but the motivation doesn’t bother me. I get more frightened when the cut-throat retail competitor tries to pass for a charity in its feel-good advertising. Marc goes on to point out that only large low-cost regional farm operations, not your friendly farming neighbor, are likely to become Wal-Mart suppliers.

Local food at Walmart misses the whole point of the local food movement. [Writing on the Wal]

Under Walmart’s system, food from giant industrial farms in California can be sold as local. Technically it is, but that’s why you have to care as much about how your food is produced as from where it comes from if you really want to eat well...In short, local food is a marketing gimmick; one of a long line of marketing gimmicks at Walmart.

Diane on BlogHer attempts to reconcile some of the company’s contradictions:

As far as I’m concerned, Wal-Mart should be commended for making green choices available to its shoppers. Is it a contradiction that the store has such a huge environmental footprint itself? Of course, and consumers should continue to encourage the store to save energy—and maybe even build smaller stores—whenever possible.  But people should first and foremost focus on their own footprint.

WAL-MART PREPARES FOR LAUNCH OF NEW ‘MARKETSIDE’ STORES

Wal-Mart has high hopes for Marketside format [BloggingStocks]

A look at the Marketside website is illustrative of what Wal-Mart’s trying to do here: scanning around on the site, I can find exactly one reference to Wal-Mart, and even that one appears to be qualified: “Marketside is a small community grocery store owned by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.” In disclosing the ownership, Wal-Mart distances itself from its offspring.

Writing on the Wal weighs in on the fact that the new stores will not bear Wal-Mart’s name:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Walmart spending millions of dollars so that whenever Americans hear the name of the company we’ll think of sunshine, happiness and fluffy white bunnies? I guess that re-branding thing isn’t working out too well otherwise they wouldn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Wal-Mart Goes Stealth with Small-Box Stores [Minyanville]

The move away from massive big-box stores suggests many customers prefer to shop in more intimate surroundings closer to home, especially in view of rising gas prices. What’s interesting is their attempt to re-create the look and feel of a neighborhood store. The food retailers are betting that a significant number of people are willing to trade rock-bottom prices for good service and artfully displayed merchandise.

MORE ON WAL-MART’S MANDATORY MEETINGS AND THE EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT

The Wal-Mart Weekly: Violating federal election laws? [BloggingStocks]

For those that live in the “it’s a free country” mode most of the time, there may be nothing wrong with the largest and most powerful force in retailing to invite store managers from thousands of nationwide locations to a series of meetings where politics is the main topic. Those managers then take the sentiment back to their stores. So what? The balance of power in the federal government affects just about everything most Americans deal with every day: working conditions, taxes, gas prices, food prices, you name it.

Now if only....

If only you could be half as vigilent at keeping the “crapflooding” of posters such as Anonymous in USA off of this website as you are at starting your blog threads that are “half-baked,” poorly researched, and pretty much of a non-issue in the “bigger scheme of things” when it comes to Wal-Mart, Alex Goldschmidt.

This bassinet story is the latest example.

Six major retailers, including Toys “R” Us, K-Mart, Target, J.C. Penny, and yes Wal-Mart, started to pull Simplicity bassinets from their store shelves after Simplicity refused to recall the product.

Someone at WMW managed to delete “Anonymous’” posts once before.  Where are your priorities?  WMW should hire a good webmaster to oversee the daily functioning of its website, or else it should round up the nearest 14 year old kid it can find.

But I agree with you. If WMW wants to have an active, relevant comment section of their blog it’s going to take more than simply posting some rules.

On the other hand, if they don’t care, why don’t they just say so? I’m sure Writing on the Wal would welcome some ‘fresh blood’ comments.

Sorry to disappoint you.  What this means is that I’m asking the person or persons in charge of the WMW blog to “get their act together” and find an expedient way to delete the postings of spammers like yourself and “Anonymous in USA.” Or better yet, prevent them in the first place.

This is not to say that it isn’t sad that several children died because of a defective product.  It seems to me however, Simplicity is the most negligent party for refusing to recall their product.

What it means is that I’m tired of Alex Goldschmidt starting certain lame blog threads that are poorly thought out.  There’s no need to “stretch things” when it comes to Wal-Mart, as there is always plenty of good material.

Since the Media team seems to be enjoying an elongated Labor Day Holiday, I thought I’d post this:

Walmart’s (WMT) Next Stop On Way To World Domination: Southeast Asia

</i>The best times of US growth for Walmart (WMT) are behind them. Not only is the American consumer strapped, WMT is also running out of places to put Walmarts. But there’s still room overseas.

Next stop on the way to Walmart’s world domination? Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand all offer major growth potential.

In Q2, Walmart’s international sales grew 17% year-over-year, twice as fast as the domestic business (9%), and now accounts for about 25% of Walmart’s revenue. International growth will surely be the most significant driver for WMT in the future, but the strengthening dollar will cut into this growth rate. The weakening global economy will also likely act as a drag. All of which suggests that Walmart’s recent stock run may not have much farther to go.

Credit Suisse, for one, believes it’s time to start dialing down expectations:

Although the international business continues to expand its presence within Wal-Mart’s operations, a drop in inflation rates or a strengthening dollar coupled with more difficult comparisons in the second half of FY09 could start to hold down the accelerated pace in sales growth Wal-Mart has experienced during the 1st half of this year.</i>

In other words, the better the US economy gets the worse it will be for Wal-Mart.......OR

What’s good for Wal-Mart is BAD for America!

Ken V in Texas
Wednesday, September 03 at 09:24 AM

I have felt lately, that Wal-Mart’s sales increases have had a lot to do with the economy. If you need to save a buck naturally you go where the goods are cheap. But the minute the economy begins to recover, Wal-Mart will probably see a SALES DECLINE.  I think it all boils down to the fact that many people HAVE TO shop there--but they really don’t want to. You’re right Ken, the better the US economy gets, the worse it will be for Wal-Mart. And you’re right on another score--What’s good for Wal-Mart is bad for America!

If the Hanoi Hilton could not break John McCain’s resolve to do what is best for his country, you can be sure the angry left never will,” the president declared.

Lieberman followed — in person, not on a video screen — with an appeal to Democrats to transcend their party affiliation and vote for his friend McCain.

Using Bill Clinton to beat Obama
Lieberman even had the chutzpah to employ Bill Clinton in an attack on Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

It was the oddest spectacle of this night: a hall full of Republicans — the very people who had moved to impeach Clinton — applauding their old demon, but only in the cause of bashing Obama.

Video

Lieberman: ‘Country matters more than party’
Sept. 2: Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut explains to Republican delegates why he, a Democrat, is backing John McCain.
MSNBC

In the Senate, Lieberman said, Obama “has not reached across party lines to accomplish anything significant, nor has he been willing to take on powerful interest groups in the Democratic Party to get something done.”

He asked the audience to contrast that with McCain’s record.

“But let me go one further — and this may make history here at this Republican convention,” he added with a chuckle.

“Let me contrast Barack Obama’s record to the record of the last Democratic president, Bill Clinton, who stood up to some of those same Democratic interest groups, worked with Republicans and got some important things done like welfare reform, free trade agreements, and a balanced budget,” Lieberman said.

Later Lieberman added it did not matter if you were “a Reagan Democrat, a Clinton Democrat, or just a plain old Democrat,” you should vote for the Arizona Republican.

“McCain wasn’t willing to “reach across party lines” and pick Lieberman as his running mate either.  Pretty ironic, don’t you think?”

What is even MORE ironic, is the fact that Joe Lieberman spoke at the Republican Convention, URGING Democrats to ‘vote’ for McCain as the ‘better’ choice for President, even though he WASN’T picked as a running mate!!

Yeah, Yeah, We Get it Already....McCain is a War Hero!

After tolerating the John McCain “Love Fest,” otherwise known as “Bash Obama Night,” otherwise known as the Republican National Convention, I still didn’t hear the answer to my question.

None of the keynote speakers so far, including Fred Thompson, Mike Huckabee, Rudy Giuliani, and the lady of the evening, Sarah Palin, provided the answer.

Why did we fight the Vietnam War?

Perhaps John McCain will tell us tomorrow night.  Perhaps he’ll tell us why he believes the Vietnam War was a “victory” for America.  Don’t hold your breath folks!

In the meantime, maybe Larry in USN WWII (Ret) has the answer.

And its 1, 2, 3, 4 what are we fight’in for?  Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn. Next stop is Vietnam. ~Country Joe and the Fish

Was there ever a war, that you feel was worth fighting?  Was WWII worth fighting?  After all, Hitler didn’t do anything against the U.S.!!

...can change an attitude, Kenbo…

Do you suppose it would work on you, bb?

I’m not minimizing McCain’s suffering, but if he hadn’t gotten ‘shot down’, it would not have been necessary.

John Sidney McCain III is known among many of his Vietnam flight buddies as “Ace” McCain. This title has not been bestowed upon McCain because he destroyed five enemy aircraft. On the contrary: It was five on our side—in fact, five of his own. Since throwing his hat into the presidential ring, the fact that McCain was graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy nearly at the bottom of his class has been publicized. His star-crossed flying, on the other hand, remains unknown to most.

You can tell he’s an ‘ACE”, it says so on his comb.

The instructor added that McCain was “positively one of the weakest students to pass our way, and received consistently poor marks and a number of Dangerous Down grades assigned by more than one instructor. He had no real ability and was clearly out of his element in an airplane, and way over his head even as a junior naval officer.”

My advice to John McCain: Don’t fly over enemy territory!

In his extensive article on John McCain, entitled “The War Secrets Senator John McCain Hides....Former POW Fights Public Access to POW/MIA files”, Sydney Schanberg, a Pulitzer prize winner in 1974, asks why John McCain of the Straight Talk express had declared one biogaphical subject “off limits”. In fact McCain has fought an “anti-disclosure” campaign against attemtps to explore all Pentagon debriefings of his return from Vietnam.

Another issue is the number of POWs released after the Paris Peace Accords in 1973. Nixon proclaimed that the 591 prisoners released were all Americans held by the Vietnamese. However, hundreds more have not been accounted for. McCain pushed legislation which has made it impossible to track those prisoners.~~~~~~~The website Vietnam Vets Against John McCain has the ENTIRE article,in addition to numerous ,other well researched and written articles and discussions . It is well worth a trip to read some of the views of fellow Vietnam vets and correspondents -those who have been there and done that, too, and are more equipped to evaluate than some of us here.
