Sellers and Dudley on Grist: Adam Werbach Abandons Principles To Work For Wal-Mart
From Grist Magazine:
In late 2004, Adam Werbach proclaimed that environmentalism was dead due to the movement’s unwillingness to connect with ordinary working people and its inability to effectively grapple with the most profound problem the earth has ever faced, climate change. His diagnosis was clear: In order to build the next liberal majority in this country, environmentalists must create bold new “frames” that will unite us with our working-class brothers and sisters around “shared values.”
Werbach argued that to win we must begin by challenging our most basic assumptions. “What if we stopped defining global warming as an environmental problem and instead spoke of the economic opportunities it will create?” he asked. It’s this kind of out-of-the-box thinking that has landed Werbach a new gig in Big-Box Land.

So, wait! You’re telling me that we SHOULDN’T destroy the Earth for short-term goals and greed?! No kidding. I’m shocked that it’s taking people this long to figure that out. Hopefully it isn’t going to be a case of “Too little, too late”. As much as Wal-Mart is criticized, at least they’re stepping up to the plate with their environmental program. Is it for selfish purposes? Yup. But who cares, if there’s a dollar to be made, than business will start getting involved. Supply and demand. People are also just starting to realize that you shouldn’t eat poisonous food, either (which also destroys the Earth), and that’s why there’s a new surge of interest in organics, as well.

Yes, Generic. Wal-Mart’s environmental efforts should be applauded. I still don’t understand why everyone keeps saying they doubt Wal-Mart will follow through. They are doing this for their own selfish interests after all.
You must be especially happy that Wal-Mart is going organic. Now you can save money on the foods you complained were so expensive.

Actually, yes, I am happy that I can buy organic foods there now. However, I am concerned about the long-term effects that this might have on organic foods and the rules and guidelines for their production. I am also concerned about how this will impact small farmers.
