Hardball: John Edwards on Wal-Mart

John Edwards discussed Wal-Mart, poverty and health care last night on MSNBC’s Hardball.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Welcome back to Hardball. The College Tour is here in Chapel Hill, the southern part of heaven. I love this place. I went to grad school here, but our special guest is Senator John Edwards. You live around here, right?

JOHN EDWARDS: I do, not far from here.

MATTHEWS: It’s so great. You know, I want to ask you about poverty in America and what strikes me, not just the real destitute cases, but the towns in America, the town like you grew up in. You travel across the Midwest of the United States, you go through places like Spencerville, Ohio, Michigan City, Indiana and nothing is left but the Blockbuster and maybe a diner.

EDWARDS: Right. Right.

MATTHEWS: They’re deindustrialized, nobody’s got a job, the kids leave. Is this Wal-Mart doing this? Who’s doing this? There’s no downtowns. There’s no gift shop. All this stuff is now at Wal-Marts now. Is—I know I’m feeding you here, but I really want to know. Are you ready to say that Wal-Mart has hurt America?

EDWARDS: I think the honest answer to that question—I know what—the best answer politically to say. I think the honest answer is, it’s complicated. I think Wal-Mart does something good. They provide low cost goods to people who badly need them. That’s a good thing.

MATTHEWS: Right.

EDWARDS: There are others like Costco who do the same thing and they pay their employees well and they give health care coverage. I think what my concern is about Wal-Mart, and a lot of people’s concern is, what they do to the kind of communities you are talking about; and secondly, that so many of their employees and their children are dependent on taxpayer money to get the health care that they need or to get any kind of peace in life.

MATTHEWS: How does that work?

EDWARDS: Well, basically, they’re dependent on Medicaid.

MATTHEWS: So they impoverish themselves.

EDWARDS: Almost have the children of Wal-Mart employees get their health care from Medicaid. Taxpayers, the American people, are paying for that. And they shouldn’t be subsidizing—you know, there are some very well to do people who own a lot of Wal-Mart stock, the people who started Wal-Mart, and that’s part of the American story. There’s nothing wrong with that, but they shouldn’t be doing on the backs of taxpayers.

I mostly vote republican but I do think it is time for a change in government. I may or may not vote for the party in 2008.
Health Care is a huge issue that affects everyone. I am sure it will be on the agenda of every candidate.

What I do know about John Edwards is that he is a wealthy lawyer. How did he make his millions? Easy, off the misfortunes of others, suing health care professionals and institutions.

The way I look at it, he is part of the cause of the rising cost of health care and insurance. So when he points his finger at Wal-Mart and complains he really needs to include himself as part of the problem.

And Dave, I do not support communism. Because I have compassion for poor people in third world and communist countries does not mean I support communism. I will gladly stand up and fight for this country. I spent 9 years in the military here and abroad.

While I do applaud you service to this country, The fact remains that your support of the unfair trade practices DOES, in fact, support communism. The weakening of this countrys middle class, strengthens communism. The truth is, that the business, and the right wing, have NEVER had compassion for the poor in this, or any country for that matter. Our jobs are being sent there, but our working conditions ARE NOT! All this COMPASSION is nothing more than a SMOKE SCREEN for the exploitation of the poor, and thats the TRUTH!!!!!!!

As for John Edwards, he grew up in a middle class family. Worked his way through law school and is now a succsesful lawyer. Most of the distaste for lawyers is well deserved, but at the same time if you were injured and you lost everything because of someone elses negligence I think that you would be on the phone to an attorney so fast it would make your head spin. I think if you are honest you would agree. so just because he makes a living helping people that have been injured doesn’t make him a bad person. And lets face it most of the rising costs are due to bad investments with World Com, ENRON, ECT. by the insurance and now they are recouping their losses from us. Lets call a spade a spade.

That’s a new one: the rising cost of health care is caused by bad investments in the stock market. Well, the stock market has done pretty well this year - the Dow hit an all-time high, does that mean health costs hit an all time low.  Hilarious!!!

So What you are saying is that just because they have recapped their losses they are going to suddenly reduce their insurance prices now to what it was before the ENRON, WORLD COM problems. Are you saying that they didn’t lose millions apon millions in the stock market? Then it was just a coincidence that their premiums took a huge hike right after that. Hummmmmm. Your naivete is Hilarious!!!

It’s tough to take you seriously - you have history of making up facts like when you said Rumsfield called unions ‘terrorist organizations, PGE was owned by Enron, wages decrease in right to work state etc.

Maybe you should call Congress tell them your found the source of the nations rising health care costs: Enron and Worldcom have caused the health crisis!!!  Can you point to single article that even remotely supports this view. Can you link a website which shows a ‘huge hike’ in health care premiums right after the Enron and Woldcom scandals.

Keep making up facts Dave. Its good for a laugh

“We should pray that John Edwards is our next PRESIDENT!”

Is this another one of your jokes?  John “Ambulance Chaser” Edwards as President.  That’s hilarious.  How can you take this guy seriously?  He’s one of the biggest phonies I have ever seen.  He is a complete hypocrite when it comes to the Wal-Mart issue.  Please refer to the December 4 blog entry “Walmart Girds for Showdown” and this time try clicking on the link and reading the whole article.  The end of the article tells of a book signing Edwards did in a Barnes and Nobles.  The Wal-Mart in that particular town has a starting pay hight than the Barnes and Nobles Edwards did the signing at.  Yes, thats right folks, John “Ambulance Chaser” Edwards supported a store that treats its workers worse in starting pay than Wal-Mart.  Why then doesn’t this hypocrite rail against Barnes and Nobles?  He doesn’t because it isn’t the popular thing to do.  Liberals, all want to jump on the beat on Wal-Mart bandwagon, while making complete fools and hypocrites of themselves.

I can’t believe you would honestly try to defend his profession.  He is an AMBULANCE CHASER.  That is the lowest sleaziest form of law there is.  People like John “Ambulance Chaser” Edwards have forced many good doctors to close up shop because of their skyrocketing insurance costs due to frivolous lawsuits.  This country could really use some tort reform but you won’t get that from John “Ambulance Chaser” Edwards.  Your theory on increased healthcare costs is you funniest conspiracy/crackpot theory yet.  This beats your Coca-Cola debacle.  Explain to me why health care costs had been shooting up way before the corporate scandals you mentioned.  This is a trend that has been ongoing.  I’m sure you won’t need to be burden by any pesky facts while trying to explain this.

I worked in a Wal-Mart part time. I was assaulted by a customer, told by management that calling the police was not an option because “We Cannot Afford To Lose Customers”..I worked off the clock and filled out time ajustment sheets, but was never paid.. I was assaulted by a co-worker and management did nothing. Our Department Manager ,Holly , took returned items (cameras) and “REPAIRED THEM” and returned them to the display case for sale again. She took some camera appart but did not repair them.

Tony,

In case you haven’t noticed yet, Dave has a habit of taking what was said, twists it to fit his agenda, then spins it out of shape and spits it back at you with things you never said, meant or even thought of.  He has his own little world he lives in, where everything is bad, except his point of view.  If a fact gets in his way, he just makes it into what fits into his world and jumps all over it.  Experts, haven’t a clue in his world, he is way more knowledgable than they are.

He loves his union, yet has never attended a meeting and still somehow knows what is going on all the time.  He claims that ‘Right to work’ states have diminishing wages and benefits, yet, Arkansas is a ‘Right to work’ state and their economy is getting better all the time, while, Michigan, is a big union state and people are losing their jobs left and right and their economy is going down the tubes.  I sometimes wonder, if he even really knows what the union does!!  For all he knows, he says he is getting $23.00 an hour for his job, but the national average for that type of work might be $45.00 an hour.

Karl,

You must have a poor personallity and attitude, that for some reason, the customers and associates are assaulting you.

Ditto, quess where that came from.  I have been a republican and conservative for a very long time, however I can no longer support their agenda.  I believe there is more blame to go around as to why the health care system is out of control.  Sure lawyers are a part of it, but I believe there are many other things that contribute such as doctors, hospitals, generous government plans, and individuals themselves go to the doctor for the least little ailment.
I too am a veteran who served abroad during the vietnam era.  For the past 55 years communist china has been our adversary and now all of a sudden our country has allowed corporations to send our resources, technology and manufacturing jobs to China.  Corporations such as Walmart have been one of the leaders in this outsourcing.  If the giant sucking sound of jobs going to China are slowed down, it will not be the Republicans who stop it. There is the same problem with health insurance, health care will continue to be available for the very poor and very rich.  So you see the present administration, supporting large corporations, has written off the middle class, their jobs are going to China and no health insurance for the middle class..  Who else do we have except the Democrats.
I grit my teeth as I say that.

Articles of Impeachment for
President George W. Bush and
Vice President Richard B. Cheney
for high crimes and misdemeanors.
[Last updated November 8, 2006.]
Resolved, that President George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors, and that the following articles of impeachment be exhibited to the United States Senate:

Articles of impeachment exhibited by the House of Representatives of the United States of America in the name of itself and of the people of the United States of America, in maintenance and support of its impeachment against President George W. Bush and his team for high crimes and misdemeanors.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Article I
In his conduct while President of the United States, George W. Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has conspired to exceed his constitutional authority to wage war, in that:
On March 19, 2003, George W. Bush invaded the sovereign country of Iraq in direct defiance of the United Nations Security Council. This constitutes a violation of Chapter 1, Article 2 of the United Nations Charter and a violation of Principal VI of the Nuremberg Charter. According to Article VI of the United States Constitution “This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land;”. George W. Bush has thus acted in violation of the supreme Law of the Land by the following acts:

Invading Iraq with United States military forces.
Sacrificing the lives of thousands of American troops.
Killing tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians and conscripts.
Rejecting possibilities for peaceful resolution of the conflict by rejecting acts of compliance by Saddam Hussein with the United Nations Resolutions, and ignoring the findings by Hans Blix that inspections were working to disarm Iraq.
Violating the Geneva Convention by abducting and transporting human beings to prisons in foreign countries where they can be tortured and subjected to inhumane treatment.
Article II
In his conduct while President of the United States, George W. Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has subverted the principles of democracy, by the following acts:
Providing misinformation to the United Nations Security Council, Congress, and the American people overstating the offensive capabilities of Iraq, including weapons of mass destruction, as justification for military action against Iraq.
Repeatedly manipulating the sentiments of the American people by erroneously linking Iraq with the terrorist attacks of September 11th by Al-Qaeda.
Repeatedly claiming that satellite photos of sites in Iraq depicted factories for weapons of mass destruction in contradiction with the results of ground inspections by United Nations teams.
Stating that “Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa” in his State of the Union Address after being told by the CIA that this was untrue and that the supporting documents were forged.
Influencing, manipulating and distorting intelligence related to Iraq with the intention of using that intelligence to support his goal of invading Iraq.
Repeatedly ordering the NSA to place illegal wiretaps on American citizens without a court order from FISA.
Retaliating against whistle-blowers who try to point out errors in statements made by President Bush.
Directing millions of dollars in government funds to companies associated with White House officials in no-bid contracts that pose serious conflicts of interest. One example is Halliburton, of which Richard Cheney was once CEO.

Theres more.......

Article III
In his conduct while President of the United States, George W. Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has threatened the security of the American people, by the following acts:
Diverting military resources from pursuing known terrorists such as Osama Bin Laden who have repeatedly attacked the United States of America.
Generating ill will among the peoples of the world with an offensive and aggressive foreign policy.
Weakening the effects of International Law by defying the United Nations thus encouraging other nations to violate International law by example.
Diverting the National Guard to foreign wars where they are unavailable to serve the needs of American citizens at home who, for example, are suffering from Hurricane Katrina.
Appointing unqualified personnel to critical government positions as political favors where their incompetence places American citizens at risk. An example being the appointment of Mike Brown as head of FEMA.
Proposing military strategies involving the first use of tactical or low yield nuclear weapons in violation of the Nonproliferation Treaty, which is an inherently destabilizing strategy that encourages participants in a conflict to strike before the other side can do so.
Wherefore, George Bush, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust or profit under the United States.

Of corse this is only the tip of the ice berg. If all of the crimes against this and other countrys around the world were all listesd they would fill a book.

Gosh Davie you got me,

“You support a man like Bush”

Show me where I have ever said I support Bush.  Come on Davie show me, show me.

“I’ll bet that you supported Clintons impeachment and that was for lying about a blow job”

Actually Davie, Clinton was impeached for lying under oath not for lying about a blow job.  There is a difference.  Your ignorance is kind of endearing.

Thanks for doing all my hard work for me.  I don’t really need to spend much time on your “Articles of impeachment”.  Your source says it all.  You constantly insist on linking very left wing/whack job websites and publications.  While you may agreee with these you will never convince anyone but the other Kool-Aid drinkers of your position.  These sources are highly biased to the left and many of them are supported by people like George Soros.  You are recieving a lop sided view of any topic in these sources.  When trying to piece together an argument evidence should come from a diversity of sources and opinions.  Listing 100 highly left wing sources doesn’t cut it.  Anyway, about your “Articles of Impeachment”, half of them are arm chair quarterbacking.  If things had went well half of those wouldn’t be there.  Any fool, even you Davie, can second guess someones every decision .  Yes, many of those decisions will be wrong but as they say hindsight is 20/20.  Also, most of those would be next to impossible to prove but thats just my opinion.  I don’t have all night to spend going through your whole list.  It gets really tiresome.  On to more fun.

“a good man like John Edwards”

That’s the funniest line I’ve read from you since yesterday.  How do you know he’s a good man?  Have you ever met him?  Do you go out for beers together?  He could beat his wife for all you know.  Just because he has a million watt smile does that make him good?  Yelling about how bad Wal-Mart is while at stores who pay their employees less, does that make him good or just a hypocrite?  Anyway, please define what a “good man” is thats a pretty broad term.  Many would call Jesus a good man.  Is John Edwards on par with Jesus?  Huh Davie, huh?

Just for the record I never called him a bad man in my earlier post.

You folks are hilarious, sniping at each other like schoolchildren.

Listen: whatever your political leanings, when you live in a society with other people you have to accept a basic level of interdependency and responsibility for one another.  Without that, there is no society.

In other words, if you see one of your neighbors harming another of your neighbors and you fail to stop him, you are complicit in the harm that has been done.

Folks, this concept has been in the Bible for almost six thousand years. (cf. Leviticus 19:17)

The same concept applies to our corporate neighbors as well.  If we support a company (by patronizing or investing in it) that is doing harm to our neighbors (in our community or abroad), the dollars that we contribute are funding the harm that is being done.  By “suffering sin upon our neighbor”, it is as if we ourselves are committing the sin.

John Edwards is not my favorite politician.  But I do respect him for having the courage, that few other politicans have, to speak truth to power.  Yes, it is overly simplistic to paint Wal-Mart as a big, evil corporation out to destroy the American worker.  At the same, time, though, we have to recognize that when the world’s largest private employer (in contrast to Barnes and Noble) is reporting consistent profits while shunting many workers onto the public dole (it is widely reported that Wal-Mart regularly trains employees on how to fill out public medical assistence forms), they are in effect stealing from us, the tax-paying American public.  Moreover, when their agressive business practices contribute to small business closings and widespread poverty in towns across America, we must recognize that Wal-Mart is harming our neighbors as surely as if they had snatched the bread from out of their mouths.  And if we stand idly by and let them do so, we are at best bad neighbors, at worst traitors to our country and sinners before the Almighty.

Does he really speak truth to power or his he just whipping up a certain segment of his voter base?  His position is a calculated move to win votes.  Come on he’s a politician he’s always working an angle.  I see it as being no different than the Republicans stirring up their evangelical base.  He goes out bashes Wal-Mart a little bit and will hopefully get most of the anti-Wal-Mart crowd.  I will give him credit for being politically savy enough to jump on this bandwagon early.  Watch out though Obama is trying to hop on too.

The problem was not about what he lied about, but, rather that he lied under oath to a Grand Jury, while he was in the position of being the Attorney General’s boss!!  That is known as “Perjury”, which is a crime!!  And, the head of the Justice Dept., shouldn’t be committing crimes!!

Tony,

“You can find anything on the Internet including articles claim Coke kills thousands of people each year! Dave, aliens landed in Roswell, JFK shot himself, and black helicopters are flying over my house. Are there any other conspiracy websites you could recommend to us.”

Didn’t you know, that JFK and Elvis, are running a ‘bait and tackle’ shop down in South America?

Raphael,

“At the same, time, though, we have to recognize that when the world’s largest private employer (in contrast to Barnes and Noble) is reporting consistent profits while shunting many workers onto the public dole”

Why is it that it is wrong for a “Big” employer to do something, but, not so bad, for a “Small” employer to do the same thing?  Does anyone here really believe that the “mom & pop” stores pay ‘living wages’ and provide ‘good’ benefits and affordable health insurance?  How many TARGET employees are on the public dole?  And, lastly, what does consistant profits of a company, have to do with which public assistance programs their employees are on?  If some of their employees get ‘food stamps’, does that mean Wal-Mart should be passing out ‘Free’ food to their employees?  If some are getting ‘rent assistance’, does that mean that Wal-Mart should be paying an employees rent for them?  How much of an employees life, is a company responsible for and how much is the employees responsibility?  Do employees work for the company or are they like children, who require all of their needs fulfilled by their employer?

Raphael,

You make some good points. You’ll have to ignore the willful ignorance of the Bitter Old Men on this blog, people who really refuse to seek any common ground.

I encourage you to continue to express your humanistic and thoughtful opinions here and in your local community.

South Side,

“You’ll have to ignore the willful ignorance of the Bitter Old Men on this blog, people who really refuse to seek any common ground.”

This comment, reminds me of my children, when they were in their teens, when they said, “Dad, you don’t understand what it’s like being a kid!!”.  They have a hard time understanding that I was once a kid and do understand, but, now as an adult, I have a different perspective on things!!  I now know that ‘this and that’ may not be the right thing to do!!  I used to think that it was fun, getting drunk and driving real fast, I now know thats not a good idea.  Sadly, not all people learn these life lessons and that is why we have people getting DWI’s and killing people, so, I would argue against making drunk driving legal, does that make me a “Bitter Old Man”?!!

Actually, the New York Times isn’t as credible as it once was thanks to Jason Blair and their treatment of Judith Miller.  Their credibility is shot now.

Why do you keep insisting that universities banning Coke is proof of wrong doing.  Major universities have been manipulated and strong armed by far left student groups since the 60’s.  It is no surprise far left students can sway school administration, because universities are made of a majority of liberals.  Several surveys have been done to show the political leanings college professors.  Liberals out number conservatives by a large margin.  Thats just the fact.  Also, you have the view that universities are great bastions of free thought and free speech.  They are not just ask any campus Republican group trying to have an affirmitave action bake sale.  Their rights to free speech are infringed by these left leaning administration officials and professors.  Apparently, at major universities free speech only applies if the administration agrees with you.

By the way the article you linked to is out of date.  U of Michigan is once again buying products from Coca-Cola.  Please keep your research up to date Davie.

My nieces and nephews call me uncle Davie, so thinking that calling me Davie, bothers me is a mistake. To tell the truth I rather like it.

I’m rather enjoying that all you can do is hope I’m mad. Changing the subject to divert attention from the beat downs you’ve been recieving here lately. It isn’t working Davie.

No, Boob, it’s simpler than that. Being a bitter old man makes you a Bitter Old Man. Inserting yourself into everyone’s discussions in a plea for attention makes you a sad old man. But anyway, I’m glad you’ve internalized my critique to the point that you knew I was talking about you without me having to mention your name. And we’ve been dating for such a short time! How sweet.

Still not taking my advice, huh? Cut down on the blogging and get some fresh air. Maybe switch to herbal tea. Maybe take up yoga...stretch those creaky old limbs.

“I used to think that it was fun, getting drunk and driving real fast.”

What an idiot!

Anyway, if anyone wants to exchange ideas about the role of corporations in society or talk about how their communities are changing (for better or worse), I’d be interested in hearing from you.
