Help Support The Shank Family

Today Wal-Mart Watch officially launches its fundraising drive for former Wal-Mart employee Deborah Shank and her family, and pledges to match all funds raised dollar-for-dollar. Click here to do what Wal-Mart won’t and support the Shanks.

“Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott’s decision to take away the money that Mrs. Shank would use for her medical expenses represents the kind of failure of moral leadership that we have sadly come to expect from him,” said David Nassar, Wal-Mart Watch Executive Director.  “The Shanks are a hard-working American family - the kind that Lee Scott currently claims Wal-Mart helps to ‘save money and live better.’ Unfortunately, the Shank family is doing neither.”

I’m glad to see her getting some help.  It’s only ashame that her lawyers did her a disservice and that WMW continues to make this out to be a “Walmart” story when it’s SO far from the truth.

It is sad to see how much american workers have been pulled downed by walmart. If this company makes it another five years we may look more like China’s workforce than everbefore. Were are the labor leaders of the past?

Subrogration - it’s interesting that when you google subrogation none of the definitions (like from Law.com or wikipedia) mention that it allows the employer to sue the employee to recapture the funds.  All of the examples they use have the employer suing the party who did the injury!

I think changing the Wikipedia definition of Subrogration to include Walmart Watch and the Deborah Shank case would be a good project for one of your organizers.

And perhaps appealing to Law.com to change their definition would be a good thing, too.

Just when you think that Walmart couldn’t possibly be more evil....then they victimize Deborah Shank and her family.

Last time I checked Matt buddy this site was called Walmartwatch.  I’m sure if you do a search you might be able to find a CostcoWatch or TargetWatch.  And if not then you should fee free to start you own site to promote Walmart and blast these other stores you feel are so evil.  You can do free groups on social network sites like Facebook and Myspace.

Then once you do we can all come on over to your site:)

Matt: You did say you were a dues paying, union member, right? Why not get a return on your investment, and try to work within the union to better the conditions for all their members? It would seem the time and energy that you spend on defending WalMart, (whom you say you have no financial interest in), hasn’t helped your personal or professional situation ,from the tone of your comments.

i am a union member and make good wages.that does not mean i agree with all their policies and tactics.i know unions lie all the time on walmart and politics i see through them.i just wish more labor unions instead of badmouth walmart all the time like the ufcw they would fight harder to get more folks full time work and off the food stamp and welfare doles at their grocery stores and get them living wages and better benefits.

Matt: That sounds like a plan-why don’t You express your concerns on your union’s blogs-do they have one? Why not organize from within your union to help your union brothers and sisiters, instead of helping WalMart-would’nt that be a better use for your time and energy-take your grievances to the source?Just a suggestion.

ddrb i have numerous times expressed my views in letters and e mails to the ufcw.they wont listen.they area pile of crap union.i am dumfounded why you buy all their bs on walmart especially when they tell their members at the bottom end of the wage scale to always accept shitty contracts with paltry to no wage increases.thats why there is prevalent poverty wages in union grocery and they have so many on the food stamp and welfare doles.folks make poverty wages and cant get enough money and hrs to get decent benefits.

matthew vantress in gresham oregon
Wednesday, December 05 at 06:29 AM

Actually Matthew, and I think I’ve posted this before, my info is from a very reliable source.  I happen to know someone who is a screener for for O.H.P(Oregon Health Plan) and Food stamps for the state of Oregon.  He has told me that out of all his working applicants the largest percentage from a single Employer just happen to work at Walmart.

So it goes to say that the statistics from those studies are true at least in this state and more than likely in many other states as well.  Sorry Matt, you’ve been proven wrong again.  Going to have to back up WM Sucks on this one too!

I for one happen to think we need some type of Universal Healthcare in this country.  What we have simply isn’t working.  But I think any plan that is put in place should penalize big corporations that don’t provide affordable health plan coverage for their employees.  That way they could use that money to help fund the plan.

corgi i happen to know someone my sister in law who works for the state of oregon and your info you got from the screener is not correct.there are more folks from ufcw union grocers and other retailers on the oregon health plan according to my sister in law who is a very honest reliable person than walmart workers because of poverty level wages and not enough hrs to qualify for halfway respectable benefits. so corgi you argument has been debunked. corgi why not penalize target, union grocers and other retailers who have poor benefits?universal healthcare is a trainwreck waiting to happen.why universal healthcare?so we can get free healthcare for all the illegal mexicans and their excessive amounts of kids?no way

matthew vantress in gresham oregon

Matt, your wrong again.  Read her post again.  CSM was stating WM as a single employer in Oregon has more employees on assistance than any other ONE retailer.  Your sis-in-law lumping in all the Union Grocers and other Retailers isn’t a fair comparison.  Think about it, how many separate businesses is that!  A dozen at least.  WOW, we should be impressed that it takes that many businesses to compete with WM for employees on welfare?  Now go back and check your facts on each individual retailer and then get back to us.  You haven’t debunked anything buddy!

And I find it Ironic that you would bitch about illegal immigrants.  Most stores including your precious Walmart sell produce picked by those illegals.  Have a feeling if they deported them all you would be bitching about the price of fruit and vegetables going up the next day.  Can’t have it both ways.  And remember your guy in the Whitehouse would love to grant amnesty to them all so his big-wig corporate buddies can continue to profit off their exploitation!

Here are some stats from Arizona:

Workers on AHCCCS

● Top retailers in Arizona based on work force size and the percentage of workers on AHCCCS:

1. Wal-Mart: 9.6%

2. Bashas’: 5.3%

3. Kroger: 5.3%

4. Albertsons: 2.3%

5. Home Depot: 2.6%

6. Target: 5.4%

7. Safeway: 4.9%

8. Walgreens: 4.3%

Sources: Department of Economic Security; employment numbers used to compute percentages for Wal-Mart from company officials; other employment figures from 2005 Arizona Republic list of top state employers.

Now get to work Matt and find us the stats that show one retailer in Oregon that ranks #1 above Walmart for numbers of employees on assistance.  You claim your sis-in-law works for the state so it should be easy for you to get this info.

I was curious and did some more research and either Oregon doesn’t currently track this info or doesn’t make it readily available to the public.  But from what I have found there are 23 states that have done studies on Employers Whose Workers and Their Dependents are Using State Health Insurance Programs.  Guess what Matt, out of these 19 of those states list Walmart as number one.  And they get the number two spot in others.

yes it is sucks my sis in law knows her stuff unlike all you brainwashed by the govt and unions clones on here my sis in law pal handles paperwork to sign people up for food stamp and welfare benefits and sorry wm is not at the top of the list and is not even close to the top..its union grocery workers and other retail stores that pay crappy wages and benefits like kroger.it is a very fair comparison sir..you posted one state pal that dont prove squat.show me all the other 49 states because i looked it up and sorry walmart is not at the top or near the top in any of the others.its union grocery company workers and other retailers.other retailers like target, union grocers ,and etc across america hire illegal aliens sucks.i wonder why you are so quiet on that and have nothing to say on that but you bitch about wm doing it?makes you sound like a total ass there and shoots your credibility down.i dont care what site this is either.sucks americans dont get toillegally go to mexico and break their laws and get away with it down there without ending up in jail with all the crap the illegal aliens sorry i aint calling them immigrants either pull over here an get away with.most of these fruit pickers sorry bud are extremely lazy and dont work half as hard as they are portrayed.their are plenty of americans that will pick fruit.so what if the price goes up for fruit send them all home if they cant follow our laws in coming here.mexico dont let illegal americans get away with the same stuff down there without throwing our butt in jail why should we let them do it over here.quit feeling sorry for them because you would not have any sympathy for illegal americans who went to mexico and did the same thing and ended up in jail or prison down there.

Matt in : Would you ever accept food stamps?

ddrb in
Sunday, December 09 at 02:24 PM

You are right Walmart Sucks, not all states including Oregon currently track this info.  That is why legislation in several states is currently trying to pass bills that will require big corporations like Walmart to report how many workers they have on state assistance programs.

My friend who works as a screener for the state of Oregon has observed more applicants/recipients from a Single retailer to be employed by Walmart.  He knows this to be the case in Eastern Oregon and from talking to other screeners from across the state has been told this is the case in many other towns.  And I should point out that this friend of mine happens to shop at Walmart which would make it seem odd for him to make this up.

So therefore one would assume that the statistics found in the other states would also be true of Oregon.  But you are right if you added up all the other retailers and grocery stores in the whole state of Oregon than their numbers would be far greater.  But that wasn’t the point I was trying to make.  As always MV is trying to lump all the others together in a rather pointless attempt to make WM come out on top.

But he has to ask himself, why then would Walmart be trying to fight the bills making it mandatory to report this information?  If they are so squeaky clean, why would they be trying to hide this information from the public?

Hey CSM, if you do a google search you will see Matt has been a busy boy on many sites defending Walmart.  He annoys people on those sites too with the way he reposts the same dribble over and over again.  Some even wrote letters to the editor.

http://www.nu-look.net/walmart/lte

He also turns a fight against a proposed Casino into yet another chance to bitch about not getting a Walmart there.
