Running Wal-Mart may have made Lee rich beyond his wildest dreams but it certainly hasn’t been fun. Just look at the numbers since he took over (2000). Why CEO’s grow grey.
According to a 2004 McKinsey & Co. study, 2 to 8 percent of Wal-Mart customers surveyed stopped shopping at the chain because of its negative image.

2007 Sales - 344 Billion (208% Increase)
2007 Net Income - 12 Billion (226% Increase)
Just look at those numbers.

...Just look at those numbers.
You failed to mention stock price or profit margin. Capitalization down 30%, and…
Most dramatically, overhead costs jumped 14.8% in 2006 alone and now amount to 18.6% of sales, compared with 16.4% in Scott’s first year—a momentous rise in a business that counts profit in pennies on the dollar.
Another record year, right Mary?

Great Speech. Brilliant vision. An innovative model for a global corporation. Inspiring to imagine the collaboration of people around the world will manifest it in reality.
I’m grateful Lee Scott has the intelligence as a leader to take such initiative and transform Wal-Mart into an organization that values social justice and environmental sustainability.
Deep change takes courage. Keep forging a new way forward!

...Lee Scott has the intelligence...
You lost me there, June.
“Our size causes us, when we do something inappropriate, which is usually done out of stupidity, to come across as being done out of arrogance.” ~ H. Lee Scott
Is it intelligent to consider stupidy superior to arrogance?

ddrb,
Gee, it’s funny that Target, K-Mart, nor the beloved COSTCO didn’t make the list either!! GM, Ford and Toyota, didn’t make the list either!! In fact, how many of the ones that did make the list are unionized and how many are not? Remember, unionized companies are so much BETTER to work for, aren’t they, so they should top the list, right?
