New Map Details Wal-Mart’s Land Use Practices

With more than 4,000 units (stores and distribution centers) in the United States alone, Wal-Mart controls an enormous amount of real estate. A new map, compiled by researchers at Wal-Mart Watch, profiles most of the existing and planned Wal-Mart stores and Supercenters across the United States. Included in the profiles is information on store size, proximity to nearest distribution center, and type of development property.

Wal-Mart is constantly expanding, and we need your help to keep the map up to date and accurate. Use the submission form to add information about Wal-Mart projects and proposals in your area. Working together, we can build the most accurate and up-to-date information possible. Click here to view the map.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR UPDATING THE MAP: Click on the map. Search for and click on your local Wal-Mart to see more information about it. Have something to add? Click “Update Information” and fill in the appropriate form fields. Can¹t find your local Wal-Mart? Click here to add it to the map!

COMMENTS

Needless to say, this is way too many.

How can individual Wal-Mart stores stay in business
if they are immediately and completely surrounded
by other Wal-Mart stores?

Self-cannibalization would seem to be the order of
the day.

Using such large dots to keep it as close to scale as possible is a nice touch.  I know the idea is to make it look as saturated as possible, but it’s kind of dishonest, and makes the map completely pointless other than for the purpose of propaganda.

Dave,

Using those large dots, makes it look like there are no places for peoples houses!!  According to that map, those stores must be quite large and cover a couple of counties!!  Just another example of how things can be blown out of proportion, by the anti group!!

...but it’s kind of dishonest...

Dot size. A substantive argument if I’ve ever heard one.

Face it, boys and girls, according to most retail analysts, Wal-Mart critics, and even Wal-Mart itself, they are fast approaching saturation.

If it makes you feel any better about the ‘dots’, think of them as representing a store and it’s area of influence. (40 mile radius, isn’t it?)

It would be interesting if the map also included all the abandoned and closed Walmart’s as well.

Perhaps they could be in black.

Robert -
There is indeed a field on the submission form asking if the store has been abandoned or left empty. For the purposes of this map, we count that as land Wal-Mart is using.

...kroger stores...

“(40 mile radius, isn’t it?)”

Not to mention that in this part of the country (and in other parts as well), Wal-Mart slaps up it’s SuperCenters about 20 miles apart.

“A substantive argument if I’ve ever heard one.”

You seem surprised Ken.  Aren’t all of RDS’ “arguments” as substantive as his great “dot theory”?  Why do you suppose he stays ups so late at night?  It can’t be easy coming up with the crap he does!  Wouldn’t you like to be a fly on his wall and hear his wife nagging him?  “Robert, get off that computer and do something useful.  I need you to make a run to Wal-Mart.  We’re all out of toilet paper.”

Screwedby,

“Not to mention that in this part of the country (and in other parts as well), Wal-Mart slaps up it’s SuperCenters about 20 miles apart.”

That is total bull, I can show you many places where in Wisconsin, you would have to drive a lot MORE than 20 miles to find a Wal-Mart store!!

“Wouldn’t you like to be a fly on his wall and hear his wife nagging him?”

First, my wife doesn’t ‘nag’ and second, at least I have a wife and have been able to live with her for 44 years, what’s your track record with women?  And, lastly, I’m retired, so I have 9 hours a day more than working people do, to get things done!!

BTW: ddrb seems to spend many more hours on the computer, than I do, how come you don’t comment about her time?

...a lot MORE than 20 miles to find a Wal-Mart store!!

Copy & Paste the following URL for a map of Wal-Mart locations in Wisconsin.

And look at the size of the DOTS!

...what’s your track record with women?

I’ll be terribly disappointed, Double D, if you have any track record with women.

Ken V,

“And look at the size of the DOTS!”

They may be ‘big’, but at least you can see parts of the state, in between the dots!!  The map above, shows the state, entirely covered by dots!!  And, it is more than 20 miles from the Superior store, to the nearest store from it!!  In fact, except in the southeast corner, most of the stores are more than 20 miles apart!!

Ken V: I won’t prove a disappointment to you,Kenzu.

RDS, are you saying you moved to Arkansas because there weren’t enough Wal-Marts in Wisconsin?

I’m saying I move to Arkansas because there aren’t enough large blue dots in Wisconsin!!
