New Video: Wal-Mart Workers Come To Washington, DC
Last week, Wal-Mart workers came to Capitol Hill to speak out and urge their Senators to pass the Employee Free Choice Act. It has been the most powerful testament that we’ve seen that Wal-Mart workers need change—now.
Especially powerful was Eugene Hart, of North Miami Beach, FL. His passionate plea for change brought a standing ovation from his fellow co-workers.

A group of union “salts” that do not like WM. What a suprise. Such a small group compared to the 1.2M that do not want a union.

Walmart doesnt need any unions, the costs alone raise 30% for a company that seems to be the only company in america who is still truckin through this rec. do we really want to cut into a companies profits that is employing 1.4 million employees? do we HONESTLY want to raise the unemployment rate? Do you people who sit here ranting and raving on walmart really see the good out of walmart? 1.4 million people work for walmart, walmart and sams club are huge corporations that worked hard to get where they are, who are you to sit here and blog how crappy walmart is? ya they put other companies out of business, why? competition! ya walmart might be an anti union company, ya walmart might not pay enough to live respectively, BUT its a job, a job that is amazingly easy, a job that is worth the pay, a job that helps! its better than not having a job! unemployment right now is at 13.7 million in the usa… do you guys really want to attack a company that employs 1.4 million empoyees? and in worse case senerio raising the unemployment rate by TEN percent! WOW you people at watchwalmart, and all you walmart haters must really be out there to hurt a company who has been saving people money (making thier lifes better! good company moto huh!) and employeeing a huge percent of people who cant find anything better, just because your not seeing the profits they are through the hard work of competition and mass explosion of stores! lets all look at the bright side like the * in the middle of wal and mart, they are employeeing millions, saving people millions, and making billions of dollars that are being taxed for our massively huge national debt! COME ON PEOPLE WALMART ISN’T OUT THERE TO HURT ANYONE!

I used that terminology in another post in regard to cutting hours. Something to the effect that Wal-Mart was starving these employees out.

WM is only a cultural villian to the paid bloggers on this website. Funny for years it has been the same few people ranting to themselves and this site and whenever some wants a negative view for a positive story on WM they always get someone from Walmartwatch to provide some dumb___ quote. The SEIU needs to give it up and save the money raised by the sweat of the members that pay their dues by dropping this site and it’s attack on WM. How much money did they spend to fly all these union salts to Washington? It is no wonder that workers in the SEIU office in Washington picketed thier own office for unfair treatment.

No union has EVER existed that has robbed and pillaged the American worker in the manner that the non-union Wall Street thugs, thieves and weasels have.
However, major,non-union corporations who offshore taxes ,and use tax avoidance scams come a close second.

If people only knew the truth -
These loving people that only want to help the workers of the world, wonder why their leaders are all millionaires?
Wade Rathke, Andrew Grossman, Barack Obama and so on…
Take a group like ACORN - 2 workers in 2003 were working 54 hours a week with a salary of $20k a year tried to join the UFCW and what happen? ACORN fired them. Did you know that ACORN’s founder was the UFCW’s #1 Organizer?
As a BCTB&GM;member I severed on trustee board for my local for a few years, you would be amazed how much of the workers hard earn money goes to line these self appointed organizers pockets. Simple stuff like Exec. Board members using union gas cards to fill all of their family cars.
Make no mistake about these self-appointed worker rights groups like walmartwatch, they are in this game for one reason and one reason only.
Everyone has this crazy myth that the unions want the workers $35 a month dues, that is nothing and ins only used to pay the local’s bills. The REAL money is when the Union gets control of the workers pension and health care. Just a small local like the one I was in had 2k members and took in over $41 million a year. Yea i know your yelling WTF , BS and what ever else you were programed to think but do the numbers I have seen the papers.
Number - say 2,000 worker and a company pays $10 per hour up to 40 hours per week for a total benefit package.
2,000 x $10 = $20,000 x 40 hours = 800,000 x 52 weeks = $41,600,000
GET THE FACTS ABOUT - where these self appointed Organizers are getting their CASH!

ddrb soon forgets labor leaders that steal from the union funds to pay for thier push to re-elected or gifts for their girlfriends. It is no wonder the percent of american workers that are part of a union are way down. Unions can’t deliver except to put people on picket lines or unemployment lines. Thugs in business… tell that to the people that have been met with pipes, chains and guns on the parking lots of factories and etc. by those who wish them to sign a card.

The 401(k) suit against Wal-Mart—Braden v. Wal-Mart was filed in March,2008 and is currently seeking class-action status—claims that the company breached its duties as a fiduciary by allowing its 401(k) plan participants to be charged “unreasonably expensive” fees.
In its answer, Wal-Mart SAID DISCLOSURES about such things as “HOW investments OPTIONS were SELECTED” or “REVENUE SHARING ARRANGEMENTS” are “demonstrably IMMATERIAL to any investment decision faced by participants.” (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
In addition, Wal-Mart accused the suit of disregarding the relation of the fees to the overall costs of administering the plan and ignoring “the economics of participant directed individual account plans.”
The company pointed out that the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) does not call for plan fiduciaries to consider ONLY price when selecting investment options OR select the least expensive options.
The case was filed on March 27, 2008, against Wal-Mart on behalf of the Wal-Mart Profit Sharing and 401(k) Plan under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, or ERISA.
Braden v. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., alleges that Wal-Mart and others, as fiduciaries of Wal-Mart’s retirement plan, failed to act solely in the interests of the participants and beneficiaries of the Plan, and failed to exercise the required skill, care, prudence, and diligence in administering the Plan’s assets from January 31, 2002, through the present.
The complaint claims Wal-Mart selected and offered to Plan participants UNREASONABLY EXPENSIVE retail funds, despite the ready availability of reasonably priced high-quality investment options. As a result, the plan SQUANDERED tens of millions of dollars of participants’ retirement savings in order to pay for overpriced mutual funds, which, on top of everything, significantly UNDERPERFORMED their benchmarks. This resulted in larger fees being spent on inferior products.
Based on conservative estimates, the Plaintiff in Braden estimated Wal-Mart’s actions have caused the plan to WASTE over $60 million of participants’ retirement savings on excessive fees and unreasonable expenses alone – and will continue to do so at the rate of $20 million per year if allowed to continue.
In addition, the complaint describes at length what the Plan would have been worth had it made responsible investment choices – for example, at year end of 2007, the Plan Investment Options were worth $2.861 billion, while an investment in index funds would have been worth $3.002 billion, or $140 million more.
The suit is seeking Wal-Mart and defendants to “make good to such plan any losses to the plan,” as well as any other equitable or remedial relief as the court may deem appropriate.
The plaintiff is seeking the Court to adopt the measure of loss most advantageous to the Plan, putting the participants in the position they WOULD HAVE been IF the plan been properly administered. This could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. It is believed this class action could number over 1,000,000 participants.
WMW, Wednesday, July 23, 2008~~~~~~~~
NOTE: Well, that might explain a lot ,if the allegation that Merrill Lynch was receiving a kick back-according to the plaintiff’s lawsuit filing,i.e.:
“The complaint goes further, in alleging that Plan trustee Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. received revenue-sharing and OTHER UNSPECIFIED KICKBACK PAYMENTS via Plan investment options, without actually providing ANY services to the Plan, the suit alleges.”
If true,it might also explain the arrogance on WalMart’s point to assert that HOW WalMart selected certain funds was immaterial to the retirees.[!]
Merrill Lynch was absorbed by Bank of America recently, and there are bonuses supposedly going to Merril Lynch execs.
[Wonder if any of them scheduled to receive bonuses were instrumental in this Braden vs.WalMart ERISA trustee account by chance?]

EFCA?
How’s about R-I-C-O?
To wit:
“President Obama’s top antitrust official this week plans to restore an aggressive enforcement policy against corporations that use their market dominance to elbow out competitors or to keep them from gaining market share.
The new enforcement policy would reverse the Bush administration’s approach, which strongly favored defendants against antitrust claims. It would restore a policy that led to the landmark antitrust lawsuits against Microsoft and Intel in the 1990s.
The head of the Justice Department’s antitrust division, Christine A. Varney, is to announce the policy reversal in a speech she will give on Monday before the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy research organization. She will deliver the same speech on Tuesday to the United States Chamber of Commerce.
The speeches were described by people who have consulted with her about the policy shift. The administration is hoping to encourage smaller companies in an array of industries to bring their complaints to the Justice Department about potentially improper business practices by their larger rivals. Some of the biggest antitrust cases were initiated by complaints taken to the Justice Department.
Ms. Varney is expected to say that the administration rejects the impulse to go easy on antitrust enforcement during weak economic times. She will assert instead that severe recessions can provide dangerous incentives for large and dominating companies to engage in predatory behavior that harms consumers and weakens competition. The announcement is aimed at making sure that no court or party to a lawsuit can cite the Bush administration policy as the government’s official view in any pending cases.

Social Investment Funds Back Labor Union Organizing Measure
By Holly Rosenkrantz (Excerpt)
May 11 (Bloomberg)—A group of mutual and pension funds that invest in social causes is urging Congress to support legislation that would make it easier for workers to join unions.
The 26 funds, led by Domini Social Investments, Progressive Asset Management Inc. and Merseyside Pension Fund, sent a letter to lawmakers saying that business opposition has damaged the prospects for the Employee Free Choice Act, known as the card- check bill. The group of investors says they represent $372 billion in assets.
“The business community has come out really aggressively against this bill, but not all businesses or investors are unified in their thinking,” Adam Kanzer, managing director of Domini, said in an interview.
The legislation, organized labor’s top goal for the year, would allow workers to chose to form a union when a majority sign cards requesting one, bypassing secret-ballot elections that employers often require before unionization occurs.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the nation’s largest business lobbying group, has vowed to spend $20 million this year to kill the bill. Other business-backed organizations and individual companies, such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc., oppose the measure.
Several senators who supported the measure in the past, such as Democrat Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, have cited the recession as a key reason they can’t back it now. (???)
The investment funds said in their May 11 letter......
“Unionization can have strong long-term benefits for individual companies,” the group said in the letter. “Union- represented employees have lower turnover rates than non-union employees, leading to lower training and hiring costs.”~~
NOTE: The Domini Fund booted WalMart OUT of its approved list of socially responsible investment choices way back in 2001.
Type Domini Fund into the search engine on this site for further info.

Ken V in Texas states, “Tell that to the 14-year-old sweatshop slave in Bangladesh.”
Once again, you have posted your narrow-minded, selfish idea that Wal-Mart actually employs the “14-year-old sweatshop slave in Bangladesh,” if there even is such a person.
Wal-Mart buys its goods from suppliers, To the best of my knowledge, Wal-Mart does not own one single plant or factory where they make their own products. If you know otherwise, please do tell.
OK, OK..you are going to come back with the response that Wal-Mart is buying goods from the supplier that has this alleged sweatshop and is therefore responsible for the workers there. Let me ask few questions? How about the computer you are using? Where was that made? What were the factory conditions there? How about the clothes you are wearing? What were the factories like where they were made? Unless you are using a computer that was fully made and assembled in the USA, you have no room to talk. Unless all of your clothes were Made in the USA, you have no room to talk.
All of you on this blog KNOW that Wal-Mart has the most strict overseas factory inspection program out there, yet you continue to harp on the subject.
How about if we just close the trade borders and force all products purchased in America to be made in America? Why don’t we do that? Why haven’t any of the union bosses come to the realization that there is such a huge calling for products Made in the USA?? Why?/Because they know that union shops could NEVER produce the quality of product for the low price that CONSUMERS demand. Unions have gone and practically priced themselves out of the country with their self-righteous ideals on how valuable they are....
