The Employee Free Choice Act Legislation that will truly make a difference for Wal-Mart workers

Wage & Hour Issues Read how Wal-Mart continually fails to pay every worker for every hour worked

Health Care Wal-Mart's still insures barely over half its employees on the company plan

Always Low Wages Poverty-level wages make life extremely difficult for Wal-Mart's 1.4 million workers

The Environment How Wal-Mart's business model is detrimental for our planet

Not Our Style

In the latest issue of Vogue, Wal-Mart spent $835K on ads, according to estimates from the Los Angeles Times. Wal-Mart Watch can't let this story pass without putting a crimp in Wal-Mart's greedy style. So let's bring the focus back to how Wal-Mart shortchanges its female employees.

Responding to Wal-Mart's new ad campaign, Wal-Mart Watch spokesperson Tracy Sefl: "Wal-Mart thinks educated women will be so excited about the prospect of cheap merchandise that they will forget about how Wal-Mart does business. Wal-Mart is facing the nation's biggest class action gender discrimination suit. They must hope working women care more about clothes, shoes, and purses and less about equal pay, promotions, and fair treatment in the workplace. Moreover, we look forward to a Wal-Mart ad that declares, 'Better Health Care For Our Employees is The New Black.'"

A 2003 report from California State University professor Dr. Richard Drogin reveals some troubling numbers:

Women hourly workers earned up to 37 cents less per hour than their male counterparts

"Overall, women earned about $5,200 less than men, on the average, in 2001. Within the hourly workforce, women earned about $1,100 less than men, and about $14,500 less among management employees, in 2001"

Once again, the bottom line takes precedent at Wal-Mart.

I’m also struck how WalMart wants to reach out to these people, whom they label elitist as soon as the PR chips are down.  They’re playing both sides of the mythical culture war against the confused middle.

As for whether educated women will care if WalMart’s employment practices are unfair, I’m afraid they don’t - yet.  That’s why efforts like this one and WakeUpWalMart.com are so important.

How much do the female employees of Wal-Mart Watch earn compared to their male colleagues?

It would be very interesting to see if the staff of WMW, Wake-Up-Wal-Mart, and the attorneys suing Wal-Mart shouldn’t be the first to throw stones.

I don’t think the analysis regarding the wage disparity goes far enough.  If we were to look at the opportunity cost of those wages--I think it tells a more complete story.

If the “average” woman were to take her $5200 ($433/mo) and put it into the stock market for 20 years at an average annual rate of return at 10% (the historical average) she would have amassed $313,486.  If the female hourly employee put the $92 into the stock market (same conditions) she would have $66,607.  For the woman in management--she is losing $874,576 in opportunity cost.  I don’t know what Wal-Mart’s 401k contribution is--but if that were added in--because of the law of large numbers--we would see even more opportunity slipping away from its female employees.

I think that this or similar calculations should always be made for these kinds of discussions--even though I am aware that a lot of women wouldn’t put their money into the stock market--because we know they cannot make ends meet on these wages--but it is the OPPORTUNITY they are being deprived of.  In addition, we know that women and minorities have substantially LESS net wealth/net worth than men--and it is due to these missed opportunities.

Wal-Mart is not the only culprit--there are many companies and governments who do not pay equitably.

Same job. Same pay. It’s not hard. However when your world revolves around any and every tactic to save a buck here save a buck there (for your shareholders or your upper management) is it any surprise they now find themselves behind the 8 ball in this discrimination suit? I hope it wallops them right between the eyes.

I like Kevin Brancatto - for this simple fact.

Although I think him biased, although I initially hated his cross-polination of this board, I appreciated his correction of the NEA link board.  I appreciate him correcting them that he is pro-walmart.  I will read anything and everything he writes, no matter how much I disagree with him, as long as I know where he stands.

P.S. Walmart Watch - thanks for adding back my post #148.

By the way Kevin.

You were soo concerned on your board about the “urban legend” in the Southwest about gang initiation rights of a killing of two Walmart shoppers - a mother - son - and employee.

Only problem was, it came to fruition - the next day.  Premonition perhaps.  Soo much concerned, after the fact, that you buried the post under 12 new posts, when you only average three per diem.

You updated and reposted it, when you learned it was a random act - for the purpose of continuity.

I shall still read your blog - because I only make a decision, when all has been taken into consideration.

I wonder if Walmart is also capable of that?

One last snippet - from Mick as gleaned from Factesque.com.

One of the Walmart spokesperson “clones” responed to him, and Mick got the ip address.

Maybe those clones (where’s Mona Williams anyway?), aren’t spokespersons after all.  Maybe they’re paid shills.

Kevin at alwayslowprices.com; suddenly got objective.

The worst I would think - whichever way the wind blows.

The best I would think - truth is welcomed regardless of the venue.

I think your article may be misleading.  If there are more part time female employees than male, and if there are more females in entry level positions, then it is likely and not at all unusual that the average female employee is making less than the average male employee.  Besides, if females for whatever reason freely agree to accept a lower wage, that’s certainly their choice.  Are you going to deny individuals the choice to accept any wage they deem sufficient, or deny the choice of a business owner to offer any wage or employment terms he decides will fit into his business plan?

If you’re talking of the women named in the discrimination suit they are long term employees. It turned into a class action suit because there were so many all over the country
and evidence at least apparently exists it’s been company policy---not being privy to all the evidence given in the courtroom I can tell you one thing all the rulings in the case so far have been going against WM and the few reports I’ve seen seem to be saying that the evidence WM has brought in to defend itself has been flimsy compared to the plaintiffs.
WM tactics seem pretty much to me (and I am no legal analyst) simply to delay and appeal decisions. From the standpoint of the present it looks like they’re losing big time.
