Parents Staying Clear of the Toy Aisle This Year

This story comes on the heels of yesterday’s article from Boston Globe: consumers aren’t buying toys this holiday season, and they certainly aren’t buying them at stores like Wal-Mart. Knowing Wal-Mart’s dependence on China-made goods and the company’s notorious devotion to low prices at the cost of safety, parents are staying away from Wal-Mart this Christmas. With store sales struggling to stay afloat, can Wal-Mart afford to keep selling such cheap toys?

Not your typical toy-buying season [MarketWatch]

Before the recent spate of toy recalls, Ashley DiGeronimo never bothered reading the fine print that revealed where a toy was manufactured.

“I never gave it a second thought,” said DiGeronimo of Montclair, N.J., who lists Legos and Hot Wheels among the gifts her boys Alan, 7, and Robbie, 4, will get for Christmas.

This year, however, is different. Before dashing off to Toys “R” Us or jumping online, parents are doing their homework following a four-month onslaught of recalls, tallying more than 21 million toys.

Toymakers have been struggling with a flurry of product issues that have called the industry’s reputation into question ahead of the crucial holiday-shopping period. The recalls have cost millions in testing, legal and advertising costs, as well as for product returns.

High levels of lead paint have been cited in some cases, while magnets that can come loose and pose choking threats and other health hazards also have been the focus of consumers and regulators.

Now parents are checking the federal recall list, asking shop clerks where toys are made, avoiding plastic toys or in some cases sticking to board or card games.

Still, “it’s a challenge,” said Laura Jeffris of Evanston, Ill., north of Chicago. “Anything I buy could be recalled for lead paint.”

Jeffris and her neighbor, David Putzel, feel safer with wooden toys. “We tried to buy less plastic-made toys and more natural-wood products,” said Putzel, who also buys toys made in Europe, where he says environmental standards are stricter.

The prize Christmas gift for his 2-year-old daughter: A wood-doll playhouse with no paint. Jeffris took the same route, buying a fire-station house from Pottery Barn for her 2-year-old son. It, too, is made of wood.

Parents don’t have many choices; they are at the mercy of the toy industry.

“My feeling is that if toys are on the shelf, they should be safe,” said Liz Rey of Brookfield, Conn., a mother of 3-year-old twin girls.

Added DiGeronimo: “After three months of this, I would think the recall situation is under control.”

Proposals are afoot to increase funding at the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, the federal agency at the center of the firestorm over toy safety. See full story.

To really protect kids, consumer advocates say that Congress and the president need to agree on a law that would require independent third-party testing of toys. See related story.

For the time being, free tests to check toys for harmful toxins are taking place in U.S. cities such as Framingham, Mass., San Francisco, South Bend, Ind., and other locales.

Mike Locraft, a father of three young kids, said that he is skeptical of toys made in China. “I will pay attention to where toys are made and won’t hesitate to spend a few dollars more for a toy not made in China,” commented Locraft, who shops for toys at Target or the local malls near his home in Gaithersburg, Md., a suburb of Washington, D.C.

Brands taking lumps

It’s the biggest sales period of the year for toymakers. But Gerrick Johnson, analyst at BMO Capital Markets, isn’t expecting a gangbuster finish. He anticipates that toymakers will report sluggish fourth-quarter shipments.

“It appears to us that discount stores are struggling when it comes to selling toys,” said Johnson, who has been making visits to Toys “R” Us, Target Corp. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. shops in Connecticut, New Jersey, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

One beneficiary of the recalls, he added, will be specialty-toy retailers that tend not to stock toys of brand-name companies.

Some toymakers are looking to capitalize on the recalls. Little Tikes Co. is showcasing “Made in the USA” stickers on its toy boxes, while Hasbro Inc. is running newspaper advertisements touting its clean record. “You should feel good about buying Hasbro toys and games,” the ads read.

The message is a poke at rivals Mattel Inc. considered the poster child of the recalls, and RC2 Corp. The recalls affected some of Mattel’s most-popular brands, including those produced under licenses for characters such as Elmo, Big Bird and Barbie. Mattel, whose stock hit a 52-week low Dec. 4 and is down 10% this year, has since terminated relationships with some Chinese subcontractors.

RC2, which this summer recalled five Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway items due to levels of lead in surface paint, issued another voluntary recall last week. This time, it wasn’t toy-related: It was for a recliner feeding seat and a training potty seat. Its shares are down 35% this year.

Mike Barry, of Bucks County, Pa., pointed out that he is taking extra precautions this year, but doesn’t plan on boycotting toys just because they’re made in China. From some of the federal recall bulletins he’s read, Barry said there were “too many ifs” to make a toy hazardous.

In some instances, “all the stars had to be aligned,” he said, adding that teaching your kid not to eat the toy is one safety precaution.

What do you mean?  Don’t you watch the news?  And even this article states stores like Walmart.  So that would include Target, K-Mart and Toys’R’Us for instance.  So yes, everyone is saying a DAMN (correct sp) thing about the others.

I for one am not buying my nephews anything manufactured in China no matter what store it comes from.

You do realize most of the media is owned by conservatives, don’t you?  On radio and television more air time is devoted to conservative news programs than progressives.  And in newspapers across the country more editorials are written by conservatives.  My husband used to write for a small town newspaper in Oregon and it just so happens his editorials got complaints from both Republicans and Democrats.

This whole liberal biased media is such a crock.  You have to be a subscriber to SIRIUS to find most left talk radio.  Way much more conservative biased news out there and they even have their own news network FAUX NEWS.  You would love going to my gym as that is the only choice you have while using the cardio machines.

vantress-

Wanted to thank you personally for being the Oregon taxpayer sucker of the year 2007-

Oregon
2005 - Total # of Wal-Mart Employees in State: 11,035
2005 - Estimated # of Wal-Mart Workers on Medicaid: 1,457
2005 - Estimated # of Wal-Mart Dependents on State Health Programs: 889
2005 - 2005 - Estimated Total Cost; Federal & State:$8,037,702

For all the years before and since, we want to thank vantress for willingly subsidizing WalMart at the corporate hog trough of public largess.

Thanks vantress for being the WalMart meat popsicle choirboy with the ‘dead conscience’ sucker you are! Kudos from Bentonville and the multi-billionaire Waltons.

Perhaps a candlelight vigil at 182nd and Powell with ghost dancing by yourself will make you feel better.

“What happened to Costco stock...?” ~RDS

What was that you were trying to tell us about SPIN not long ago, RDS?

It’s called selective perception.  You conveniently left off the part about Costco’s quarterly profits being up 11%

In case it escaped you totally, the whole stock market was down in the past few days following the Fed’s less than spectacular announcement of interest rate cuts. The recent turmoil in the stock market is directly attributable to the sub-prime mortgage fallout.  Morgan Stanley called for a “mild recession” yesterday.

Care to try again?

Screwedby,

Oh, I see, it’s perfectly okay to point out when Wal-Mart stock isn’t rallying, but bad to point out when the touted Costco is down, right?  If Wal-Mart stock is down, it’s Wal-Mart’s poor business model that’s at fault, but, if Costco stock is down it is just a market downturn, right?  Costco stock was down, because it FAILED to beat estimates!!

“On radio and television more air time is devoted to conservative news programs than progressives.”

Did you ever stop to think maybe there are more consertive new programs in the media because they make money unlike the Liberal (oops I mean progressive) crowd who has yet to figure out how to make a dime.  Just ask Al Franken and Air America how well they have succeeded in finding listeners to pay the bills.

And the newspapers in Oregon are fairly even when it comes to op-ed pieces written by conservative vs. progressives.  This is an interesting site for anyone who wants to view the stats for your state.

All This Political Speculation is Going Nowhere!

The bottom line is this:  If ANY candidate that is currently running for president was serious about changing the direction of this country, doing away with “business as usual” in Washington, and “had any balls” he or she (sorry Hillary...you’ll have to borrow Bill’s balls.  Nah...on second thought...) would run as an independent candidate, and not as a “Republican” or a “Democrat.”

Until there is a viable 3rd Party in this country and until the American electorate gets totally fed up with the gridlock in Washington, they might as well bring their quarters to the voting booth and label one side with an “R” and the other with a “D.” Good luck and may the best coin flippers win!

Richard,

“From a nice Federal Government surplus to huge deficits under Bush and the Republicans”

That’s easy to say, if you want to disregard FACTS.  It is easy to create a surplus, when you RAISE taxes, close down military bases and reduce military budgets and have NO major Wars or Hurricanes to contend with.  Get rid of the facts that Bush had to rebuild the military, pay for 2 wars, and pay for the destruction of 2 MAJOR hurricanes, and you may find that we might still have a surplus.

I have a hard time understanding why people seem to be content with constantly paying higher taxes, knowing how governments WASTE so much of the money collected, to the point where they will argue in favor of higher taxes. Guess, that is why they think that, instead of living on a budget, it is better to ask for higher pay and benefits, the way the government does.
