Breaking News: State Orders Wal-Mart To Sell Plan B Contraceptive
Breaking news from the Boston Globe:
Wal-Mart said today it plans to start stocking and selling the emergency contraception drug Plan B at its 44 Massachusetts pharmacies after receiving a directive from state regulators.
The retailer said it is also giving serious thought to carrying the drug at all of its 3,700 pharmacies nationwide. The only other state where Wal-Mart sells the so-called morning after pill is Illinois, where a state law requires it. Elsewhere, Wal-Mart has refused to stock the drug for undisclosed “business reasons.”
The state Board of Registration in Pharmacy voted unanimously this morning to require Wal-Mart to stock and dispense Plan B, a high dose of hormones that women can take three to five days after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.
The pharmacy board cited a regulation requiring all pharmacies to dispense “commonly prescribed medications in accordance with the usual needs of the community.”
Wal-Mart had indicated it would comply with any directive of the board and a company spokesman confirmed that after the board’s vote. The board acted on a complaint from three women who brought a prescription for Plan B to Wal-Mart pharmacies in Quincy and Lynn and were turned away. The women are also suing Wal-Mart in state court.
Melissa Kogut, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, said she is hopeful Wal-Mart will start carrying the morning-after pill nationwide. “What’s happening here in Massachusetts is really a turning point,” she said.

I’ll admit, this legislation did suprise me. I thought a better explaned law would have to come about before this decision would go through.
It just goes to show what the public can do if they’re willing to speak out; even against the most powerful company in the world.

Wal-Mart doesnt carry the brand of ice cream that I like to buy. Do you think we can pass some legislation making them sell it??? I am tired of having to buy it from other retailers.

I’m all for that Big T! I think we need some legislation to force Wal-Mart should to stock my favorite brand of ice cream-- Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia. Oh...wait a minute, I don’t shop at Wal-Mart--Never mind!
If you don’t have an argument or comeback Big T, just take the conversation to the point of ridiculous irrelevancy, huh?

as a wal-mart employee big t i can tell you we do stock that brand at least at the store i work at.
as far as making any company carry a brand or item of anykind passed as comunistic this used to be a free country but now there are all kinds of laws making places do what the few upstairs want them to do. it should be each pharmacies choice what they carry. usually companys will comply with what the cusomers wany. not what goverment wants.

This is what is wrong with MASS. and what it looks like is happening to the rest of America. We force people by law to do things as private citizens, companies, etc, that is not right. Just like the case in Maryland forcing wal-Mart to pay a certain % of their Gross income on Medical benefits. How much more comunist, socialized can we get. Next thing you know the goverment of states like Mass will come and tell me Keith you have to spend 10% of your income on charity, you must spend 20% of you income to have medical insurance on your kids, 15% on food including 10% coming from organic food, etc, etc. How stupid does this sound. But it is the same diffrence. Why should a private business be able to be told to do something with their own income. or Be told to cary a drug in their pharmacy that is not really required by the state law of Mass. Mass law requires all pharmacies to cary, and be instock, or offer(special orders) all medically required drugs. How is Plan B medically required. It is not, was having the Sex required, no because if it was required it was probably rape.
Now I am a Right to Life, liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness person who works for Wal-Mart, but after researching the Drug More. This drug was tecinally already carried by Wal-Mart in lower doses. It is just basically higher potent Birth Control pill. So even in my moral conviction that life begins a feritlization, fertilization never happens when you take this drug, and it is not tecnically killing a fertilized egg. So a lot of the horrah about it, has been over blown and it has been more a political thing than a reall Pro-Choice vs Pro-Life, BUT!!!!!
A private business should still have the right to carry un-medically nessacary drugs if they choose.

It really says something about a state when they feel that a drug designed to benefit victims of rape is considered to be “commonly prescribed medication in accordance with the usual needs of the community.” I’ll have to remember to stay out of Massachusetts.
Notice that Wal-Mart is complying as they promised they would. If Wal-Mart was as bad as some of you claim, I think they would be fighting this mandate in court and refusing to comply. Does this mean that the Pro-Life side of the debate is going to say Wal-Mart is evil for killing babies?

Someone,
“Does this mean that the Pro-Life side of the debate is going to say Wal-Mart is evil f’or killing babies?”
it is only a matter of time before WM is chastized for killing babies.....
I say make it an over the counter medication and let everyone carry it.......
