Sustainability, Wal-Mart Style
The Christian Science Monitor today tells us that Rio Tinto, the company Wal-Mart signed to supply it with “sustainable” jewelry, is currently blamed for thousands of deaths in the South Pacific:
The raw materials for Wal-Mart’s Love, Earth line are extracted by the Anglo-Australian mining company, Rio Tinto, and a major gold producer, Newmont Mining Corp. These companies are interesting choices, to say the least. Rio Tinto is currently fighting a suit under the federal Alien Tort Claims Act that blames the company for the deaths of thousands of Bougainville islanders in Papua New Guinea. Rio Tinto’s copper mine, the suit alleges, resulted in environmental destruction and crimes against humanity stemming from a military blockade motivated by civilian resistance to the mine.
You gotta wonder...what kind of companies will be supplying the other 90% of Wal-Mart’s jewelry?
(*the above picture is a Cyanide lake at a Russian Gold Mine. Wal-Mart’s mine in Nevada will also use Cyanide, although supposedly in more “sustainable” way.)

A GREAT WAY TO SAVE MONEY.
About half of the Wal-Mart’s in the south and Midwest have Murphy gas station on the premises. In this area the Murphy gas station is anywhere from $.10 to $.15 cheaper than the other stations in the area. More than half of those stations sell Diesel, which typically has even a larger discount. Survey’s of the Murphy station have shown that the gasoline, they sell is identical to that sold a Sonoco, Texaco and the other name brands. This is your opportunity to hit back at big oil.
When driving on the Interstate, many of the exits show the gas stations at that exit. Just look for the Murphy sign. Not only have you found a gas station with less expensive gas, but you can find even further savings at the Wal-Mart. Also, Wal-Mart sells Rand McNally road atlases for $5.97. These road atlases have a listing of all Wal-Mart’s in the US and Canada and identifies those that sell gasoline, including Diesel.

Like I had mentioned before. About half of the Wal-Mart’s in the south and Midwest have Murphy gas station on the premises. This brings us to the ignorant southerner who likes to smoke Camels while filling up with cheap gas. Wal-Mart was careful enough to realize this could pose a problem for their inventory of cheap Chinese crap that would be even more toxic if it caught fire.

Johnny: How about that oil spill of over a million barrels of crude from a Murphy Oil refinery into a nearby residential community after Hurricane Katrina , a few years back?
ddrb in
Saturday, July 19 at 09:42 AM
You can safely disregard the phoney Johnnies and ddrb. They are paid SEIU shills.
As regards ddrb’s comments about the Murphy Oil and the Katrina oil spill. Keep this in mind. This was the Hurricane Katrina that decimated New Orleans. If you actually read the news reports on the event, you will find that Murphy oil acted very responsibly.
As regards the leases between Wal-Mart and Murphy gasoline stations. If I had a gasoline station located on my property, I would want a provision in the lease covering oil spills.
Even if you take ddrb’s remarks seriously, you can still save at Murphy. You can also save money using the Murphy sign on the freeway. If you get off at an exchange that advertises Murphy oil, you will generally find the other stations on that exchange to be less expensive than nearby exchanges. I just visited a Wal-Mart with a Murphy gas station. The other stations near the Murphy were within a few cents of the Murphy price. As I drove further away, the prices kept getting more expensive. I live over twenty miles from the Wal-Mart/Murphy station. The prices at my Texaco station was twenty-one cents higher than Murphy.

Johnny:Firstly,I’m not a shill----paid or otherwise. Secondly, Murphy Oil was found liable in the Meraux refinery incident because it was determined that Murphy had not filled the tanks with water to weigh them down, which is standard procedure, prior to the storm.Hence, they were lighter in weight, and that’s why they floated adrift, spilling one million barrels into the homes and soil of the nearby neighborhoods. This was well documented and on many news reports.

Background
A 250,000 barrel above ground storage tank (tank # 250-2) was dislodged, lifted and damaged in flooding associated with Hurricane Katrina. At the time, the tank contained 65,000 barrels of mixed crude oil, and released approximately 25,110 barrels (1,050,000 gallons). The released oil has impacted approximately 1700 homes in an adjacent residential neighborhood; an area of about one square mile. Several canals have also been impacted: the 20 Arpent; the 40 Arpent; the Meraux; the Corinnes; the Delarond; and, various unnamed interceptor canals.
As part of the Hurricane Katrina Response, and pursuant to FEMA Mission Assignment, US EPA and the US Coast Guard (USCG) have responded to an oil spill from the Murphy Oil facility. US EPA and the USCG have agreed to divide responsibility for overseeing Murphy’s cleanup of the spill. The USCG is overseeing Murphy’s removal of free oil in the canals, tank farm containment area, neighborhood streets and storm drains. To date, approximately 18,000 barrels of oil have been recovered. US EPA is working closely with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) in overseeing Murphy’s cleanup of oil in residential areas accessible to the public (e.g., parks, school yards, roads, highway median strips, sidewalks).
US EPA is also overseeing Murphy’s ongoing sampling activities of residential and other properties. Ten percent of the samples Murphy collects are split, and US EPA sends the split samples for independent analysis. Thus far, Murphy has collected 8808 sediment samples from 5440 properties. Of the 8808 sediment samples collected, US EPA has sent 909 split samples for separate analyses. US EPA has received, evaluated and is posting the results of the first 881 samples.~~~~~~~~
ddrb in
Saturday, July 19 at 06:23 PM
Data Evaluation - Initial Sampling
The primary contaminants detected in sediments were polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), diesel and oil range organic chemicals, and arsenic. A screening level risk evaluation was performed by comparing the results of samples to LDEQ’s Risk Evaluation/Corrective Action (RECAP) Screening Standards for Soil (PDF) (5 pp, 42 K, About PDF). The RECAP screening standards are intended to be protective levels based on long-term (i.e., 30-year) exposures to children and adults in a residential setting.
View results | Download data
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)
PAHs, such as benzo(a)pyrene, are commonly found in fuel oils and crude oil, and were detected above LDEQ screening levels for residential soil in approximately 2.5% of the sediment samples split with Murphy. The oily nature of some of the samples resulted in elevated detection limits. Thus, while some of the other samples may be reported as non-detect, the actual levels of PAHs may also be ABOVE the screening levels.
Diesel and Oil Range Organic Chemicals
Levels of diesel range organic chemicals exceeded the LDEQ screening levels for residential soil in approximately 29% of the samples; whereas, levels of oil range organic chemicals exceeded the residential screening levels in approximately 21% of the samples.
Arsenic
The results of inorganic analyses are available for a limited number of the sediment samples collected. Two samples exceeded LDEQ’s screening level of 12 mg/kg for arsenic. One sample contained 12.5 mg/kg arsenic, and the other contained 13.1 mg/kg arsenic.~~~~~~~~~~EPA

I would submit that much of the data for carbon footprints will be used as a defense in future global warming litigation cases. Shareholders may be given more latitude to sue companies over management’s failure to curb emissions in pursuit of short term profit, and failing to adequately disclose the likely consequences of its business methods to not curb emissions , could prompt securities fraud class action suits by investors. ddrb. In spite of the length of your comments, there is little in there that indicated Murphy did anything wrong. As described in Wikepedia “Employees of oil refineries in the disaster area have stated on online forums that their refineries filled tanks with water in order to prevent them from floating away. However, typical pre-Katrina industry standards on the Gulf Coast were based on a heavy rain event, and did not anticipate a full inundation of water around the storage tanks.”
The Murphy oil spill and the recovery has been described by some as one of the few bright spots in New Orleans and Hurricane Katriana.
If you can find any oil company who has not had an oil spill, by all means buy their gasoline. In the meantime, I will continue to save money at Murphy whenever possible.

Walmart has to have a serious toxic effect on people and communities with all the massive junk they sell that must be recalled or thrown into the dump. This is a waste of resources including land, time, money and the health of people. Some people will do anything for money and promoting Walmart is not a healthy thing to do anyway.

And PRIOR to 2005 Hurricane Katrina :~~~~~~~~~~UNITED STATES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DOJ
January 23, 2001 EPA
WWW.USDOJ.GOV
Myra J. Longfield, U.S. Attorney’s Office
MURPHY OIL REQUIRED TO SPEND OVER $12 MILLION TO REDUCE POLLUTION AND PAY $5.5 MILLION IN CIVIL PENALTIES
Madison, Wisconsin—The Justice Department, the U.S. Attorney’s office in Madison, Wisconsin, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Wisconsin Department of Justice today announced a proposed settlement with Murphy Oil USA, Inc., which will dramatically cut sulfur dioxide (“SO2”) emissions from the company’s Superior, W.I. refinery, and will also improve Murphy Oil’s programs to monitor and repair leaks of volatile organic compounds and to prevent oil spills. Murphy will also pay a $5.5 million civil penalty, the largest ever leveled in Wisconsin in an environmental enforcement case; the State of Wisconsin will receive $750,000.
In Orders issued on May 18, 2001, and on August 1, 2001 after a ten-day trial, Chief United States District Judge Barbara B. Crabb found Murphy Oil liable for substantial violations of Clean Air Act emission limits and permitting requirements as well as water permit, oil spill containment and waste handling requirements. Most importantly, Judge Crabb ruled that Murphy Oil violated the Clean Air Act when it made major modifications at its refinery without obtaining the required Prevention of Significant Deterioration ("PSD") permits, part of EPA’s New Source Review program. She specifically found that, when Murphy Oil obtained a PSD permit exemption from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, it had “withheld information knowingly and intentionally and that if it had submitted the withheld materials, they would have been material to the [WDNR’s] decision making process.”
Murphy Oil obtained a PSD permit exemption by withholding necessary information from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources when it submitted a permit application. Specifically, Judge Crabb found that Murphy Oil “withheld information knowingly and intentionally and that if it had submitted the withheld materials, they would have been material to the (WDNR’s) decision making process.”
“The impressive outcome of this case is the direct result of a successful, cooperative effort by State and federal officials,” said Tom Sansonetti, Assistant Attorney General of the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division. “Companies that knowingly withhold information from regulators should be prepared to face the consequences of their misconduct.”
ddrb in
Sunday, July 20 at 03:48 PM
I commend the State of Wisconsin for partnering with the federal government to bring this important case to closure, and for working to make the air cleaner for its citizens and neighboring states,” said Christie Todd Whitman, EPA Administrator. “EPA will take all actions necessary to enforce our environmental laws against companies that put the public at risk by not complying with the law.”
The settlement requires the company to:
install and operate a tail gas treatment unit to substantially reduce SO2 emissions from the sulfur recovery unit at the refinery;
apply for and obtain a Prevention of Significant Deterioration permit;
comply with stringent SO2 emission limitations until the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources determines what the “best available control technology”(“BACT”) is for the sulfur recovery unit;
implement a comprehensive and improved refinery-wide program to minimize the emission of volatile organic compounds (“VOCs”) from the refinery’s pumps and valves for five years;
undertake measures to bring certain oil storage tanks into compliance, including measuring certain containment areas and increasing their capacity, if necessary; and
undertake two environmentally beneficial projects at a cost of approximately $7.5 million over a five-year period to further reduce SO2 emissions from other refinery process units.
The consent decree only resolves Clean Air Act New Source Review violations at the sulfur recovery unit—it does not preclude EPA or the State of Wisconsin from investigating and bringing enforcement actions for violations of New Source Review requirements at other units at the refinery, if any.
The new control technologies and programs to be implemented by Murphy Oil at its refinery will reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide and volatile organic compounds, both which can cause serious health problems for the young and elderly.
“As a consequence of Murphy Oil’s violations, the company has been emitting SO2 from its sulfur recovery unit up to 20 times the level that would have been allowed if it had applied BACT or complied with New Source Performance Standards,” said U.S. Attorney Grant Johnson. “This agreement requires the company to comply with stringent pollution control standards, just as its competitors do.”
Wisconsin Attorney General Jim Doyle said, “The State continued to work closely with the federal government in the prosecution of this case. We are pleased this consent decree will significantly reduce the SO2 emissions from the refinery and improve the air quality for the citizens of Superior.”~~~

ddrb, your whole argument is absurd. There were 44 oil spills during Katrina for a total of 7 million gallons. The largest was four times the size of the Murphy spill.
Pick any oil company and you will find a record similar to Murphy. If you apply the same standards to all oil companies before you buy fuel, you will not be able to buy any fuel. If you do not believe this, Google “XX Oil Spill” and “XX Environmental Violations” for whatever oil company you choose for XX and you will get thousands of responses.

The people spending their time posting comments here against WalMart are considerable and most likely unpaid. The SEIU has a paid staff that already brings out the extensive materials in article form here at this site and they hardly need to contribute fake comments to their own blog as they survey the media wires for information on WalMart as well as university studies and institute white papers and even WalMart’s own press releases and the huge history of WalMart faux pas etc.
However, sociologists, preachers, environmentalists, basic union members from many professions, citizens and neighbors sick of WalMart’s presence and the problems caused by WalMart to a local community, economists, ex-employees etc etc etc and the general public at large will pass upon these pages as unpaid commentators to the dismay and embarrassment of WalMart and its cultural engineers.
WE KNOW from WalMart’s own admissions that they pay fakes, shills, trolls, and frauds to patrol the internet attempting to defend WalMart business theology and anti-social, anti-family practices and sing the worship hymns of psychopathic indifferent deceptive commercialism.
U.S.: A New Weapon for Wal-Mart: A War Room
by Michael Barbaro, The New York Times
November 1st, 2005
Wal-Mart’s aggressive new posture is a departure from its tradition of relying on an internal staff to manage the company’s image. The war room, which is part of a larger Wal-Mart effort to portray itself as more worker-friendly and environmentally conscious, runs counter to the philosophy of the chain’s founder, Sam Walton. Believing that public relations was a waste of time and money, the penny-pinching Mr. Walton would not likely have hired a public relations firm like Edelman, Wal-Mart’s choice to operate its war room.
The contract went to Edelman, which assigned its top two Washington operatives to the account. Wal-Mart would not say what it is paying Edelman, nor would it allow interviews with the war room staff.
As Abraham Lincoln put it- “What kills a skunk is the publicity it gives itself.”
WE KNOW from the Edelman people that they and WalMart have repeatedly conspired to defraud the American public through the internet.

Behind the Scenes, PR Firm Remakes Wal-Mart’s Image
By Kris Hudson
If Mr. Scott, the chief executive of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., seems like he’s running for office, it’s no accident. For the last 15 months, the Edelman public-relations firm, led by seasoned political operatives, has been directing a campaign it calls “Candidate Wal-Mart.” The goal: Rescue the battered image of the world’s largest retailer.
“In terms of PR strategies, Rubel last year told BusinessWeek that the first job for companies is to monitor the blogs to see what people are saying about them. The next step is to think of damage-control strategies. And when blogs attack, he says companies have to learn to track what blogs are talking about, pinpoint influential bloggers, and figure out how to buttonhole them, privately and publicly (see BusinessWeek.com, 5/2/05, “Blogs Will Change Your Business"). Edelman’s Web site states that, as senior vice-president in Edelman’s me2revolution practice, “Rubel is widely viewed as an expert on conversational marketing."”
“When engaging the audience in dialogue, credibility and transparency is key, as Rubel noted with his own case study from Edleman PR’s blogging campaign for Wal-Mart.
Rubel told the audience that Edelman ran a blogging war-room for Wal-Mart where they identified the most pro- and anti-Wal-Mart bloggers and engaged them on a daily basis with information.”
http://www.internetnews.com/xSP/article.php/3606591
The length we pro-WalMart shills go to defending WalMart are truly ridiculous, always without substance and yet meaningful to us personally as trolls and frauds for the WalMart public relations squad. Lying is all we have left for WalMart. The anti-WalMart crowd troubles us so much we must post here daily as fakes pretending that we don’t work for WalMart. About half of the Wal-Mart’s in the south and Midwest have Murphy gas station on the premises. In this area the Murphy gas station is anywhere from $.10 to $.15 cheaper than the other stations in the area.

“or the serious possibility of a union coming into the company,”
As far as I know, there is NO serious possibility of a union coming into Wal-Mart!! All I see, is a union ‘FISHING’ for another company to represent!! And, after over 2 years of trying, the record is Wal-Mart - 2, The unions - 0!!
Since SDV, Ken V., Screwedby, ddrb, and even Alex claim that ‘none’ of them are paid, I feel just terrible that all of them are being cheated out of life as fervent, dedicated, strange and random members of the union and Anti Wal-Mart defense and propaganda cult!! You each can get help here-
Mental Health Council of Arkansas | 501 South Woodlane, Suite 104 | Little Rock, AR 72201 | Phone: (501) 372-7062 Fax: (501) 372-8039!! But, I fear, that it may be too late for SDV, he may be beyond help!!

The Anti Wal-Mart writers are so much better than we are that I plagiarized from SDV!! But stealing from other people is the Wal-Mart way!! Sam Walton was brain dead when he was talking about unions!! Help me Johnny Wishbone!!, help me!! Please bbrd save me!! Somebody pull me out of the conundrum Wal-Mart public relations toilet before I go down the drain!!

If I were you, bb, I’d bask in a call for assistence even if it is pure sarcasm. I mean, come on, who in their right mind would turn to you for help of any kind?
**Hurry and reply, bb, before they shut this blog down!

Ken V: Here’s hoping that Hurricane Dolly has not had any adverse effect upon you or members of your family. It IS that time of the season.

former employer…
When you wildly stab in the dark like that, bb, you only prove one thing. You’re just some, poor, independent snook, hoping to suck up to Bentonville.
If you had any connection with Wal-Mart you would know I have never been in their employ. Wal-Mart’s relationship with me has always been more....um...adversarial.
What’s good for Wal-Mart is BAD for America!

i think it’s funny how all of you hate on Wal-Mart, yet probably do most of you shopping there. deep down you all know that the same “junk made in China” is the same as that at any other retail outlet. Wal-Mart just gets more publicity because it is the largest retailer out there. Just look at the made in sticker on anything you have purchased elsewhere. Those stickers are no different than the ones at Wally World. I’ll be honest, I work there. Do I think it’s the greatest place in the world? No. But6 it is a job like any other. I get paid well, competitive for the area of the US I live. And no, I am not a manager, I work third shift slaving away like everyone else. I do more and get paid crap...oh wait that’s right, I work in RETAIL! Retail is the worst paid profession out there. For people who complain about it, get another job. Some of us are smart enough to realize that the crappier the job may seem, the smaller the pay. As for benefits, I am able to by meds that I need for myslef and my family of 5(including myself) at a reasonable price. Most of the meds are $4! Hello...you can’t do that, your list is only about 400 or so, mine is about 3000. I can take my kids to the doctor for the same amount of co-pay that others do. People who bash other jobs just have no idea. If you don’t like it, really, don’t go there. You won’t be hurting anyone’s feelings. You’ll just be another angry customer with hatred on the heart and brain that I and my co-workers don’t have to deal with.
