The Tragedy of ASDA’s “Comedy” Shirt
From The Sun:
ASDA has withdrawn from sale a T-shirt designed by women after complaints it was offensive to females.
Campaigners said the £4 T-shirt — with the slogan “If at first you don’t succeed, buy her another beer” — was an incitement to rape.
But it is believed to have been designed and produced by a women-only team. It was part of George at Asda’s “comedy” clothes range.
The supermarket giant apologised after it received “a number of complaints” when Rape Crisis launched a letter-writing campaign on internet chatrooms.
Asda had sold 15,000 of the T-shirts without complaint before the campaign.
Louise Robertson, of West Dunbartonshire Women’s Aid, welcomed the Asda move last night.
She said: “I am delighted so many people complained to Asda and they have seen sense and withdrawn this T-shirt.
“They were an incitement to rape and, having worked in this field for 22 years, I can tell you that rape is no laughing matter. Asda should make payment to Women’s Aid or a similar organisation.”
An Asda spokeswoman said: “We’re sorry anyone found the T-shirt offensive — that wasn’t our intention.”

Surprise, surprise someone with their hand out because they were offended. Liberalism run amuck you have to love it.

Tony,
“Asda had sold 15,000 of the T-shirts without complaint before the campaign.”
And, these T-shirts were ‘designed’ by women!! I would bet that everything would offend someone sometime. Some people have no sense of humor. Watching the BBC, I think that the British would be a little more acceptable of these types of things, just watch Benny Hill for instance. Guess you must be right, just another group looking for some quick cash!!!

I’m offended by abortion, affirmative action and liberals. Therfore, Planned Parenthood, the NAACP and the Social Democrat party owe me money.
I’ll be expecting the check shortly.
Pay me what you owe!!!!

Nick V, keeps saying that “perception is reality”, but fails to add “in the mind of the perceiver”, therefore, only a person who has rape on their mind, would think that is what this T-shirt advocates. I can think of dozens of other perceptions one could take from it!!!
One example: If at first you don’t succeed (to get her to dance), buy her another beer!!
Remember, if you think it’s dirty, it’s because YOU have a dirty mind.

Sage,
“Having also been in the bar business for over twenty years,
the subtle or subliminal message is/was there.”
So, you are saying that when a guy bought another beer for a woman, he was planning on raping her? Must have been a real ‘bad ass’ bar!!! I know that it could be interpretted as trying to have sex with the woman, but, rape, has little to do with sex and most guys just try to get laid, not rape someone.

The Sage is right and Bob is wrong. By encouraging a girl have another drink, the man is trying to distort her good judgement. He is taking her by force though it may be gradually.

Trudy in Ariz your post is most accurate.
Bob in --why do you post when you know nothing about the bar I owned. It was a place that I was able to help men improve their lives, get better jobs (in some cases) and it was sometimes called a “an establishment of higher learning”. Yes at times men got carried to far.
You owe me an apology Bob, for I have lost all respect for you. No because a man would buy a drink did not mean he was planning to “rape” her. It could have been friendship and also to get her to let her guard down as Trudy said.
You owe me the apology Bob!! Your remark of “...a real ‘bad ass’ bar!!!...” was an insult to me. We allowed virtually no profanity, we were called an “establishment of higher learning”. We sold more beer than any other bar in a large geographic area. Might add that a staunch Christian friend who loved beer would not allow ANY profanity when he was there --Big HeinZ we called him 6’4” and 300# --he was not a “bad ass” Bob he was a wonderful Irishman.
I was accused of being a Jesus freak for I loved the Lord and yet I had the most successful business. Minister friends of mine (a Baptist minister used to actually have a couple of beers with me and we discussed everything) said I had to get out of the business, but I had more people to counsel than he did. Most of the men had all types of problems, we would go in the back and I would pray with them (I had a Bible on my desk) never would I embarass anyone As to this thread I think WM was stupid to ever allowed the sale of these shirts, regardless of who designed them. Because one woman’s group did is that a consensus?

Sage,
First, my comment about being a ‘bad ass’ bar, was in responce to the contention, that ‘buying another beer for a woman meant you were going to rape her’ and you said that you were an authority on the intentions of men, by being in the bar business for twenty years. While I’ll agree, that most men, who associate with women in a bar, have hopes of sex and will do what they feel necessary to obtain that objective, their intent is rarely “rape”, but rather consentual sex. And, while beer does ‘distort good judgement’, I believe that most women know this going in and when they consent to that extra beer, they also know what the results might be.
I feel that I may want to qualify myself here, I was a heavy drinker for many years, but have been off liquor for about 25 years now. I have found that, nothing ‘good’ ever comes from the use of alcohol. You say that your bar was considered “an “establishment of higher learning”.”, but then agree that drinking distorts judgement, how can distorted judgement enhance ‘higher learning’? If it could, maybe it would be good to serve beer in our local school systems, ya think? All I have ever seen in a bar, is a bunch of drunks, acting stupid and having their lives fall apart!!! I know my life didn’t go forward, until I stopped going to bars!!! And, I know that my son would still be alive, today, if he hadn’t got run over by that guy coming home from the bar, with ‘distorted judgement’!!!
I apologize to you if you misunderstood my point, that being, that a message printed on a T-shirt, promotes rape, is ridiculous.

I agree with what Bob is saying. The Sage guy is nuts. What kind of a bar is a establishment of higher learning? Bob is right. Bars are filled with drunks who are driving home drunk. If a bar was a place of higher learning then just serve alcohol in schools like Bob said. Also anybody who has a funny on their shirt is joking in the first place or they wouldn’t have it on their shirt. A shirt can say anything it wants.

Bob in—Thanks for your apology and I’ll let it go at that.
You didn’t know the bar and the reason for the statement
“of higher learning” so we’ll let that go for now
Stephen in --please go back to the middle of the universe,
and as I just said to Bob you also have no idea what the slogan meant and/or was it was about
I will let the ladies who read these post make the comment on your last two sentences and how they take it. May I ask one question: if a young man came to your house to have a date with your daughter wearing such a shirt, what would you do? Thanks in advance for a honest answer.
