The Wal-Mart 2008 Shareholders Meeting
In considering our coverage of Wal-Mart’s 2008 shareholders meeting, we might as well start off talking about the big thing on everyone’s minds: Miley Cyrus did not appear. While some may say that shareholder meetings are about discussing company business and voting on resolutions that could potentially make a difference in the lives of millions of Wal-Mart employees, we all know that’s not true. Wal-Mart’s shareholder meeting is really just about self-congratulation, and big A-list musical acts.
The company didn’t disappoint. Wal-Mart executives and board members spent almost four hours patting themselves on the back and providing enjoyable, quality entertainment to the 15,000+ guests gathered in Bud Walton Arena. Our colleagues back at the Wal-Mart Watch home office have more coverage and commentary of all the events. And in case you’re wondering, yes, those are flying trapeze artists in picture #2.

Just seeing some of the labeled apparel—never mind the “Titan-Tron” broadcast of the self-stroking Home Office—was enough to make me nauseous. How anyone could buy into this whole corporate ‘Brave New World’ atmosphere gives me pause when I think about the future of humanity....

Walmart shareholder meetings are just a lot of fluff with very little substance.

AS A TEN YEAR ASSOCIATE, YES A LOT OF THE SHAREHOLDERS MEETING IS ABOUT THE STARS AND FUN. BUT ITS PURPOSE IS TO BRING ALL OF THE STORES, CLUBS AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THE ‘WALMART’ FAMILY TOGETHER. ITS A ONCE IN A CAREER OPPORTUNITY FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE ASSOCIATES WHO ATTEND. ITS FUN BECAUSE ITS WALMART- WE AREN’T EVERY OTHER COMPANY.

THANK YOU MARCI! WE ARE NOT EVERY OTHER COMPANY! I HAVE BEEN IN THE FAMILY 9+ YRS. NOTHING WRONG WITH A PAT ON THE BACK WHEN WE HAVE SO MUCH TO BE PROUD OF. PEOPLE LOVE TO GET DOWN ON WALMART...MAYBE BECAUSE IT IS VOGUE, OR ENVY...I’M NOT SURE… BUT WHAT I AM SURE OF, (AND I WORK AT STORE LEVEL), I AM VERY PROUD OF MY WALMART FAMILY.

Something Was Missing!
“big A-list musical acts” and ”“flying trapeze artists”
I know what was missing! It was the disembodied talking head of Sam Walton. ("Walmartopia")

I don’t know why anyone would get down on Wal-Mart, but I take exception to store employees writing in all caps. It makes me suspicious that they’re hiding something.

Here is the definition of a serious shareholder meeting from the free dictionary:
shareholders’ meeting n. a meeting, usually annual, of all shareholders of a corporation (although in large corporations only a small percentage attend) to elect the Board of Directors and hear reports on the company’s business situation. In larger corporations top management people hold the proxies signed over to them by many of the shareholders’ to vote for them. (See: shareholder, proxy, board of directors, corporation)

way creepy that the “associates” repeatedly refer to walmart as “the family”, just like members of the mafia, or any cult.

You are right Gregg. These people are not part of the family, and they are not associates.....they are employee’s of Walmart corporation.
All this is family stuff is just a bunch of Industrial psychology bs. Kind of like all the car dealership commercials that say you are family to them. Truely I would hope that people are smarter than that.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THE ‘WALMART’ FAMILY TOGETHER. ~ Marci Maunu (10 yrs.)
“The open-door policy, merit raises, and grass roots policies are nothing but myths in the Wal-mart religion. They are as real as our wonderful healthcare program, and Corporate’s fair work practices, and the tooth fairy. Maybe if enough of us speak up, the general consumer will realize we are not just complaining. If the Wal-mart empire is supposed to be one big happy family, then we are it’s stepchildren.” ~ Sylvia D’Angelo (9 yrs)
I know that the management of any given store has a lot to do with the associate’s view of the comapny as a whole, but I would like to ask Marci and Beth, what was the turn over for your store last year?
**Hint to Marci and Beth: Using all CAPS is the same as screaming. It makes you appear shrill.

to unravel the vast web of lies and propaganda, i recommend walmart “family” members and all other brainwashed corporate sycophants research Edward Bernays (nephew of Sigmund Freud) who is the grandfather of modern propaganda and mass mind control. Several videos are online. Bernays admits that after Hitler co-opted his ideas, soiling propaganda’s good name, the fascists who run US industry and govt renamed the techniques “public relations”.
other useful info for freeing the mind can be found in the book/film Manufacturing Consent by Noam Chomsky, and Network by Paddy Chayefsky.
War is a Racket, by Gen. Smedley Butler.

unless we wake up enough people and soon, we will live in a corporate run totalitarian police state that is coming online now.
