The Wal-Mart Rock - But Check That Axe Before You Buy

Are you ready to ROCK?!?!?!?!

This is a lighter story, yes, but still so very, VERY disappointing to those of us amatuer axe-grinders who must take out our non-musical frustration on helpless videogames. Sure, I could have signed up for guitar lessons years ago, but why do that when for $50 I can pick up a used copy of Guitar Hero for my quickly aging PS2 and grind away like I’m the love child of Eddie Van Halen and Eric Clapton...if that sort of thing, you know, didn’t violate every law of human reproduction ever written.

At least, however, in my case I am aware that I am buying a slightly older (and in my case, gently used) version of the game. But behold the poor, poor guitarist-wannabe who gets his prized game home from the local Wal-Mart and finds the retailer has sold him a repackaged - and dated - version!

Yes, I know that the Gods of Rock will most assuredly smite the mighty sinner known as Wal-Mart...but, in the meantime, better check that label before you purchase. Wal-Mart has a way of repackaging that should make you feel shaky all over.

Wal-mart Guitar Hero 3 bundles may include old guitars [ars technica]

Anxious rock stars who ran to the nearest Wal-Mart to pick up a copy of the recently-released Guitar Hero III found themselves with an unexpected surprise. Apparently, Wal-Mart has been quietly selling altered versions of the new Guitar Hero III bundle which actually include the Guitar Hero II guitars rather than the newer models.

Consumers have noted seeing both the Xbox 360 Xplorer guitars and the PS2 Red SG guitars instead of the expected Les Pauls and Kramer bundles with Guitar Hero III.

Word first came from various forums around the Internet, with warnings that gamers should thoroughly inspect the packaging of the game before running home to play. “Don’t let your excitement for the game distract you or you might get home and find your desired Les Paul has been supplanted with an older model guitar,” one thread notes.

If you’re planning on picking up the game from your local Wal-Mart, you may want to take a look to make sure you’re getting the right version.

Does this smack of a vendor dumping it’s obsolete inventory on the lowest bidder?

Wal-Mart isn’t exactly the darling of gamers to begin with and Guitar Hero is huge!

Another PR coup from the Beast.

I’d be inclined to share the outrage if this was the only version for sale in their stores (it’s not, they are also selling the game alone and bundles that include the newer wireless guitars). Or, if the price was the same as the wireless bundle (it’s not, it’s less expensive). Or, if the boxes were labeled deceptively (they are not, they even have pictures of the guitars on the front of the box). Or, if they were the only store selling bundles with wired guitars (there are not).

tjc,

So, are you saying that people should pay attention to what they are buying, as there may be a variety of things?  I guess, if I went to the store and grabbed a box of shoes and when I got home, they were the wrong size, I should be mad at the store, because I didn’t look to see what size they were, at the store!!

how about we start paying attention to the other retailers like k-mart,target and etc.because they have have a lot of merchandise sold in those places made with cheap labor overseas that have had to be recalled.of course no one says a darn thing about that.stop blaming walmart for all of socieities problems.get a life people.target and k-mart are not darlings of gamers either.

“how about we start paying attention to the other retailers like k-mart,target...”
matthew

Within your deep meditation and thinking skills with observation and insight abilities… perhaps you will pay attention to the fact that this is a Wal*Mart specific site. Wal*MartWatch is (now get this) about Wal*Mart. Wal*Mart is to blame for some of this society’s ills and much of the retail problems and good job losses in this country.

reality sandwich in case you have not noticed we have freedom of speech in this country.i am expressing my opinion.if you dont like it too bad.keep on spending 30.00 to 50.00 on pants at your favorite expensive kohls and fred meyer stores that you are so madly in love with.the 10.00 to 12.oo walmart pants last you just as long.i dont care what site this is or not.i have a right to my opinion.and i feel most of you walmart haters are badly misinformed and bald faced lied on walmart by the govt and labor unions.you dont have the brains to investigate walmart on your own.your arrogant attitude is always so what if my favorite store sells merchandise made in china with cheap labor big deal, ill only pick on walmart that does it just because they are bigger and kicking the other retailers tails in sales and prices.so you walmart haters stoop to the childish level of degrading and putting down and lying on walmart because of you dont like it that we want to save money and cant afford to shop at high costs stores like you.we shop where we can afford to.dont degrade us because of that.

With the garbage you keep spewing out matthew vantress, I’m inclined to think you are the love child of RDS.

Here’s something for you to slowly percolate though your brain:  With all of the PR blunders coming out of Bentonville, we don’t have any need to “lie.” The Truth is, as the saying goes, stranger than anything we could make up.  Here’s a start:  Do a search for, and read about the Susan Chambers memo.

Try telling that to SDV, you know, the one who talks about COSTCO all the time on this Wal-Mart site!!  But, he’s anti Wal-Mart and pro Costco, so I guess that makes it okay!!

i dont need to read any susan chambers garbage to know about walmart thank you very much i have investigated them on my own and have discoverd that their wages and benefits are very competitive in the retail industry compared to all your favorite higher cost stores like k-mart,target,home depot and etc.sorry i dont buy all this garbage and baloney on walmart watch.com,wake up walmart.com.i dont buy any garbage the unions and govt spew on walmart.the govt and labor unions lie all the time and could care less about walmart they just want to get in there and get more money to throw in hillarys campaign.

It would appear your investigation has some gaps, matthew. If not, I’d be interested in how you reconciled this:

A new study from Aaron Dubedube (Du-Bay), research economist at UC-Berkeley, shows that when Wal-Mart moves into urban and suburban areas retail workers’ wages take a hit.

“Overall we estimated that retail workers annually lost about $4.7 billion in the U.S. from Wal-Mart’s presence.”

The study estimates that Wal-Mart workers in California earn on average 31 percent less than workers employed in large retail as a whole, receiving an average wage of $9.70 per hour compared to the $14.01 average hourly earnings for employees in large retail (firms with 1,000 or more employees).

its funny ken why dont you use the same analogy when dollar tree, big lots and the other low costs stores move into the same surrounding areas.we dont hear crap from you about their low prices depressing the economy, area and putting everyone out of business.ken why dont you and your govt and union cronies go pick on k-mart for their poverty level wages they pay and the worse treatment they get than walmart workers get.k-mart pays significantly less than walmart and has much higher turnover.ken i can back that up because i worked for k-mart and observed myslf and many others treated like crap, and fired for no just reason and thrown on the sales floor with little or no training..of course ken you have no problem with the crap wages and benefits that your favorite other stores and fast food joints like burger king and mcdonalds pay their workers, but its walmart you throw a hissy fit.explain that to me.ken you are full of it on your 14.01 claim.if thats so true then why arent we seeing a mass exodus of walmart employees to the other retailers that pay so great as you claim?sorry ken i worked for k-mart and other retailers and if the pay was that high and great at these other places then why do they have such high turnover then?the pay at most retail places, walmart excluded is not very good ken.. i worked in retail and thats a fact.other retailers have much higher turnover levels ken i worked in retail myself and observed very high turnover and many co workers having to get on public assistance welfare because of low wages and unable to get enough hrs to qualify for benefits.sorry ken my investigation has no gaps because unlike you i have worked in retail and observed things up close.where walmart is located ken has nothing at all to do with how much someone is paid.its the companys decision what to pay workers.sorry i dont put stock in or buy biased, college ,govt and union backed studies.i dont need to i worked in retail.

no i did not get fired for not doing my job.how do you expect someone like me that was thrown on the sales floor at k-mart with no training and given no name badge to manage and run a building dept?i worked retail and observed things sir unlike you.i left the second retailer because i was unable to get full time work and also because the pay and benefits were very poor.

It’s EASY to Tell the Two RDS’s Apart

One is deluded… the other is not.

“Guess you have to choose someone who is listened to a lot...”

I’m not aware of anyone who “listens” to you RDS… at least not anyone who is willing to admit it.

Screwedby,

“I’m not aware of anyone who “listens” to you RDS… at least not anyone who is willing to admit it.”

Seems to me, that people want to use my initals in their posts, therefore someone MUST be ‘listening’ to me, I didn’t say they agreed with me!!

RDS (#2),

“I can’t understand why he thinks he is the only one on earth to have these initials, MUST BE EXTREMELY SELF CENTERED,AND THINKS THE WORLD IS ALL ABOUT HIM.”

No, I don’t think that I am the only one with these initials, but, when a person sees someone else posting under a name first, they should choose another name, so the posts don’t get confused!!  That is just common courtesy!!  You must think you are extremely self centered and the world is all about you, to think that it is okay to steal someone’s handle on a site!!  You do have a name, to go along with those initials, don’t you?  So, I think you could have found some other handle to use here, without using the SAME exact one I do!!

Screwed: I am intrigued by the numerous references to you and filmmaking-If you are involved in” docs” or “indies”, have you considered a project devoted to the WalMart effect upon neighborhoods,in particular.I know Greenwald’s film touched lightly upon this, but theres a WHOLE lot more to this story...just an idea!As I’ve said before,if your lovin’ WalMart, you ain’t livin’ WalMart!!

Ken V in Texas:My point exactly--there are thousands of folks who have been and are being terrorized 24x7 by the Golieth in their gardens(That is not a misspelling of Goliath,BTW)--Its a sadly underreported reality--There needs to be a website specifically to track how many neighborhoods are blighted by Bentonvillains, and a blog to share and expose the atrocious “good neighbor” practices employed by their corporate “neighbor.” This would be a real service to NIMBYS, in particular!

Have you looked at Sprawl Busters?

Ken V in Texas
Friday, November 09 at 06:27 AM

Ken v in Texas: Indeed I have,Ken, but that site is primarily devoted to keeping out big box sprawl-not a site to deal with issues once THE BEASTS ARE BUILT,OR WHEN THE SITE FIGHTS ARE LOST AND THE BIG BOXES BECOME A REALITY-THERE IS NO SITE TO DEAL WITH THIS REALITY!(I did not mean all that to be in caps)The data on just how many residential neighborhoods have been consumed by this presence is not available info to the best of my knowledge. A data bank registry could be helpful,as would be a blog to shares posts about the day to day experiences of attempting to coexist with the Beast This could be useful info on many fronts....from environmental issues to litigation purposes.
