The Women Who Make Your Children’s Toys

A photo slideshow from blog Shanghaiist portrays just a few of the thousands of women who work in factories in China. Working long hours for little pay, the women working in China’s manufacturing plants are only the first in a long line of women underpaid for their labor by multinationals like Wal-Mart. Whether in the factory or in the stores, Wal-Mart has been taking advantage of women for too long.

If you are looking to read more about Wal-Mart’s workers’ rights violations, the International Labor Rights Forum is releasing their report on Ethical Standards and Working Conditions in Wal-Mart’s Supply Chain.  I found it to be very useful.  The report raises awareness about the harsh working conditions that many Wal-Mart workers’ suffer worldwide.

The report is available at: www.laborrights.org/publications/WMEthicalsourcing102407.pdf

Thanks for the information, Michelle

The next time RDS buys a wallet, I think he should replace the photo that comes with the wallet with this photo of a young Chinese worker. He should take a good look at it every time he makes a purchase at Wal-Mart.

Screwedby,

Apparently, you didn’t see the picture slideshow!!  Here’s what I saw, a clean workplace, well lit, plenty of staffing, stools for the workers, and even smiles on some of the faces, etc., not much different than any U.S. factory!!  Have you ever worked in a factory setting?  These pictures show people who have it so much better than pictures I have seen of people bent over picking rice in a rice patty!!  And, lastly, they seem fairly well dressed and well fed!!  So, it would seem, that the only problem you would have, is with the wages, they aren’t as high as American wages!!

Looking at those pictures, makes me see how much better U.S. workers have it, even the ‘poor’ and the lazy, who get paid $10.00 an hour, to “pretend to work”!!

Did you miss the lead paint, fire hazard ,the way they ate and had to form lines it look more like a prision to me.

The only time they had mask on was to protect the product not when they were breathing in the fiber pollen or the plastics. Look again.

wallstreet & ooo,

Neither of you have ever worked in a U. S. factory either, I see!!

As for the lines, maybe they are just more polite than American workers, less pushing and shoving and people leaving the building like a herd of wild animals!!  As for the hazards, they exist here too and all people in a U.S. plant don’t wear masks either!!

As for seeing a prison or slave camp, you see what you want to see!!

it’s not an issue of being polite.  it’s being forced and coerced to act in such a way.  read the ilrf report.  read the nlc report.

the evidence is overwhelming, devastating.

What’s Worse Than “Pretending” to Work?”

Answer: Pretending you enjoy your work and are perfectly content.

Even an amateur photographer could tell the photos in the slide show were staged.  You’re right RDS… “you see what you want to see.”

I saw the stools that were provided for the workers.  None that I could see had any back supports on them.  Have you ever sat on a backless stool for 10-12 hours hunched over a workbench?  Those rice paddies don’t look so bad by comparison.

Screwedby,

If you are hunched over a workbench for 10 to 12 hours a day, what good would a back rest do?  And, if they did have backrests, you would be complaining that they weren’t padded well enough!!  No matter what they had, you would think it wasn’t good enough!!  Where I worked last, we would have been glad to have stools, even without backs, we were on our feet for 10 hours a day, working with 25#+ aluminum wheels!!

I’m sure we all wish our lives were as grim as yours seems to have been RDS. Hard work and productivity, that’s what life’s all about, right, Bootstrap Bob?

Ken V,

“Hard work and productivity, that’s what life’s all about, right,”

Right, hard work and productivity is what made this country great!!  What would this country be, if the pioneers didn’t work hard, and just had FUN all the time?  If there is a “Race to the bottom”, it is because this new generation values FUN, over hard work and government assistance, over productivity!!  Hard work brings out PRIDE in ones self!!  Laziness, leads one to find causes to fight for!!  Non productivity, leads to people losing their jobs!!

BTW: the only thing grim about my life, is having to put up with people who want everything given to them on a silver platter, without having to work for it!!

Am I the Only One Who’s Bored With RDS’ Stories?

“In my day...” “In my time...” “Where I used to work...” “This new generation...”

Every time you make utterances like this RDS, it reinforces what an Old Codger you are!

Screwedby,

To you, WORK is a four letter word!!  Have you ever had a job that didn’t require you to say, “Would you like fries with that?”?

I Know Lot’s of Four-Letter Words!

“To you, WORK is a four letter word!!” ~RDS

This is why we have to use small words with you RDS.  You get confused if a word has more than 4 letters.

I know other four-letter words too… like PLAY, GOLF, and BEER!

“Would you like fries with that?”? If you’re trying to be sarcastic RDS, at least be original.

Lucky Me!

“How come you’re the only one with a cyber-stalker?”

Yeah...makes me wonder if “Andy” is a Bentonville war room intern or just your run of the mill Wal-Mart shopper?
