Victory In Zionsville, Indiana
Great news today: last night the the Zionsville Plan Commission unanimously voted down a new Wal-Mart, citing “traffic, drainage and crime issues.”
But WISH-TV breaks down the long-awaited decision a little more than that:
Residents said the main reason they didn’t want Wal-Mart coming to town is because they like the small-town feel of Zionsville and they didn’t want Wal-Mart to ruin that charm.
“We just didn’t want to see Wal-Mart move in...don’t need any more,” said Thomas.
And then there’s this priceless gem:
Wal-Mart representatives were at the meeting and were fairly surprised by the outcome.
“It’s a rare obstacle that comes up. Usually we have a warm reception,” said spokesperson Jason Wetzel.
Right. Whatever you say, Jason.

Wal-Mart hardly gets a warm reception anymore. Most communities have opposition groups form quickly when they learn who wants to move into town. I can tell you opposition formed here immediately when we learned who wanted to come.
Perhaps Jason Wetzel should read all the stories on Al Norman’s site “sprawl-busters.com” There he would read about all the site fights and those opposing Wal-Mart’s coming to town.
Congratulations Zionsville, Indianna! When Wal-Mart comes to town, small town charm goes out the window.

Jane,
“When Wal-Mart comes to town, small town charm goes out the window.”
So, the TRUTH comes out, it is not so much that Wal-Mart is coming to town, as it is losing that “small town charm”, that drives most groups!!

Jane:” Charm and WalMar"t is oxymoronic, evidenced by the utterly uncharming remarks made by those attempting to “defend the indefensible-” . May I apologize on behalf of others who feel it necessary to insult you because they have no other defense?

I wonder how much these failed efforts cost the Beast?

Rare? And this…
Wal-Mart representatives were at the meeting and were fairly surprised by the outcome.
I’ve personally seen that look of surprise in the eyes of an agent of the Beast. They are so arrogant and used to getting their way that when they fail they just can’t come to grips with it. Deer in the headlights! Fantastic!

Ken V,
“Rare?”
If Wal-Mart builds about 250 stores a year in the U.S., how many of them are protested to the point that the store is not built?

I know, I know, it’s just one of “Kenbo’s keepers”, but if the same thing is good for, say, Wal-Mart Watch*, I say more power to Asda.
*Ever do a Google/Yahoo search for Wal-Mart? WMW always seems to be in the top five “hits”.

Perhaps, it’s because WM (among others) aren’t UFCW/union shops?
Looks like the UFCW’s next big thing to pounce-on is Tesco/Fresh & Easy.

bbrd,
“Looks like the UFCW’s next big thing to pounce-on is Tesco/Fresh & Easy.”
Also, I wonder why Target employees aren’t knocking down the UFCW’s door to become unionized!! Maybe if they did, they could catch up to Wal-Mart’s pay and benefit levels!!

Also, I wonder why Target employees aren’t knocking down the UFCW’s door to become unionized!!
Actually, Target is playing it “smart”, with all the union media campaigns focused squarely on Wal-Mart, it leaves Target to do pretty much whatever they want, without criticism.
Maybe if they did, they could catch up to Wal-Mart’s pay and benefit levels!!
Actually, Target and WM run pretty close in pay/benefits. For the unions, it’s an ego thing—their strategy is “bring Wal-Mart down, and the others will follow"…
As for Tesco, when they initially hit the U.S. west coast, everyone (including WMW) went ga-ga...fast forward a few months later, and they are now learning “the price of not doing business” with the UFCW.
