VIRGINIA SITE FIGHT: PLANS OPEN FOR PUBLIC VIEWING

Wal-Mart plans open for public viewing [The News and Advance (Lynchburg, Va.)]

Citizens now can see Wal-Mart’s plans for a new store off Old Forest Road.

The plans are available for viewing at Lynchburg’s Community Development Department on the second floor of City Hall at 900 Church St.

They show a 176,000-square-foot store going up in what is now the Forest Plaza West shopping center. Around the store would be space for other retail shops.

Wal-Mart’s consideration of the shopping center for a new store has drawn praise from some who welcome the new business and criticism from others concerned about its impact on traffic and the environment.

City Council is currently considering a set of new rules governing the building of retail stores larger than 50,000 square feet, but whether such rules would apply to the proposed Old Forest Road Wal-Mart is unclear.
