Vote Please :)
While we certainly wouldn’t recommend taking advice from Paris on a regular basis, and we most definitely don’t think you’ll meet your maker if you don’t hit the ballot booth, we’d like to take an opportunity to encourage all of our readers to go out and vote.
You might think we lean towards one candidate over another, and its possible you might be right [Sarah Palin says we have a constitutional right to privacy...interesting coming from her...but we’re going with it!], but regardless of who you support please take the time if you haven’t already to exercise your right and cast your vote for Barack Obama or John McCain. One of them is going to be our President-elect, and you’ll feel better knowing you participated in the process. You can even write me in instead if you’re so inclined - I’ve totally watched every episode of The West Wing, and am waaaayyyy qualified.
Anyway, I’m happy to say I braved the lines in Virginia to vote this morning, which means no death-by-Paris-Hilton for me. And I’ve got the sticker to prove it. So go vote! And remember...Wal-Mart [inserted for relevance purposes only]

Amen, RDS…
...but not without first saying that President-elect Obama and Senator McCain’s “after-the-fact” speeches were both class acts, all the way (something none of us saw in 2000/2004).
As for you, Kenbo, you may have added one name too many to your little list—doesn’t guys like Limbaugh actually garner better ratings when the Dems are in control??

“RDS quoting Lincoln? Change is truly here!!!”
Why shouldn’t I quote Lincoln, after all, wasn’t he a Republican, who worked for the rights of the blacks and the ‘little guy’? He also promoted the concept of ‘personal responsibility’!!

Now that this great nation has gone as far as to elect a black man President of the US, can we do away with quotas in the work place? (notice I didnt say African American because he, like most black people in America, is not from Africa)
Have we not shown now that regardless of the color of you skin you will receive equal opportunity in this great nation?
Congratulations to Obama. I didnt vote for him but (unlike democrats) I am going to support him as our President.

America has shown that it is indeed a class act. I’m only sorry McCain or Gore didn’t win in 2000. John McCain has all of my respect and as for the motley crew on this board… I think at the end of the day we all have more in common than not. We’re American and can be proud of that fact.

The monster years
Last night wasn’t just a victory for tolerance; it wasn’t just a mandate for progressive change; it was also, I hope, the end of the monster years.
What I mean by that is that for the past 14 years America’s political life has been largely dominated by, well, monsters. Monsters like Tom DeLay, who suggested that the shootings at Columbine happened because schools teach students the theory of evolution. Monsters like Karl Rove, who declared that liberals wanted to offer “therapy and understanding” to terrorists. Monsters like Dick Cheney, who saw 9/11 as an opportunity to start torturing people.
And in our national discourse, we pretended that these monsters were reasonable, respectable people. To point out that the monsters were, in fact, monsters, was “shrill.”
Four years ago it seemed as if the monsters would dominate American politics for a long time to come. But for now, at least, they’ve been banished to the wilderness.~~~~~~Paul Krugman,November5,2008

ddrb,
“it wasn’t just a mandate for progressive change”
If the Dems want to retain control, they have to remember, that the election was NOT “a mandate for progressive change”, but rather against what was!! If they fail to realize that fact, we will see another ‘change’ 4 years from now!! Many Republicans voted for Obama, but, they are still Republicans and will throw the ‘rascals’ out if he and the Dems don’t live up to what they promised!!

Hello Employee Free Choice Act, goodbye WalMart anti-union hit squad. We will see if WalMart carries through on their threat to close stores that unionize under fair and open rules. Americans have had enough of being played off against each other to benefit the corporate blood thirst for money. The vote was a national repudiation of Bushco and the green light to reverse the economic ‘WalMartization’ of America.
George W. Bush- America can’t hardly wait literally to get rid of him. The party is over. Bentonville gets nervous.

You are so right, the unions are on their last leg right now!! All one has to do, is to look at the UAW, watching their members being laid off by the thousands and now they are in Washington, begging for a ‘bailout’!! (How many Toyota or Honda workers in the U.S., do you see begging to get in the UAW)!! Why are the SEIU and UFCW pushing so hard to get Wal-Mart? Because they know without Wal-Mart, they are just part of a dying breed!! And, once unions are all but dead, watch how the jobs start returning to America!!

New International Version (NIV)
Numbers 11
Fire From the LORD
1 Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the LORD, and when he heard them his anger was aroused. Then fire from the LORD burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. 2 When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed to the LORD and the fire died down. 3 So that place was called Taberah, [a] because fire from the LORD had burned among them.
Quail from the LORD
4 The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, “If only we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. 6 But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!”
7 The manna was like coriander seed and looked like resin. 8 The people went around gathering it, and then ground it in a handmill or crushed it in a mortar. They cooked it in a pot or made it into cakes. And it tasted like something made with olive oil. 9 When the dew settled on the camp at night, the manna also came down.
10 Moses heard the people of every family wailing, each at the entrance to his tent. The LORD became exceedingly angry, and Moses was troubled. 11 He asked the LORD, “Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me? 12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant, to the land you promised on oath to their forefathers? 13 Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. 15 If this is how you are going to treat me, put me to death right now—if I have found favor in your eyes—and do not let me face my own ruin.”
16 The LORD said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people. Have them come to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you. 17 I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take of the Spirit that is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you carry the burden of the people so that you will not have to carry it alone.
18 “Tell the people: ‘Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The LORD heard you when you wailed, “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!” Now the LORD will give you meat, and you will eat it. 19 You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, 20 but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it—because you have rejected the LORD, who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?” ‘ “
21 But Moses said, “Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot, and you say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!’ 22 Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?”
23 The LORD answered Moses, “Is the LORD’s arm too short? You will now see whether or not what I say will come true for you.”
24 So Moses went out and told the people what the LORD had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the Tent. 25 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took of the Spirit that was on him and put the Spirit on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did not do so again.
26 However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the Tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp. 27 A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”
28 Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses’ aide since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”
29 But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!” 30 Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.
31 Now a wind went out from the LORD and drove quail in from the sea. It brought them down all around the camp to about three feet above the ground, as far as a day’s walk in any direction. 32 All that day and night and all the next day the people went out and gathered quail. No one gathered less than ten homers. Then they spread them out all around the camp. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth and before it could be consumed, the anger of the LORD burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague. 34 Therefore the place was named Kibroth Hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had craved other food.

“I have to wonder at your apparent glee that the US auto industry is in the toilet. I guess this global recession is a reason for you to dance in the streets.”
I have NO glee about the U.S. auto industry failing, but, if you do stupid things, you deserve to fail!! Why do people like you, want to ‘support’ failure and be ‘anti’ success? A recession, is like ‘cleaning out your garage’, it’s getting rid of things that are no longer useful and keeping things that are useful!!
Just a few minutes ago, on CNBC, Rick Waggoner (GM CEO), said, that they aren’t interested in restructuring and are going to go ahead with ‘business as usual’!! Well, ‘business as usual’ is what is taking them ‘in the toilet’!! All giving them a ‘bailout’ will do, is take the taxpayers down the ‘toilet’ with them!!

SDV,
“At unionized Costco where they earn on average $17+/hr”
You keep posting that $17+/hr figure, but according to this, it may be misleading:
“As of March 2008, non-supervisory hourly wages range from $11.00 to $19.75 in the United States and 11.00 to 21.85 in Canada.” ~ Wikipedia
Here, it states the average may be closer to $15.37/hr in the U.S. and $16.42/hr in Canada, for non-supervisory employees!! And, I’ll bet that average is based on full-time workers wages, not part-time and ‘seasonal’ workers!! Where did you get that $17+ figure?
