Wal-Mart: Always Low Wages, Always
Earlier today Wal-Mart, the largest company in the world by revenue, announced its earnings figures for the second fiscal quarter of 2008. Between April and June, the company earned a whopping $3.45 billion, and sold an almost unfathomable $101.6 billion worth of merchandise. Prospering as American consumers are forced to downgrade, Wal-Mart has been enjoying a rare window of prosperity in a declining economy.
The Walton family, which holds a majority share of the company’s stock, stand to profit greatly from Wal-Mart’s sales. The company’s stock rose $17 a share between November 2007 to June 2008, and with 43% of the company’s stock in its possession, this means the Walton family made around $29 billion off the stock price increase alone. Also standing to benefit is CEO Lee Scott, who earned a total of $59.8 million last year - 1646 times what an average Wal-Mart hourly employee earns annually.
Despite the company’s massive profits, Wal-Mart’s wages remain shamefully low. In fact, when accounting for inflation, wages for Wal-Mart’s hourly employees has actually fallen since 2004. Our newest fact sheet - “Wal-Mart: Low Wages, Always” - provides more details about the company’s efforts to keep wages low.
Wal-Mart depends on low wages to keep profits high, and the company is willing to go to extreme lengths to keep it that way. Wal-Mart’s recent anti-union propagandizing is just one such example, but it’s part of a larger, cohesive company policy to keep benefits poor and wages low. It is shameful that Wal-Mart’s profits continue to grow while it violates labor laws across the board.
There are currently 80 lawsuits pending against Wal-Mart!
Plus- recent reporting by Liza Featherstone shows how companies such as Costco can turn a profit AND pay their workers a decent wage. No more excuse, Wal-Mart!

It’d be good if you guys could make up your mind on how Walmart is doing. A couple days ago you were all happy cause they just missed their sales expectations. Now they are making huge profits because of the poor economy. Which is it? You can’t have it both ways.
PS Ken, You should try researching Walmart’s numbers from hen the economy was going well before you make statements that make you look foolish. Walmart had some very nice sales, profit, and stock increases in the mid to late 90’s when the economy was supposedly doing better than it had in years. I think that kind of ruins your theory that “what’s good for Walmart is bad for America.”

True, RDS - and the stores most of these “newcomers” are seeing for the first time are the new builds/remodels that took a few design cues from Target.
IMO, many of the new WM builds/remodels are where Target was about 5 years ago.

Yeah, tell me about it! Most people get the standard $.40 raise (even if they’re worth more than that). Some people get fifty and sixty cent raises that don’t deserve it but that’s because you are punished for being a hard worker at Wal-Mart.
Right now we have a new system (copied from Target but in a real cheap and crappy way) that is being applied to third shift where you are timed and you have to do your job within a certain time period. The main problem with this, however is that the times aren’t correct. An example of this is that I was told that I had two and a half hours to put up four rocket carts (these are wheeled carts with stock that we have to work off of now that does nothing but slow us down) and I was told that I had “54 cases” but I went and counted how much I had (and it was a quick estimate because I couldn’t count ever single case that I had) and I actually had around 188 cases (and it was probably more than this).
So, basically they are about to start penalizing (they told me this) their workers for not being able to do a job that’s impossible to do (all because some inbred quasi-stalinist’s in Arkansas decided to do this).
I’m desperately trying to get out of there. If you have any morals or sense of humanitarianism you will NOT shop at Wal-Mart to save a couple of bucks (unless you’re poor that’s the only exception to this). Wal-Mart is a disgusting, evil corporation that represents the worst aspects of capitalism. I have to stop myself from walking off the job every night.

Generic: I read on Talking Points Memo that Obama will be unveing a new logo-Buy American-Vote Obama logo tomorrow.~~~~~~Obama Camp Unveils “Buy American, Vote Obama” Campaign
By Greg Sargent - August 15, 2008,
The Obama camp is pushing a new theme in Pennsylvania tomorrow—it’s called the “Buy American, Vote Obama” campaign.
According to an Obama aide, the new effort dovetails with a renewed push by the Obama team in Pennsylvania to poke fun at John McCain’s recent claim that he would rather hear the roar of “50,000 Harleys” than the cheering of 200,000 Berliners.
As the Obama camp was quick to point out, McCain OPPOSED legislation that would have forced the U.S. government to buy American-made motorcycles.
Obama’s Pennsylvania campaign, the aide says, will be hitting the ground this weekend in around five towns around the state with stickers and flyers bearing the above “Buy American, Vote Obama” logo.
The events will feature a few dozen actual Harley riders for Obama that have been recruited for the weekend’s events.
“Harley riders aren’t typically supportive of Democratic candidates,” the aide says.
But if “Buy American, Vote Obama” catches on, it could conceivably be unveiled in other battlegrounds.

<b>Yeah bbrd… we already knew that!</b<
“...that took a few design cues from Target.
“...the new WM builds/remodels are where Target was about 5 years ago.”
Don’t look to Wal-Mart if you’re looking for innovative industry leading ideas… especially if those ideas cost Wal-Mart money to implement!
Perhaps Wal-Mart is finally getting the message that a stores shopping atmosphere translates into greater customer satisfaction. Try as it might to shake its image Wal-Mart has solidified it’s business model based on low price...I think they are finding it increasingly hard to shake that image too!
I see this scenario being played out with two local competing gas stations. The new station that just opened a few weeks ago...has been trying to whore itself in an effort to steal business from the other station across the street. At first the station that was there the longest was going head-to-head with the new station on price. Lately, however I’ve noticed that the older station now keeps it’s prices about 5 cents higher than the new station. When I stopped in and talked to the mangager he just laughed. He said, if they want to keep their prices lower all the time, that’s fine with me. He said, “I know they are barely making a profiit” We’re making money...they’re not! (on gas and fuel that is)
He’s right too! All the stations in this area pull from the same bulk suppliers. Nobody is getting a “better price.” It’s a very tight and competitive market.
So as Ken once recommended, buy all those loss leaders from Wal-Mart. Let them whore themselves. It’s will all catch up with them sooner or later. I’d prefer sooner!

...stock increases in the mid to late 90’s...
“In the mid to late 90’s” Wal-Mart was still Wal-Mart. After Sam’s death in ‘92, David Glass pushed the company and rode out Sam’s momentum. Bentonville’s growth was impressive!
It was during this time that the dreadful metamorphosis began, culminating with the ascendency of H. Lee Scott in 2000. Popping from the chest of the smiley Wal-Mart emerged the Beast of Bentonville, dripping with gore.
Stock prices, despite the boost from the poor economy, still have not returned to pre-Scott levels.

“Stock prices, despite the boost from the poor economy, still have not returned to pre-Scott levels. “
I think you said last week that the stock price wasn’t a way to measure a company now it is again. You flip flop more than a politician. Apparently you’re avoiding the posts on the other topic where I disproved your comment that “Walmart didn’t get to where they are today on 3% returns.” It’d be good if you’d stop making posts when you don’t know what you’re talking about. Walmart is still the same company it was back in the 90’s when they made that increase. They still catered to people looking for bargains, and wanted to keep their prices as low as possible.

You flip flop more than a politician.
And you misread more than a dyslexic. I said daily variations in stock prices have little bearing on a company or it’s business model.
You pro Wal-Marter are trying too hard. Relax! I slip up occasionally and then you can have a field day.
“The Bentonville Syndrome comes into play when a captive cannot escape and is isolated and threatened with unemployment, but is shown token acts of kindness by Wal-Mart. It typically takes about three or four days for the psychological shift to take hold.
A strategy of trying to keep Wal-Mart happy in order to stay employed becomes an obsessive identification with the likes and dislikes of Wal-Mart which has the result of warping your own psyche in such a way that you come to sympathize with your tormenter!”

“I don’t know who “people here” are but what I’ve been saying all along whether WMT is trading at 45 or 55, daily stock prices have little or no bearing on the company or it’s business model. “
You didn’t say daily variations you said daily stock prices. Are there really any other kind? Did companies start giving annual stock prices because I must have missed that memo. I can’t wait to see how you change the subject or explain that your definition of stock price is different from the rest of the worlds.

Obama said: “I would not have nominated Clarence Thomas. I don’t think that he … was a strong enough jurist or legal thinker at the time for that elevation. Setting aside the fact that I profoundly disagree with his interpretation of a lot of the Constitution.”
He added that he also wouldn’t have nominated Antonin Scalia, and perhaps not John Roberts, “though he assured the audience that at least they were smart enough for the job,” The Wall Street Journal noted in an editorial on Monday.
The editorial continued: “So let’s see. By the time he was nominated, Clarence Thomas had worked in the Missouri Attorney General’s office, served as an Assistant Secretary of Education, run the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and sat for a year on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, the nation’s second most prominent court.”
Obama, on the other hand, “isn’t yet four years out of the Illinois state Senate, has never held a hearing of note [with] his U.S. Senate subcommittee, and had an unremarkable record as both a ‘community organizer’ and law school lecturer,” The Journal observed.
“Justice Thomas’s judicial credentials compare favorably to Mr. Obama’s presidential résumé by any measure.”

It’s funny that lying come up in this topic since the headline is “Walmart: Always low wages always.” First of all they know it’s a lie since they complain about how much Walmart executives make in other topics. Even not including management, I am an hourly and make about twice the per capita income for my area and more than the per household income which would include businessmen and other professionals. So clearly Walmart’s wages aren’t always low. Unless above average is low.
