Wal-Mart Can’t Compete
With Wal-Mart’s domestic sales waning, CEO Lee Scott announced Wal-Mart would increase international growth. “Expect to hear more from Wal-Mart about where we’re going in emerging markets like India and China,” Scott said.
Unfortunately for Wal-Mart, those prospects look grim. Despite celebrating the approval of Wal-Mart China’s 100th store with flowery speeches from the US department of commerce secretary, Wal-Mart’s potential is dismal.
This past week, China’s online auction site, Taobao (similar to EBay), announced that its total business volume exceeded the total business volume of both Wal-Mart and French competitor Carrefour – this after only surpassing Wal-Mart’s individual volume in 2005 and then Carrefour’s in 2006. Additionally, Taobao’s 2007 profit “mainly came from daily commodities, IT, and digital products.” Add in food and Taobao would perfectly resemble a Wal-Mart Supercenter.
So what can Wal-Mart offer to differentiate themselves in this fast growing, competitive market? Uncompromising quality or superior customer service? According to recent news reports, it’s unlikely Wal-Mart is offering this much.
On Friday, January 25 news articles titled “Wal-Mart’s Hidden Secret: Goods’ Quality is Shocking”, “ Wal-Mart: Black Factories’ Good Partner; Quality Problems Exceed 43 Incidents”, ”Wal-Mart Denies Accusations of Cheating Customers”, among others all emerged.
These articles detail an inferior supply chain and a distrust of Wal-Mart Supercenters. It’s not rare for Wal-Mart to receive such press in Chinese media, but so many reports in one day seems extreme.
Perhaps a growing discontent for Wal-Mart’s exploitative and deceptive – and ultimately unsustainable business practices – play a part. Or maybe Wal-Mart simply ran out of innovation to satisfy Chinese customers. Whatever it is, Wal-Mart’s bet on the international market for the time being is merely hopeful hype.

Eventually, Wal-Mart is going to be everywhere and there will be no place left for them to go. Then what are they going to do? How will they be able to show increasing sales when that day comes, and it will come.

They keep jacking up prices to increase sales. Plus are still getting rid of higher paid associates.

Jane, the object of a capitalist company is to eliminate all the competition and then they become a monopoly.
As a monopoly they are free to run up their prices as high as they like (subject to people being able to afford them).
These days we don’t have too many monopolies, but we do have many oligopolies or shared monopolies. Good examples include cell phone firms where they all charge about the same amount for about the same level of service. Cable TV is another popular example.
There are some real niche monopolies. Unique prescription drugs are a good example. While a drug is under patent protection no one else can sell it. Some popular anti-cancer drugs which fall into this class sell for $100,000 per course of treatment. Pay or die, the ideal situation.
So don’t worry about Walmart, their rate of growth is slowing in the US (which is why they are moving into China, Mexico and Brazil), but they still have the ability to raise prices when it suits their purpose.

No need to copy and paste your message four times Vantress. If we wanted to read it again we need only look at every other blog you have posted on. You are a very redundant, broken record.
Come up with some new material. You being a ufcw member like twenty years ago when you were bagging groceries as a pimple faced teenager doesn’t prove any expertise on the matter. Get with the here and now and what is relevant!
You currently have a good paying job with Teamster representation and benefits. Be thankful for that as you could be working for far less money at your local Walmart!
By the way, YOU’RE WELCOME! You should be thanking those of us that shop at the stores your warehouse supplies instead of berating us on a daily basis for not supporting their competition. Finally get it through you thick skull. Your job does exist because of the NON-Walmart consumer!

From the Nation Labor Relations Board-
Over the past 10 years, the NLRB or its administrative law judges have determined in at least 11 cases that Wal-Mart or individual Wal-Mart stores were engaging in unfair labor practices to prevent unionization, according to the agency’s website. In that same period, both Target’s and Costco’s records appear to have remained clean. An excerpt from one of the decisions against Wal-Mart gives a sense of the extent of the violations:
The Respondent, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., its officers, agents, successors, and assigns, shall:
1. Cease and desist from
(a) Promising to remedy employee concerns in an effort to undermine support for the Union.
(b) Removing supervisors from their position in an effort to undermine support for the Union.
(c) Engaging in surveillance of the union activities of employees.
(d) Coercively interrogating employees concerning the union sympathies and support of other employees.
(e) Installing new equipment to remedy employee complaints in order to undermine support for the Union.
(f) Transferring employees into the TLE [Tire Lube and Express division] to dilute the support for the Union.
(g) Transferring employees into the TLE to remedy employee complaints about inadequate staffing in order to undermine support for the Union.
(h) Transferring employees out of the TLE in order to dilute the support for the Union.
WalMart and the UFCW
Sam Walton again on exploitation of people/labor-
Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton once said, “I pay low wages. I can take advantage of that. We’re going to be successful, but the basis is a very low-wage, low-benefit model of employment.”

The reality on WalMart behavior-
Wal-Mart’s strong-arm approach is the product of a simple cost-benefit analysis. As Thomas Cochan, a professor at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, explains, “we have a law that is no longer serving its basic objective of providing people with the ability to organize. The incentives are too weak to keep companies from violating the law if they don’t want to comply.” The National Labor Relations Board can order an employer to rehire a terminated employee and to pay back wages, but it can’t impose criminal penalties or punitive damages. This is rather like telling a bank robber that the penalty for a failed heist is being required to return the money to the bank. And Wal-Mart takes full advantage of such laxity. Store managers are equipped with 56-page pamphlets titled “The Manager’s Toolbox to Remaining Union Free,” and representatives from the “People Division” in Bentonville are flown out at a moment’s notice if there are any signs of union activity. According to a 2004 report in The Nation, stores even administer personality tests to applicants to screen out potential union sympathizers.
WalMart’s illegal union busting tactics
WalMart has poisoned its own well and will never be able to recover. The simple fact of the matter is that America will not tolerate this kind of corporate behavior as they find out about it. Therefore WalMart must play an insane game of false Public Relations to deceive the U.S. population and this will develop even more rejection and resentment of what they are doing as a business practice. The critics are not to blame or the unions or other social observers. The Bentonville ‘love of money’ psychopaths and their unChristian/unAmerican attitude in business are expressly responsible for all of the stink that surrounds WalMart. These people are Globalists at any expense and for them Christianity and the moral/ethical interests of Americans is meaningless. They are leaders in exactly what this country does not need.

SDV,
“And last year, organized labor put together two Washington-based groups: Wake Up Wal-Mart, backed by the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), and Wal-Mart Watch, supported by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).”
Sounds like the unions putting their noses in Wal-Mart’s business, I don’t think that Wal-Mart asked them to do this!! Seems this is ‘foced’ association (connection)!! Kind of like ME, coming to your home and trying to tell YOU how I want you to live and then claiming a ‘connection’ between you and me!!

Bob
IT’S THE LAW!!!!!!!!!
By your logic; if I don’t agree with a LAW it should be fine to break it, after all it was forced on me, and there fore it doesn’t really apply to me.
Our society does this all the time. After all we are a nation of laws. I don’t agree with MANY of them but I do try to obey them. I can’t pick and choose which laws I feel like obeying. WM has NO less responsibility to do the same; in fact they have a moral responsibility set the example.
You have posted on many occasions that WM has in your words “they have NOT broken any laws regarding the unions”. So that defense is ether a lie or you are just very blinded to the truth. Now, when you are faced with the facts you change your tune to the “well that law is not fair to the poor company” song and dance. Bob, you can’t have it both ways!

Big D and SDV: ABC News investigative reporter Brian Ross has an excellent story today on the web about Hillary Clinton and WalMart in relation to unions .( Lots of video clips of speeches she made while on WalMart board.)Speaking of laws, they are useless unless they are enforced. The Department of Labor under Bush’s administration has been the biggest union busting tool since Ronald Reagan busted the unions back in the early years of HIS presidency. How ironic that Reagan was a Democrat AND President of Screen Actors Guild PRIOR to becoming a Republican and union buster.)

Big D,
Please point out a site I can go to, to see the LAW that says that a union has the right to harrass a company and it’s employees without being asked by the employees for representation!! A union, is not allowed to just pick a company at random and try to unionize it, it must be sought by the employees!!
ddrb,
“How ironic that Reagan was a Democrat AND President of Screen Actors Guild PRIOR to becoming a Republican and union buster.”
Shows that people can change, once they see the “Big Picture”!!
Remember when Reagan was trying to BLUFF the Russians with ‘Star Wars’ and the Democrats kept yelling to the media, “Star Wars, it can’t be done”, kind of like they now want to give the terrorists a ‘heads up’, by telling them with a withdrawal ‘time line’, as to when they can take over in Iraq!!

How about “liberate Iraq for democracy”,yet liberal and democratic are dirty words of disparagement when used INSIDE the U.S.? The word liberty is derived from the same word as liberal-so those who impugn “liberal” are also slurring “liberty”,also. Yep,come to think of it ,OUR U.S. liberties are fewer everyday, and have been getting quite a few black eyes,to boot, from the very folks who wish to liberate OTHERS,abroad.
