Wal-Mart could see extra tax breaks in WV
Just catching up on more stories from the holiday season. This from West Virginia - a whole gaggle of new tax laws will be taking effect in the new year are designed to save businesses money and create jobs? Sounds like there must be a catch, right?
According to State Tax Commissioner Christopher Morris, both the business franchise tax and the corporate net income tax rates are being lowered under the changes. In addition, businesses can get tax credits for creating jobs that are full-time, pay at least $32,000 and offer health benefits. Companies are limited in the number of created jobs they can can receive tax credits for, but every little bit helps, right? C’mon Wal-Mart...we know West Virginia is now a combined reporting state, so you can’t pull your little tax shenanigans there anymore, so why not create a few new full-time jobs, throw in some benefits, and save a little money in the process?

I’d be curious to know what West Virginia considers, legally,to be full time. That is,is there a legal STANDARD for how many hours per week constitutes full-time?WalMart considers 34 hours a week as full time,if I’m not mistaken. If some other company(retail or otherwise) considers 40 hours a week to be full time, seems there’s an inequity there about who’s really worthy of tax credits.

ddrb,
“In addition, businesses can get tax credits for creating jobs that are full-time, pay at least $32,000 and offer health benefits.”
As the AVERAGE Wal-Mart full time employee, makes LESS than $32,000.00 a year, I don’t think any ‘new hire’ full time employee would qualify Wal-Mart for those tax credits!!

RDS: They’ll come up with something ,anything, except upping the “employees” wages. Maybe change the terminology for hourly employees to something else. But in the event employees unionize, you can believe there won’t be any doubt as to what constitutes full time employee as opposed to salaried associate.

You are right, look at Canada, all those full time employees are now constituted as UNEMPLOYED associates!! And, in most unions, salaried people are EXEMPT from the union, so maybe Wal-Mart could make EVERYONE salaried, except part-timers, then they could have 80% part-timers, NO hourly and 20% salaried!!
If you allow the system to work, things work themselves out, but, if you keep messing with it, things get MESSED up and usually end up worse!! All one has to do, is look at the government, to see how that goes!!
