Wal-Mart draws a line between the company and its stores

A story out today from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette helps to clear up some of the questions about Wal-Mart’s recent logo change. The article explains that Wal-Mart The Company will continue to use the current, hyphenated form of the logo but that Walmart The Store will use the fancy new non-hyphenated version. As if that weren’t confusing enough, the article explains that the ever popular “squiggly” will remain in the Wal-Mart cheer. Yes, questions of how to spell Wal-Mart’s name will now involve a lengthy existentialist examination.

Exactly why Wal-Mart feels the need to make this distinction - between “the company” and its stores - remains unclear. The company wanted a new look for its stores, but changing every instance of its logo might have proven too complicated. Wal-Mart is, after all, the world’s largest company. But the distinction also plays in to an issue we raised yesterday - Wal-Mart The Company is beginning to distance itself from its stores. The company’s new Marketside shops bear no mention of their Bentonville parent, and perhaps the hypen/no-hypen distinction plays in to that. Does Wal-Mart The Company exist separate from its stores? Can it ever?

‘Walmart’ new, but store’s familiar [Arkansas Democrat-Gazette]

Wal-Mart or Walmart ? That depends, the company says. With the June 30 announcement of its new, nonhyphenated store logo, “Walmart” started showing up in some of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. ’s news releases and other statements and has been appearing in its printed advertising and in-store signs since then.

The new logo is “Walmart” followed by an asterisklike symbol — the company calls it a spark — as big as the letters. The spelling itself is a throwback to the original store logo. Details about the change were outlined in the announcement statement topped by the Wal-Mart logo — with a star between Wal and Mart — that still adorns most Wal-Mart, or Walmart, stores, and the star version remains atop news releases.

Bentonville-based Wal-Mart has no intention of changing its official company name, spokesman Christi Gallagher says.

But nowadays, “Walmart” refers to the company’s U. S. stores, and storefronts eventually will reflect that change. The new logo went up on store No. 1 in central Rogers on Tuesday.

“Wal-Mart” refers to the entire company, which includes stores in 14 other nations, soon to be 15 when operations in India, with a partner, open in 2009.

Gallagher said the hyphen, dash or star used over the years will remain as the “squiggly” in the company cheer.

During the cheer, a staple of Wal-Mart gatherings, a leader has the group spell out the company’s name one letter at a time, beginning with “Give me a W.” When the cheer comes to the element that separates the “Wal” and “Mart” — “Give me a squiggly” — the cheerers render it by gyrating their hips.

Wal-Mart’s original store logo was a single word, Walmart, beginning in 1962; went to Wal-Mart in 1964; added “discount city” and “we sell for less” and “satisfaction guaranteed” in 1968; went back to simply Wal-Mart in 1981; then to Wal-Mart with the star in 1992. All versions were in capital letters.

Changing a well-known logo is a significant move for any company, and a costly one for firms the size of Wal-Mart, said Marty Neumeier, founder and president of Neutron LLC of San Francisco, a consulting firm that helps companies reorganize around brands.

The new logo will appear on thousands of stores and trucks as well as signs and other printed material.

“We’re talking millions and millions of impressions,” he said.

Neumeier said the logo has a softer, more modern feel compared with the most recent one, which he said “always struck me as somewhat nationalistic, and slightly militaristic, because of the star and the rather tough typeface.” “ To me the spark is trying to say something. Positive things, health, happiness, ” he said. If Wal-Mart is successful, he said, the symbol could eventually become like rival discounter Target Corp. ’s bull’s-eye or Apple Inc. ’s apple, instantly recognizable even without the company name. Larry DeVincenzi, a marketing consultant with SmartBrand LLC, a brand strategy firm in Reno, Nev., was less impressed. “Nobody feels like it’s a spark. It’s a glowy, yellow daisy thing that has no meaning,” DeVincenzi said.

OK you heard it here first:

I’ve been suggesting that Walmart could get out of a lot of difficulty if they spun off their stores. Using a franchise model would allow them to keep a portion of the sales revenue and let them concentrate on procurement, supply chain and product design.

All the problems with labor relations, site selection, etc. would be those of the franchisees. If a given store owner wanted to pay a higher wages or change working conditions that would be up to him. Many businesses run along this model, some keep a few stores, but this is not the primary source of revenue.

Moving to separate Walmart “the store” from Wal-mart “the holding company” may be the first step in something along these lines.

I think keeping the firm vertically integrated has been more about bragging rights than efficient management. It’s apparently important to the Waltons that they be able to strut around in their social circle. Usually this is a sign of a lack of self confidence and inferiority. How would you feel if you are just living off the creative genius of Sam and the only thing you have contributed is mean-spiritedness?

It just dawned on me that what I first percieved as a daisy or some flowery thing is actually an asterisk… And Wal*Mart seems to have trade marked it. An asterisk, as in better read the fine print… Can a company actually trade mark an internationally recognized symbol? If so, the letter “X” is Mine!

This message has been brought to you by the letter “Bb”

Funny, that didn’t cross my mind… There’s been more than one study tha the McDonalds “Golden Arches” are actually just a big set of subliminal breasts. This would make sense because that would bring thought of “Comfort” and Being Loved and of course nutrition. Now if Wal*Mart has indeed gone out and trade marked the golden a-- hole, what is subliminal the message that the are trying to convey?

On Closer inspection it’s not a trade mark, it’s a service mark. TM vs SM. So I guess they are basically saying that they service butt holes. Plus, I have it on good authority that the model used for the actual Logo was none other than Alice Walton herself. That’s why she looks so “tickled” in the photo on the museum peice.

Sarah Palin is being hailed by people in advertising (the same people who brought us the golden anus) as an excellent choice for John McCain’s running mate. They are basing their opinions, not in politics or what’s best for our country, just “WOW” factor. The only choice that could have made as much sense but was too obvious was Condi Rice, but even the Republican strategist, who are famous for taking the low IQ of their electorate for granted, had to back off from that one. If our nations elections were a game show, theyed probably do pretty well in the ratings. The unfortunate thing is that its real. I certainly wish I could change the channel.

This is from Wikipedia, pretty impressive.

“Governor Murkowski appointed Palin Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission,[20] where she served from 2003 to 2004 until resigning in protest over what she called the “lack of ethics” of fellow Alaskan Republican leaders, who ignored her whistleblowing complaints of legal violations and conflicts of interest.[21][4] After she resigned, she exposed the state Republican Party’s chairman, Randy Ruedrich, one of her fellow Oil & Gas commissioners, who was accused of doing work for the party on public time, and supplying a lobbyist with a sensitive e-mail.[22] Palin filed formal complaints against both Ruedrich and former Alaska Attorney General Gregg Renkes, who both resigned; Ruedrich paid a record $12,000 fine.[4]”

If she’s stays that bold in Washington there may not be anyone left or Congress will find a way to get rid of her.

Dave in
Saturday, August 30 at 08:47 AM

If she stays...

At this point that’s a mighty big IF!

I will say however, it is refreshing to finally find an honest Republican. Especially one that firmly believes the road to government funding is taxation.

IF Mrs. Palin were to become our next Vice President, perhaps it would help remove the label of borrow and spend Republicans.

While I would be the first one to defend out right to elect eye-candy for vice president, I think Sarah Palin’s judgement can be called into question.

She’s fought oil companies and party bosses and do-nothing bureaucrats and anyone who puts their interests before the interests of the people she swore an oath to serve."[ John McCains intro of Palin as VP.]
Palin is a former union member, and her husband is a Steelworker- will they support the Employee Free Choice Act?

Statement by United Steel Workers International president Leo W. Gerard on John McCain’s selection of Sara Palin as his running mate:

“It is important to realize that while the governor’s husband is a member of a union, this does not automatically qualify her for an on-the-job training program to become a heartbeat away from the presidency. And while her husband is one of 850,000 dues-paying members of the steelworkers union, it does nothing to absolve Sen. McCain of his long history of anti-union sentiment and anti-worker actions, including continuously pushing an anti-working family agenda that:

* Opposes giving workers the right to bargain collectively;

* Jeopardizes retirement security by privatizing social security;

* Further threatens job security by signing more job-stealing trade deals without the regard to human rights and environmental abuses; and,

* Erodes the ability of working families to secure quality health
care by taxing their employer -provided coverage for both active and retired workers.

McCain’s choice is another example of his poor judgment and his desire to play politics as usual. McCain-Palin is not a team that works for working families. The first-term governor’s record is thin and divisive. And John McCain has a life-long record of being for the rich and powerful. No union card can hide that any more than Ronald Regan’s union card did."~~~~~~~~~~~~ NOTE:Did Reagan burn his SAG card when he became President and set out to dismantle unions in America?

People, tat new logo has to do with the “star” in the name.  Sam started with Walton’s 5 and dime and later Wal-Mart with a hyphen in the name but after his passing in 1992 and their Purchasing Department moving to China...tat hyphen wus replaced with a big single STAR.

quote***In China, as elsewhere, we follow the Wal-Mart tradition of building our business one store and one customer at a time.  We strive to provide our customers with friendly service and a wide selection of quality products at Every Day Low Prices.  With each Wal-Mart store we bring advanced retail know-how to the local market. By fostering a healthy, competitive environment, we hope to constantly improve our business operations and customer service in order to contribute to the prosperity of the local economy.

Wal-Mart firmly believes in local procurement.  We recognize that by purchasing quality products, we can generate more job opportunities, support local manufacturing and boost economic development.  Over 95% of the merchandise in our stores in China is sourced locally.  We have established partnerships with nearly 20,000 suppliers in China.  At Wal-Mart, we always work with our suppliers to grow together.  In August 2007, Wal-Mart once again secured the top spot of the 2007 Supplier Satisfaction Survey conducted by Business Information of Shanghai. Additionally, Wal-Mart directly exports about US$9 billion from China every year.  The export volume by third party suppliers is also estimated to be over US$9 billion.***end quote!

Now! if there be 182 country’s making items for the world to buy and they have only 5% of the pie in China...duh! This company makes the nice people of China support their currency(yuan) by keeping it in their country working for the people there.... but with the “yuan” going up in value and the US dollar going down...all the foreign items that the American consumer buys thinking it is cheap has went up in price.

People...its all about the currency and to keep a currency strong you got to keep it floating around the country you live in so it can work for you. For the past 12 years all them US dollars are being shipped overseas to a foreign bank and with the American worker not making anything for the foreigner to buy the “we the people” have to turn to the “second” largest employer in America(Uncle Sam) to sell “we the people” debt in order to get all them dollars back!

50 years ago a foreigner would had given their left nut for a US dollar or a Hershey’s chocolate bar and today the same foreigner has got Uncle Sam and the American consumer by both all the while Hershey is moving the chocolate factory to Mexico. Wakeup! America and think “MADE IN AMERICA.”

*why do you think they are not in South Korea and Germany anymore and losinf their a!! in Japan....and with Reliance doing their thing in India...the nice people there ain’t gonna be shoppin’ at a Walmart*

America needs to wake up to the ways of D. C. and put someone in tat big white house tat has the ba!!s to get rid of the FED and put the name ‘Washington” back in tat town.

*Washington had been reelected unanimously in 1792. His decision not to seek a third term established a tradition that is now embedded in the 22d Amendment of the Constitution. In his Farewell Address of Sept. 17, 1796, he drew on the results of his varied experience, offering a guide for both present and future. He urged his compatriots to cherish the Union, support the public credit, be alert to the “insidious wiles of foreign influence,” respect the Constitution and the nation’s laws, abide by the results of elections, and eschew political parties of a sectional cast. Asserting that the United States and Europe had different interests, he declared that it “is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world,” trusting to temporary alliances for emergencies. He also warned against indulging in either habitual favoritism or habitual hostility toward particular nations, lest such attitudes should provoke or involve the country in needless wars.*

I wasn’t defending her.  No one had even said anything negative about her yet.  I just said it was impressive if it was true, and I have seen that story on other sources since which means it most likely is true.  You guys would find fault with whomever the Republicans had picked because you are Democratic liberals who think big government is the answer to everything.

“Which do you think is “better” for America?”

Neither, both taxing or borrowing, for ‘wasteful spending’, are bad for America!!  We need elected officials to be ‘fiscally prudent’ with the dollars of their constituents!!  Wasteful spending, helps nobody!!  To some of us, paying $600.00 for a $5.00 hammer, somehow sounds stupid!!

Gustav, PART 1:

It’s a Beautiful Day in NYC. This time of year is always incredible. The temperature is perfect, the sky is deep blue with hardly a cloud and a breeze that hints at the coming end of summer. I can’t help but think about similar beautiful mornings in the past. In particular one in early September in 2001. A little cooler than today, But so nice that I was literally singing to myself as I walked to the subway. I walked down the stairs and by the time I got off at my stop (a mere 10 minutes). The world had changed forever. My family and employees survived, but lost everything that we had worked years for. This didn’t happen because a building fell on us. It didn’t happen because of a lack of generosity on the part of the American People and it didn’t happen because God was mad at us (well actually I still run things over and over in my mind trying to figure out what we did to deserve it). But, no it happened because the Bush administration, FEMA, and the Small Business Administration under Senator named Snowe of Maine just didn’t “get it”.

Our little business like thousands of other’s located in the Metropolitan Area of NYC, as well as Washington DC. Saw less than 9% of the SBA/FEMA backed aid. The reason given over and over again to countless small business owner’s was a simple “rubber stamped” No proof of ability to repay. To clarify this, what they were saying was “ We can’t give you aid because your business is in trouble because of the disaster and you may not be able to pay us back”.

You may want to take a moment to ponder the irony in what I just wrote. I have, everyday for the last 7 years. “Your business can’t have the disaster aid because your business was hurt by the disaster”. This was the logic of the SBA under the Bush Administration and Headed by United States Senator Olympia J. Snowe (R) Maine. Under this administration less than 9% of the FEMA backed SBA loan aid that was budgeted was distributed to local businesses in NYC and Washington DC. At the time there were several articles written in the New York papers that the Government was in a quandary because they had all this business aid money to give out, but no businesses to give it to. I’m not making this up. So the SBA came up with the “STAR” loan program. They gave the extra (91%) of the billions of dollars in loan aid to the Banks. The banks then would figure out what to do with it. Well, if you want to know where it went, $310 Million went to Dunkin Donuts, $750K went to a BBQ place (I do love BBQ) in Austin Texas and the list goes on. (Google the NY Daily News for more info).

While all the American’s generosity was being doled out to the least needy. New York City was becoming a town of Shuttered Store Fronts and Massive Un-Employment. People’s life’s work wiped out. Small Business owners standing side by side with their former employees in the Un-Employment and Welfare Lines. I still remember the job fair held at Madison Square Garden. The lines of people running off into the distance and the near riot that ensued. I remember stopping by a workfare office and seeing former executives sitting next to ex-cons, being instructed on how to write a resume’ and to dress for a job interview. 55 year old men who had worked, built careers and paid taxes their whole lives brought down to equal ground with criminals.

Of course none of this had to happen. It didn’t have to be this way. The American people did an outstanding job coming together offering financial and emotional support! This was the result of a small group of supremely evil terrorist and then made even worse with the aid of the US Government. The American people who gave and gave some more were hornswagled. I remember a group of people traveling from New Orleans and serving some mighty fine Jambalaya to the worker’s at ground zero.

Gustav, Part 2:

New Orleans (and the Gulf Coast) then got Katrina and we as a people got to see the full degree of government incompetence on a much greater scale. It was an associated press reporter’s work on the Katrina Debacle that uncovered the STAR Loan Scandal relating to 9-11. The government had years to get its act together between 9-11 and Katrina. We all have seen what a stellar job they did.
Now we are faced with Gustav, and when I say we, I mean All of Us. The supreme Irony that the storm is due to hit at the beginning of the Republican convention will be analyzed over and over and many fingers will be pointed. Both political parties will try to capitalize on the suffering that is bound to follow the storm’s aftermath. Wal*Mart and Home Depot will be all over the News as they help deliver supplies. The Republicans will try to come off as heroes this time around. They have to, the White House is at stake. This coming disaster will be a huge boon to Big Business, Big Oil, and Politicians alike. The marketing of Gustav has already begun. If you look closely you’ll find one element missing; Small Businesses and the People that they employ. We can’t control the weather but we sure as hell can control who’s in charge of FEMA and the SBA.
Mine and my family’s hearts and prayers are with the people and small businesses along the Gulf Coast, and especially with the people of New Orleans, who need protection from the Government almost more than they need it from the Storm.

And, what part of the American Government is doing that?  CEO pay has nothing to do with the government, so stop comparing apples with oranges!!

Bobby,

“My family and employees survived, but lost everything that we had worked for years.”

Does this mean that the business ‘belonged’ to you?  Did you have NO insurance or money set back for ‘emergencies’?

“But, no it happened because the Bush administration, FEMA, and the Small Business Administration under Senator named Snowe of Maine just didn’t “get it”.”

So, you are saying, that the REASON your business failed, was Bush’s fault, right?

“No proof of ability to repay. To clarify this, what they were saying was “ We can’t give you aid because your business is in trouble because of the disaster and you may not be able to pay us back”.”

Why didn’t you have PROOF of ability to pay back?  Wasn’t your business doing that well, before this happened?  Didn’t you provide a business plan for rebuilding your business and showing that you would be able to repay?

“Small Business owners standing side by side with their former employees in the Un-Employment and Welfare Lines.....55 year old men who had worked, built careers and paid taxes their whole lives brought down to equal ground with criminals.”

So, are you saying that Unemployed and Welfare people are akin to criminals?

Have you never heard, that it is easier to ‘borrow’ money, if you HAVE money, than it is if you don’t?  Ability to repay a loan, is considered a ‘big deal’ with almost every institution that loans out money!!

Sounds like just another “I am a victim” sad story!!

BTW:  What part did Wal-Mart play in this story?

ddrb,

First, I did not ‘go out of business’ because of competition by corporate dairy producers, I went out of business, because I wanted to move out of Wisconsin to the South!!  Second, I never claimed to be a ‘victim’, voluntary or otherwise and I never expected the government to bail me out, in fact, I even refused to take the government “whole herd buyout” way out!!  If any of what you say, was my reason for ‘quitting farming’, then WHY did I move to Arkansas, when I had a ‘good’ job, outside of the farm, in Wisconsin?  Third, Wal-Mart had absolutely NOTHING to do with my decision to move to Arkansas, and other than SHOPPING there, I have had nothing to do with the Wal-Mart organization!!

You can MAKE things up to prove your “Theories’, but, that doesn’t make them so!!  If I said that YOU live next to a Wal-Mart store, so you can use it as an arguement against Wal-Mart, would that make it true?

I don’t talk Wal-Mart TRASH, you just interpret it that way!!  Also, it is a barrel of laughs each day, to read all of the comments, especially the ones that don’t make any sense!!

“YOU ARE SUCH A FAKE . I THINK YOUR DAUGHTER OR SON IN LAW WORKS FOR WALMART , and that is the real reason to leave cheese ville .”

My daughter works for Tyson Foods and I have no son-in-law, she is divorced!!  And, I and my wife are both retired, so neither of us works for, nor has ever worked for Wal-Mart!!  And, as for leaving cheeseville, have you ever been there in the winter?  Freezing temps and 3+ foot snow, was the reason I left, that and high taxes!!

“Of course another lie is that you don’t want to see wm taken over by unions by force.  WHAT DO YOU CARE . Its going to happen without force ,WATCH.”

Mainly because I am sick of seeing democracy going down the drain!!  I think people should be able to CHOOSE, whether they want to have a union or not!!  And, what exactly do you think Wal-Mart’s employees will GAIN by having a union, that they DON’T already have, except for paying union dues?  A union can’t force Wal-Mart to pay higher wages or give better benefits, that’s why they call it “bargaining’!!

Screwedby,

“And we should all pay attention to you, right RDS?”

I could care less if YOU pay any attention to me, your mind is ‘closed’, I’m only interested in people with ‘open’ minds!!

“You don’t even know the difference between a “conclusion” and a hypothesis!

Me and the dictionary!!

Conclusion: a conviction reached by reasoning, inference, etc.

Hypoyhesis: A set of assumptions provisionally accepted as a basis of reasoning, experiment, or investigation.

Conviction: A doctrine or proposition which one firmly believes.

In order to form a hypothesis, one has to conclude that their belief is based on reasoning and then they experiment or investigate, to prove that their hypothesis or conclusion was correct!!

Example, at one point in time, YOUR mind ‘concluded’ that Wal-Mart was ‘bad’, so you then set out to prove that your conclusion (hypothesis) was actually correct!!

Most people are outraged when they see the Government Giving their Tax dollars out like goodie bags at the MTV Awards… The message behind my post was that we’ve got to watch the people who are in control of that tax $$$. $310 Million to Dunkin Donuts, $90+ Billion to Haliburton and RDS wants to talk about a 5 dollar hammer for $600. He wants to know about business interuption insurance for something like 9-11. If he came to NYC with that argument he’d get his ass laughed back to the hole he seems to have crawled out of. insurance for I assume he pays taxes as we all do. I believe it was Taxation without Representation that kindled the Revolution.  Personally I can’t figure the guy out… Nor am I going to spend another ounce of energy trying. I am thrilled as I go to sleep tonight, that it looks as if New Orleans made it through Gustav Pretty OK. We’ll have to wait a while and see what the final tally is and see if they are going to REALLY Fix the flood walls down there.

Would that be the “Official RDS Dictionary?”

How many different “dictionaries” did you consult.

Try this definition:
jump to conclusions: to come to a conclusion too quickly, without sufficient thought or evidence.  Didn’t Ken warn you about that, RDS?

Most of the definitions I found for the word “conclusion,” spoke of it as an “ending point,” or “final outcome.”

Hey ddrb… NEVER Take RDS at His Word!

A few posts back ddrb, RDS told you why he left the farming business.  It wasn’t because “big business” drove him out.  It was because he didn’t like the cold and the snow.

I think that’s why they call it “a snow job.”

RDS says so many things he forgets to cover his “snowtracks”.  As far back as September 27, 2006 he gave this as the reason for leaving farming:

“It was getting harder (with a small family farm) to compete, given the price when the big corporate farms that milked cows 24/7 and kept the surplus high.” ~RDS

ScrewedbyWalMart in Anytown, America

Screwedby,

“Most of the definitions I found for the word “conclusion,” spoke of it as an “ending point,” or “final outcome.””

In the average person’s thought process, everyday, people reach conclusions and that conclusion causes them to go on to another thought, do you understand that concept?  And, the conclusion to one thought can spark a hypothesis for something else that needs another conclusion!!  Seems your mind works on such a simple level, that you can’t see, that hypothesises don’t just drop out of thin air, but, rather come from a conclusion from a previous thought!!

But, I seem to recall, that you look at the world in ‘Black and White’, so you can’t see ‘colors’ or ‘shades of gray’!!  So, we can’t expect anything but a ‘static’ responce, to a ‘dynamic’ question!!

“As far back as September 27, 2006 he gave this as the reason for leaving farming:

“It was getting harder (with a small family farm) to compete, given the price when the big corporate farms that milked cows 24/7 and kept the surplus high.” ~RDS”

Where in that statement, did you see that ‘getting harder to compete’, meant ‘leaving farming’?  I farmed for 20 years, and every year it was getting harder to compete, but, I didn’t quit!!  And, why is it, that I moved to Arkansas, when I could have just kept working at my job in Wisc. (where I had 12 years of seniority), after I quit farming?  Seems like it is YOU that is the one jumping to ‘conclusions’ now, without reasoning or investigation!!  But, the main point is, that I didn’t look for some sort of government bailout or handout, even when one was available!!

“It was because he didn’t like the cold and the snow.

I think that’s why they call it “a snow job.””

You wait and see if you like the snow and cold as you get older!!  And, when your yard is covered with 3 to 5 feet of snow and it’s 20 below zero, I’m sitting here in Arkansas laughing at all the ‘idiots’ up in Wisc., pushing their cars out of the snowbanks and ‘freezing their butts off’, with frozen fingers and toes!!  You are right, gee, why would I want to leave that?

I Have to Agree With Ken on This One!

“I’m always getting on the pro Wal-Marters for trying to ‘defend the indefensible’ but you guys… are trying to ‘do the undoable’.” ~Ken V

You’re the one who doesn’t understand certain concepts, RDS!  You never have, and probably never will.

The operative words in your last post were “thought process” (something you lack) and “reach conclusions.” How can you “reach” (or arrive at) a conclusion if you start with a “conclusion” as you stubbornly maintain?

NOW do you get it?

As we have said many times before, we don’t need to defend Wal-Mart, they are doing quite well on their own!!  You can deny it all you want, but they are still the LARGEST retailer in the world and all your efforts, havent put a DENT in their business!!

“How can you “reach” (or arrive at) a conclusion if you start with a “conclusion” as you stubbornly maintain?”

You don’t ‘reach’ a conclusion if you start with a conclusion, but the hypothesis, you start with, was based on a PRIOR conclusion!!  Example:  If you were to hypothesize that animals that live their lives soley in caves, have no eyes, that hypothesis is based on a conclusion you reached by reasoning that may well be possible!!  Otherwise, you would have NO basis for making the hypothesis in the first place!!

This is the last post I will make on the subjest, because your ‘closed’ mind only allows for one conclusion a year!!

The existence of the Anti Wal-Mart Movement has raised Wal-Mart’s cost of doing business in many areas. Site fights, law suits, advertising and lobbying costs, just to name a few, have all have increased to keep Wal-Mart’s profit pitifully low.

If you guys put a dent in their sales or profit it was a microscopic one.

If we’re having no effect, why are you here?

I’ve been doing this long enough to have ridden through a series of highs and lows, and I’m not just talking about the stock price.  It wasn’t too long ago Wal-Mart was pumping up their ‘visits-per-week’ numbers to hide sagging sales or after a poor year and disasters in Germany and South Korea, Wal-Mart was lucky to see any profit at all.

What goes around comes around, but if you look at the charts, measuring whatever metric you want, Wal-Mart is becoming less and less efficient. It is taking more people selling more merchandise in more places to reap a relatively small profit.

“There are a lot of issues here, but what they add up to is the end of the age of Wal-Mart,” contends Richard Hastings, a senior analyst for the retail rating agency Bernard Sands. “The glory days are over.”

I’m proud of the role, however “microscopic”, the Anti Wal-Mart Movement has played in this decline.

.................

this dream is tired;

this whithered soul.

.....................

(and the backdrop is on the screen; a humvee in the desert; a trooper with eye protection rounded in dust).

...................

(band kicks in quiet - mostly bass - drums - guitar;

the tympanist chimes in - solely and solitary - yet perfect);

Bruce Springsteen looks at the band;

Listens;

And turns towards the audience.

.....................

...................

and continues.

............................

Tired and weary ...........

A weary soul;

Friends forgotten.

Friends forgotten.

........

On this path;

this weary soul.

Torn and tattered.

This weary soul.

................

(the song continues - for a moment).

(the words cannot be heard;

Bruce voice fades).

.................

The song ends .............

brrrrmp bump bump;

brrrrmp bump bump;

(that’s the only thing audible;

and also fades).

.............

And the lights go out.

Bruce’s voice comes on now - close to the end of the song-

strong - and youthful.

I dream of sunshine -

I dream of home;

This soul is weary;

Tattered and torn.”.

Here’s the ending part of the song;

where Springsteens voice starts strong (then fades);

“And soon this day;

these nightmares made;

Let Rivers Run ............

Let Rivers Run.

(strong voice now)

Let Rivers Run

(complacent now)

Let Rivers Run

.......................

(even more complacent now);

“Let Rivers Run ..............

(resigned now) .......

“Let Rivers Run.”.

“The best times of US growth for Walmart (WMT) are behind them.”

But the reason they gave for this was market saturation.  Was the plan of the antiWalmart movement to let Walmart get so many stores that they started to run out of places to expand?  If so they did an excellent job.

“Wal-Mart is becoming less and less efficient. It is taking more people selling more merchandise in more places to reap a relatively small profit. “
What are you basing that on?  I’ve proved over and over again that their profit margin is the same that it has always been.  The same store sales have been up just about every month if not every month since the company started.  I’m not sure what other possible number you could use to prove your point.

Well,
I’m torn… I am really tired of taking the extra key stroke to put the “*” in Wal*Mart. So I started using Walmart. Much less time waisted. Then after hearing that it’s not a flower, asteriks, but in fact a butt hole, I’m sort of the opinion that everone should use it. Any advice?
Also when it comes to doing business with Wal*Mart, always use “protection”

I’ve proved over and over again that their profit margin is the same that it has always been.

All you’ve proven, Dave, is like most pro Wal-Marters, your view is severely limited.  Which ‘same’ are we talking about?

1989 The giant (Wal-Mart) had already passed Kmart as the profit leader back in 1989, when Kmart had suffered an 8.2% drop in profits and Wal-Mart’s profits had surged by 16% over the previous year.

Or....

2006 The chain said profit fell 26 percent in the fiscal second quarter after it pulled out of Germany, where it had struggled for years.

If you look back at Wal-Mart’s numbers pre Lee Scott you will actually see profit margins greater than 3.6%.

Wal-Mart is the number 1 corporation in the world in respect to revenues, but it is number 67 in profitability.

Incidentally, on a day when the Dow Jones is down and the rest of the retail sector is down, Wal-Mart is up!. Further proof that....

What’s good for Wal-Mart is BAD for America!

I showed you the profit margin when Sam was still running in the 70’s and 80’s and it was still only in the 3% range.  If you want to go to just before he took over the profit margin in 1999 was 3.4% and 1998 was 3.12%.  Also the 16% wasn’t profit margin it was profit increase which last year it was still 13% profit increase which isn’t that far off of the 16%, but profit increase has very little to do with what you were talking about since your statment was that Walmart had to do more to make what they were, and profit increase doesn’t take that into account.

Since Wal-Mart’s profit margin is so razor thin, variations of 16% up and 26% down are substantial. I realize the numbers are pitifully small but swings within the 2-4% range cannot be considered “the same”.

Wal-Mart’s core business model and value proposition requires perpetual cost reductions for lower prices, higher volume and increased velocity to achieve profitable growth.

Problem #1: for Wal-Mart: over time, they cannot keep cost squeezing their vendors’ margins to death; and, problem #2: the percentage of their total business in groceries keeps increasing faster than their other categories, and groceries yield razor thin operating margins of 1-2% vs. their current overall margin of about 5%, (which compared to Target’s 2005 operating margin of 15% in the third quarter, seems paltry).

No, problem, huh, Dave? Should a combination of factors drive Wal-Mart’s profit margin into the 1-2% bracket, we can still consider it the same.

It would be good if you could remember any numbers that are posted.  The numbers since Lee Scott took over are higher than they were in the years before he took over.  The average margin since he started is 3.55% which is higher than either of the two years before he took over, and during that time the percent of Walmart’s that were supercenter went from 28.5% to 71.6% so the margin should have gone down according to your “expert”, but instead they improved.  Also his numbers are off since I have checked half the years that Walmart has been in existence and have yet to find a margin that broke 4% let alone hit 5%.  Also Target’s margin for the last two years is only in the mid 4% range, which is no where near 15%.  That quarter was probably one where Target sold off something or he just made up the number because in 2005 Target’s margin was 4.7%.  So either the rest of the year was really bad or that number is way off.

P.S. IF Mrs. Palin were to become our next Vice President, perhaps it would help remove the label of borrow and spend Republicans.

Boy, is my face red! I couldn’t have been more wrong! Mea culpa!, my bad, a thousand pardons.*

During her term in office, Palin cut property taxes and other small taxes on business. But as the Anchorage Daily News points out, “She wasn’t doing this by shrinking government.” During her tenure, the budget of Wasilla (population 5,469 in 2000) “apart from capital projects and debt, rose from $3.9 million in fiscal 1996 to $5.8 million.
Palin also successfully pushed through a sales tax increase in Wasilla, which went to fund a $15 million sports complex.

However, a land dispute over the sight of the complex led to “years of legal wrangling” and cost Wasilla almost $1.7 million, “a lot more than the roughly $125,000 the city would have paid in 1998 if it had closed the deal to buy the property outright.” Wasilla is still facing budget shortfalls from the case today.

When Palin left office in 2002, Wasilla had “racked up nearly $20 million in long term debt” or roughly $3,000 of debt per resident.

It turns out Sarah Palin should fit right in with McSame and the Washiongton Republicans.

“Another day of bad economic news for the country and good news for Wal-Mart because....”

The Dow and S&P;were up and oil was down.  I’m not sure how you how that was a day of bad economic news.

Dave in
Friday, September 05 at 07:44 PM

I’m not sure how you how that was a day of bad economic news.

I’m not sure how to break this to you, Dave, but there is more to the US economy than the Dow Jones Average.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank President Janet Yellen said on Friday that an unexpected jump in the August unemployment rate highlights the risk of a vicious cycle of weakness locking into place for the U.S. economy.

Yellen said the U.S. economy could face “a deepening of the adverse feedback loop” that she has been warning of for most of 2008: more joblessness causing more mortgage defaults, tighter credit conditions and further downward pressure on activity and employment.

“This kind of process represents a downside risk for the economy, and today’s jump in the unemployment rate highlights that risk,” she said.

Since you still have a job, Dave, you probably don’t consider “today’s jump in the unemployment rate” bad news.

Or this:

The rate of U.S. home mortgages overdue or in foreclosure rose again in the second quarter as housing markets weakened, particularly in California and Florida, and more borrowers defaulted on so-called prime loans.

Among mortgages on one- to four-family homes, 9.16% were at least a month overdue or in the foreclosure process in the second quarter, according to the latest survey by the Mortgage Bankers Association, a trade group. That is up from 6.52% a year earlier and is the highest level since the MBA began such surveys 39 years ago.

I can’t find any good news in there either.

You must get tired lugging that huge brain around, Dave.

I realize that there was some bad news for the economy, but if you say that Walmart’s stock is up because “whats good for Walmart is bad for America” then you would have to say the same for the Dow and the S&P;since they were up as well, as were Target and Costco.  So according to your reasoning what is good for the Dow, S&P;, Walmart, Target, and Costco is bad for America which really doesn’t make sense since generally the stock market does better when the economy is running better.

Saying it was a “day of bad news” implies that all the economic news was bad, and this was not the case since oil was down and many stocks were up. Some might consider that to be good economic news thus not making it a “day of bad news”, but instead a day with some good news and some bad news in which you would expect the market to be mixed like it was.
