Wal-Mart Growth
Thomas Holmes, a professor of economics at the University of Minnesota, has assembled this presentation, which shows Wal-Mart store openings in the United States from 1962 to 2004. The images accompany a working paper titled “The Diffusion of Wal-Mart and Economies of Density” (PDF).
We’ve included an animated version of the movie below. Special thanks to The Box Tank and Thomas Holmes.

I bet if oncologists plotted the growth of some of the more virulent forms of cancer cells they find in patients, it would look pretty similar to the spread of Wal-Marts across America.

This is like how I envision “The Empire” expanding in Star Wars. Does anybody see in simalarity between Sam Walton and Darth Vader?

I think it looks more like the spread of a very strong and successful company.

If this alleged bird flu spreads like this, we are in trouble.

I notice that Walmart is not evenly represented in all areas. They only have stores where there are people.

Paul,
You are correct. There are a few people who live in the area of the Grand Canyon that do not have a store. I can’t believe that WM hasn’t constructed a supercenter there yet...OOPS I just gave them a lead…

wal-mart in my opinion is one of the reasons our country is on the decline. if you look at a town where a walmart has just gone in the welfare rate rises. why you might ask because they smash all the littler grocery and convienience stores and don’t pay their employees very much I hate wal mart and hope they are gone in ten years

Billy, you are ignorant in your claims....
“if you look at a town where a walmart has just gone in the welfare rate rises.”
Where did you get this info? I would like to read it.
“they smash all the littler grocery and convienience stores”
Again, you must have examples of this, right?
“don’t pay their employees very much”
Ummm....Wal-Mart pays more for the same job than other retailers in any area. If you have proof to the opposite, please let me know where. Thanks. Just cal up your local wal-Mart and ask what their starting wage is, and then call up any other retailer and ask them....that’ll give you your answer....

AT LAST!
At last...the truth about <strong Big T in Rogers, AR!</strong> He says: “I am a supplier and I love my job!”
I think what he probably means is that he likes going to the bank after he gets his checks from Wal-Mart. I wonder how much you’d “love your job” Big T, if Wal-Mart told you that you need to shave .10 or .20 cents off of every unit you supply to them, or else they will do business with one of your competitors? Or what if Wal-Mart came to you and demanded that you start to package whatever it is that you supply in a way that you’ve never packaged before? Then let’s suppose that you are so hungry for Wal-Mart’s business, you meet their demand and spend thousands of dollars working on new packaging exclusively for Wal-Mart, but are then told by Wal-Mart that they have found someone to do it cheaper.
Would you STILL “love your job?”

Did anyone actually read the study? It isn’t exactly what I would call “anti-Wal-Mart.”
