Wal-Mart Heiress Returns College Diploma
From the Associated Press:
Elizabeth Paige Laurie’s name was on a sports arena when a former University of Southern California roommate alleged the Wal-Mart heiress paid her $20,000 to do her homework. Now it isn’t even on a USC diploma.
Laurie, the granddaughter of Wal-Mart co-founder Bud Walton, has returned her degree, nearly a year after Elena Martinez told ABC’s ‘’20/20’’ that she had written term papers and done assignments for Laurie for 3 1/2 years.
‘’Paige Laurie voluntarily has surrendered her degree and returned her diploma to the university. She is not a graduate of USC,’’ the school said in a statement dated Sept. 30 but not widely disseminated until the school newspaper wrote about it late last week. ‘’This concludes the university’s review of the allegations concerning Ms. Laurie.’’
USC spokesman James Grant said Wednesday the university had no further comment. Laurie had been given a bachelor’s degree by the USC Annenberg School for Communication in May 2004.
After the homework allegations surfaced last November, the University of Missouri changed the name of what was then Paige Sports Arena. Laurie’s billionaire parents, Bill and Nancy Laurie, had received naming rights in exchange for donating $25 million toward the building’s construction. Nancy Laurie is Walton’s daughter.
A call seeking comment from Bill Laurie at his Paige Sports Entertainment company was not immediately returned. The family has repeatedly declined to comment on the cheating allegation.
Martinez has an unlisted phone number and could not be reached for comment.
At the time of the ‘’20/20’’ broadcast, Martinez said she dropped out of USC because she couldn’t afford the tuition. She said she learned a great deal by doing Laurie’s class work.

Okay, we’re attacking the lucky sperm club, are we? Fine. Teddy Kennedy was thrown out of HARVARD law school for poor grades. How do you get kicked out of Harvard when your name is Kennedy? Of course, Teddy also killed a woman, left the scene of the accident, avoided any charges and was elected to the Senate. And his family’s fortune is based strictly on Prohibition-era bootlegging, illegal wire services, illegal gambling and stock fraud. Old Joseph Kennedy was mobbed up and he wasn’t ashamed of how he came by his fortune. It bought the family 3 Senators and a President. Should they give back their titles because their fortune is based on ill-gotten gains? If they tried to make their fortune that way today, all Kennedy wealth would be seized and the family would be indicted and convicted under the RICO Act.
How’s that for spoiled little brats who have shamed us?

Should I never stay at a Hilton hotel because Paris Hilton made her career as a porn star?
What does this girl, so far removed from Wal-Mart, have to do with Wal-Mart?
The UFCW is getting desperate. Pretty soon, they will be tracking down someone who once heard Rob Walton say that he had gas once when he was 6 years old.

Right on the money about the Kennedy family Nick. However you forgot to mention an additional fact. The Kennedy family was & is very active with donations sending millions to Ireland, funding the terrorism involved with the Catholic/Protestant wars. This is a family heavily involved in U.S. politics, funding terrorist acts abroad? hmm! Who/whom should the U.S. public be weary of? Talk about a bunch of Liberal hipocrites, Kennedy is the true definition!

Whoa, this isn’t about Ted Kennedy, the IRA, bootleggers, conservatives, or RICO. Take off your tin foil hat!
Here’s another fun Walton family story from The Smoking Gun:
Alice Walton, the Wal-Mart heir worth $6 billion, might want to shell out some of that dough for a chauffeur. The 48-year-old Arkansas woman was arrested in late-January on drunken driving charges after her Toyota ran off a road and hit a gas meter. Walton suffered a broken nose when her face greeted the steering wheel. An unruly Walton, the daughter of late Wal-Mart boss Sam Walton, refused to take a blood-alcohol test and, according to these police reports, asked officers, “You know who I am, don’t you? You know my last name?”

There goes Nick, having nothing to say. He’s been reduced to grasping for straws defending his beloved Wal-Mart - dragging out ole Teddy Kennedy to make his point.
And GI Joe is right behind Nick…

Jeb and Ben. You missed Nick’s point. It happens in the best of family and has nothing to do with Walmart as a coorporation. It is just more mud slinging by walmart watch. Just throw something on the wall and see if it sticks.
If Larie was making outstanding grades on her own, walmart watch would find a way to criticize Walmart for that.
How many walmart watch or union leader’s children have been arrested for doing something illegal or stupid? Lets all get together and see if we can list some. Well there was Jimmie Hoffa to start with.

Hey David, this isn’t some kid soaping the neighbors’ windows. Daddy’s little girl paid someone else $20,000 to do her homework, while she partied in West Hollywood. No one is calling for her imprisonment, but what she did was unethical. I guess the bad apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Jeb - “I guess the bad apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. “
It has fallen far from the tree. Sam Walton was an honest man and a straight shooter who would not have done such a thing. Unfortunately, the pampered children of the rich often turn out to be terrible human beings (the Kennedy clan is rife with these, from Ted to that rapist whose name I forget).
How about looking at some “impropriety” that matters?

The UFCW, which runs WalMartWatch, was caught rigging an election. So much for claims of democracy for workers.
“The suit, filed in U.S. District Court, alleges the election was illegal because it denied some members the right to vote and required some to vote in the presence of union officials”

Jeb,
The AFL-CIO spent $100 million in union dues to defeat President Bush. They did not succeed. Is it not unethical to force workers to join a union, force them to pay dues and force them to watch as you spend their money on political causes with which they are not in agreement? Not to mention the union golf courses and country clubs (Linden Hall?). Let’s not forget the more than 200 UFCW employees who earn more than $200,000 per year and the kickbacks to the people who really run the unions (hint hint).
Would any of that be “unethical”?

This is about an heir to the Wal-Mart fortune who was too lazy or dumb to do her classwork. We understand why you want to change the subject to unions, but they didn’t make her cheat and didn’t make her former roommate turn her in.

The reason we talk about unions, is that is what walmart watch is all about. You should feel deceived, because they act like they are just trying to make a better world. Their only objective is to unionize Walmart.

I find this whole thing pathetic. First of all, a spoiled brat PAYING someone else to do her homework shouldn’t surprise anyone.. Second, Wal-Mart should be doing the right thing and pay their employees for the hard work they do!! Unions have nothing to do with it.

Jeb,
The Wal-Mart Brat got what she deserved. After being caught she either voluntarily turned in her diploma or was stripped of it. On the same side of the coin I would like to see Kennedy prosecuted for what he has done. (Involuntary manslaughter would be a good start)
Martin Luther King was found to have some plagiarism problems with his thesis for his Doctorate degree at Boston University, which is also cheating and grounds for stripping of the degree, all that happened in his case is that he was given a Honorary Doctorate degree instead. ( probably while he partied & cheated on his wife!)
You got it all wrong Jeb,! G.I. Joe is for justice and equality for all! Lets go back and give the Kennedy’s & Kings the same Justice the Wal-Mart Brat got.
Yes, G.I. Joe did serve this country for more than two decades. Did YOU? or did you run to Canada with the Clintons, Maybe hide under Hilarys skirt?
David,
I think Jeb got Nicks point, he just did the liberal, tip toe through the tulips, around it.

Although Bill Clinton did let the United States and South Vietnam down during the war, he did not go to Canada. As for hiding under Hillary’s skirt, I think that is the best place in the world to hide from Bill Clinton. No way he’s going anywhere near there.

To All-
If you have no idea what you’re talking about then please do us a favor and shut it! Especially you, Vet, stick to talking about guns, beer, Nascar, Bush, hating black people and everything else that you idiots in Texas know about…
The heiress of Wal-Mart got what she deserved, unfortunately, there are so many like her who have never been caught. As a recent graduate from a prestigious university, I saw rich kids cheat all the time, often bribing other students to do their work, like Ms. Wal-Mart did, with mommy and daddy’s money. It’s sad, but it happens all the time and in some of the best schools. However, how can we really fault these kids? Look at our president. He was accepted into one of the best schools in the country with a C average. Throughout his life he has gotten ahead on his daddy’s name and his dollar, so why should’nt the Wal-Mart heiress or Paris Hilton or the Bush twins behave in a similar fashion. It seems as if colleges today care more about the size of your parents’ wallet than they do about your grades. The tragic part of this entire story is that the girl who should have received her diploma (Martinez) couldn’t afford to.
