Wal-Mart makes it to “Worst Person in the World List” for delay on Shank family payment

Wal-Mart made it to Keith Olbermann’s “Worst Person in the World” last night for its slow response in the case of Jim and Debbie Shank. Despite Wal-Mart’s recalcitrance, the case is once again moving forward and the trust in question should be transferred to Jim Shank soon.

Interesting to note: Wal-Mart narrowly missed the number two spot on Olbermann’s list, losing by a narrow margin to a lobbyist for the military dictatorship of Myanmar, which Olbermann describes as a government “currently blocking relief aid to its own citizens devastated after last week’s cyclones.” We figure it was a close race.

It’s amazing that Walmart taking a whole month to return money to the Shanks ranks up with dictators that let their people starve because they’re too proud and controlling to take aid, and rank ahead of many warlords in Africa that kill their people.  It kind of takes away all of Olbermann’s credibility since I think most people consider killing people worse than holding money for a month, most likely because of legal red tape.

It’s amazing that you pro Wal-Mart types don’t have a clue about image, public relations or the import of perception, Dave.

I also find it amazing that Lee Scott pays millions and millions of dollars for damage control and still there’s no one with the cajones to say:

“Hey, this could develop into a mess! We need to clean this up quickly.”

Arrogance or stupidity?

“There are a lot of issues here, but what they add up to is the end of the age of Wal-Mart,” contends Richard Hastings, a senior analyst for the retail rating agency Bernard Sands. “The glory days are over.”

Ken V,

““Hey, this could develop into a mess! We need to clean this up quickly."”

When dealing with the U.S. legal system, a month could be ‘quickly’!!  I have heard about cases, where a person serving time in prison, who was later proved to be innocent, was kept in prison for another 3 months, before being released, paperwork and legal procedure (red tape)!!

...since I think most people consider killing people worse than holding money for a month, most likely because of legal red tape.

I think the current situation in Myanmar (Burma) is far, far worse than the Shanks/Wal-Mart tiff.

For you socially-minded activists on this forum - where’s the outrage on that?

...a month could be ‘quickly’!!

You’re telling me that no one in Bentonville could see the negative implications of the Shanks affain until it was deep into the legal system?

Or Sean Thornton?

That’s why I have to ask: Arrogance or stupidity?

Probably posted on:  The current situation in Myanmar (Burma) Website.

Ken V,

“You’re telling me that no one in Bentonville could see the negative implications of the Shanks affain until it was deep into the legal system?”

Almost ALL lawsuits, have a ‘negative implication’ on the person or company being sued!!  Do all the people suing Wal-Mart, NOT see the ‘negative implications’ their suits have on the company?  Wal-Mart, was looking out for their employees healthcare fund, don’t those employees deserve as much consideration as 1 single employee, who caused her own problems, through her ‘negligent’ actions?

So are you saying that keeping $300,000 that is rightfully yours instead of giving it to a family is worse than murdering innocent people?

Cute, Dave, but that ain’t gonna fly!

What I am saying is “keeping $300,000 that is rightfully yours instead of giving it to a family” may turn out to be very expensive in terms of negative publicity.

You can talk about “murdering innocent people” all you want, Dave. I’m talking about bad business decisions.

They did beat projections for last quarter despite all the negative publicity from this, so maybe it wasn’t that bad of a business decision after all.  I think most people are smart enough to realize that most of the negative publicity from this was just idiot reporters grandstanding and antiWalmart union people trying to nitpick.

It’s no wonder you pro Wal-Marters require so much government subsistence. You don’t know the first thing about running a business in a true “free market”.

Tell me, Dave, how good would wal-Mart’s sales for this quarter have been without the Shanks/Thornton stink?
We’ll just never know, will we?

Somehow I knew that would be your comeback, but your theory that this bad press has affected their sales is not provable at all.  For all you know no sales were lost because of this, and it is quite likely that very few were lost since they had better increases that a lot of their competitors.  Supposedly all these negative stories had been slowly destroying Walmart’s sales, yet they have been gowing their sales faster than their competitors.  You guys have no basis for saying that Walmart is being hurt by your nonsense yet you say it anyway because it makes you feel better about wasting your time trying destroy a company.

...growing their sales faster than their competitors...

Apparently you have facts and figures at your fingertips. Would you mine sharing them? I find bean counting tedious but I do know the percentage of profit from sales is declining.

For the first quarter Walmart posted a 10.2% sales increase with a comp of 2.9% without fuel.  Target had 5% and -.7% for the first quarter.  Sears hasn’t released theirs yet, but since their comp sales have been declining for the last several years it is doubtful that they changed that trend.
