Wal-Mart Partners with SAP On New Financial Systems

Wal-Mart has long been heralded as a leader in information technology. The company’s complex inventory tracking and employee scheduling systems have helped the retailer earn its record profits. It’s surprising, then, that the retailer announced today plans to outsources its financial systems.

The news comes several months after Wal-Mart was deemed “behind the curve” with its financial technology. A 2007 article from CIO.com blames Wal-Mart’s outdated information system for the company’s failure in South Korea and Germany, as well as the retailer’s past financial problems.

SAP is the lucky company tapped to take over the retail giant’s IT needs. Optimal Solutions focuses on what this means for SAP, noting that the deal will inevitably earn the systems company hundreds of millions of dollars, and not just from Wal-Mart:

This about face on packaged software represents a double win for SAP, for where the mighty Wal-Mart goes, other retailers are sure to follow.

And the process won’t be cheap. The cost of moving Wal-Mart’s massive databases promises to be expensive, and the notoriously-stingy company has decided to go ahead with the shift despite the cost. Information Age notes that the system won’t become profitable for several years. And though it’s increasingly clear that Wal-Mart’s systems need an upgrade, experts still debate the benefits of companies like SAP.

What will this mean for Wal-Mart’s other in-house systems? Will RFID soon become outmoded and cumbersome to replace.

Wal-Mart launches global IT system [Financial Times]

Walmart may not have the expertise to develop a new IT system, in addition it may have trouble attracting workers. Unlike sales clerks IT workers tend to be better educated and concerned about their perks and working conditions.

I’m sure prospective employees in IT are well aware of the issues about Walmart and would think twice about working there. Walmart has outsourced advertising, PR, marketing and legal work to some extent as well - with mixed results.

I’ve long wondered why they continue to hold on to the stores, a partial franchise operation as is done by McDonald’s and other fast food chains would offload staffing issues and allow Walmart to focus on supply chain and purchasing where they seem to not be subject to as much criticism (or notice).

I think their over expansion is fueled by a desire of the Walton’s to be able to brag that they are the “biggest”. They have expanded past the point where economies of scale improve efficiency.

You must be naive to think a WM IT wonk and a store-level part-timer have similar pay, etc. - it has long been one of the gripes of the unions sponsoring these websites that store managers and Home Office staffers make far more than the average in-store part-timer.

I’ve long wondered why they continue to hold on to the stores, a partial franchise operation as is done by McDonald’s and other fast food chains would offload staffing issues and allow Walmart to focus on supply chain and purchasing where they seem to not be subject to as much criticism (or notice).

In your lifetime, do you recall any large format stores/grocery chains ever running franchise operations?

I’m afraid that concept went kaput around the time TG&Y;and Ben Franklin stores went into the history books (they became too expensive for any single operator to maintain).

I think their over expansion is fueled by a desire of the Walton’s to be able to brag that they are the “biggest”. They have expanded past the point where economies of scale improve efficiency.

A matter of your opinion, I suppose…

Don’t you just find it laughable, to see people giving the Number 1 retailer advice on how to run their bussiness?  Kind of like the guys at the sports bar yelling at the T.V., telling the quarterback how he could do it better, if he did it their way!!  If these guys are so knowledgable on how to run a successful business, why aren’t they doing it themselves?  Look at Ken V., he said he used to own a tavern, I think the key words here, are, USED TO, instead of STILL DO!!  It’s just a matter of a bunch of losers telling the winners, how to win!!

BTW:  Wonder what happened with all those embarrassing videos that were supposed to make Wal-Mart look bad?  Hven’t heard a thing about them since the ‘in drag’ ones were shown!!

Some folks see the Beast all at once. Something happens that rips the smiley-face mask off and the ugliness is revealed. Others slowly gain a perspective on the negatives of Wal-Mart. The Beast reveals himself in stages.

All of the lies you just told about me, show how you like to twist the truth!!  For example “Kicked out of the TEAMSTERS”, when a person ‘withdraws’ from a union, to take another job in a different city, does not mean they got ‘kicked out’!!

Also, I think that the fact that I was able to RETIRE at age 60, shows that all of the other things you said, are PURE B.S., as is most of what you say here!!  The only true thing you said, was getting kicked off the WakeUpWalMart web site, but that is not unusual for a person who isn’t anti Wal-Mart!!

When a person has nothing useful to say they turn instead to attacking the commentator.

I’m so flattered that you condescend to comment on my remarks.

I’ve had 40+ years of experience working on big IT projects, what’s yours? IBM has shifted from making stuff to selling IT services. Oracle and SAP have also moved from selling software to designing and managing projects using their software. This model wouldn’t work if big firms didn’t think it was more efficient to buy IT services instead of developing them in house.

You guys seem to have some sort of verbal diarrhea which makes you continually comment on anything that comes along. As the old adage has it:

Better to be thought a fool by keeping quiet that to prove it by speaking up.

None of you ever offer a shred of evidence for anything, just your opinions. Nobody really cares what you think. If you have some actual information about a subject let’s hear it.

Ahem - I didn’t view my “commentary on the commentary” as any form of attack on you—in fact, your civility had been what once distinguished you from everyone else, here.

Of course, in the beginning, we all know being a “nice guy” doesn’t sit very well with Mr. Screwed and his minions, so they did what they do best—they turned on you (as they do to everyone they deem as “suspect").

You then tweaked your viewpoint a little more to gain favor with everyone, and now, everything is gravy…

For the record, I’m not disputing/downplaying your experience/expertise in the IT field—I just found it a little odd that you would compare someone working in Wal-Mart IT to the average part-time, in-store associate (better-known as the unions’ poster child).

Guess Mr. Screwed must’ve really gotten to you, after all…

Ignorance can be cured by knowledge.
Willful ignorance leads others to frustration.

I’m always willing to point those lacking information to appropriate sources.

But every once in awhile I lose patience with the willfully ignorant and reply to them. I usually regret this.

I don’t know what either side gets out of name calling and insults, but it seems to be the norm on many blog sites. Perhaps insulting people anonymously provides an outlet for the timid. Personally I think if you don’t have the willingness to identify yourself and stand behind your remarks then they should not be highly regarded by others.

I exempt those who have to remain anonymous to protect their careers or for other similar reasons.

What is SAP?
SAP, started in 1972 by five former IBM employees in Mannheim, Germany, states that it is the world’s largest inter-enterprise software company and the world’s fourth-largest independent software supplier, overall.
The original name for SAP was German: Systeme, Anwendungen, Produkte, German for “Systems Applications and Products.” The original SAP idea was to provide customers with the ability to interact with a common corporate database for a comprehensive range of applications. Gradually, the applications have been assembled and today many corporations, including IBM and Microsoft, are using SAP products to run their own businesses.

SAP applications, built around their latest R/3 system, provide the capability to manage financial, asset, and cost accounting, production operations and materials, personnel, plants, and archived documents. The R/3 system runs on a number of platforms including Windows 2000 and uses the client/server model. The latest version of R/3 includes a comprehensive Internet-enabled package.

SAP has recently recast its product offerings under a comprehensive Web interface, called mySAP.com, and added new e-business applications, including customer relationship management (CRM) and supply chain management (SCM).

There is a new program to connect personal health records to many sources.WalMart is a founding member. Its called Dossia. Whether or not the SAP system will be used,I do not know. But with WalMart opening their own health care clinics, I thought this might be of interest~~~~~~~~:About the Dossia Founders Group The Dossia Founders Group is a consortium of large employers united in their goal of providing employees, their dependents, retirees and others in their communities with an independent, lifelong health record.

Dossia founders are funding Dossia, an independent secure, non-profit infrastructure for gathering and securely storing information for lifelong health records.

At the request of employees and other eligible individuals, Dossia gathers health data from multiple sources.

Employee participation as a Dossia user is completely voluntary and individuals have complete control over who sees their information.

Once gathered and securely stored in a decentralized database, the health information is continually updated and is available to individuals for life even if they change employers, insurers, or doctors.

The Dossia Founders Group includes AT&T;, Applied Materials, BP America, Inc., Cardinal Health, Intel Corporation, Pitney Bowes, sanofi-aventis and Wal-Mart.

bbrd: We’ve had this dialog before:------------------------:  “Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the nation’s largest retailer, is eyeing the Arizona market and looking to partner with local hospitals and health systems to run mini clinics in its stores........” Now,from what I understand, these clinics will be partnerships between WalMart and hospital systems. Has anyone considered privacy issues? That is,private health information would be theoretically become available to WalMart’s database? I have not heard this issue discussed, but IMHO, that’s WAY more than ANY retailer NEEDS to know.

I wouldn’t sweat it, folks—ddrb suffers from a type paranoia that is typical of the anti-WM crowd.

I think not.

bbrd in

bbrd: Is WalMart a legal partner to those banks? NO! THAT"S the difference. My understanding is that the clinics that recently closed in the WalMarts were merely leased out. They were independent contractors. Kinda like the banks. These NEW clinics will be a PARTNERSHIP between WalMart and hospitals. THAT’S a BIG difference,in my books.

Wal-Mart Plans To Open 400 Health Clinics By 2010Wal-Mart has announced a plan to open hundreds of in-store medical clinics within the next two years, aiming to have 400 clinics up and running by 2010.

The announcement comes on the heels of the overnight closing of the prominent Wal-Mart in-store clinic CheckUps, which literally closed so suddenly not even its employees knew not to come into work. Those 23 CheckUps that shut their doors represented nearly one third of Wal-Mart’s current in-store clinics.

The CheckUps debacle apparently was caused by a startup company that couldn’t bring in enough revenue quickly enough to cover its costs. It’ll be interesting to see how Wal-Mart addresses this in the future - obviously it would be in Wal-Mart’s best interest this time around to do a little homework and partner with companies it knows will succeed.

The story, out of Phoenix, reported several Phoenix are hospitals were reluctant to discuss the issue.

Wal-Mart to open 400 health clinics nationally by year 2010 [Phoenix Business Journal]

Grocery, drug and retail chains are expanding to offer in-store medical clinics as uninsured patients with common illnesses clog Valley emergency rooms.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the nation’s largest retailer, is eyeing the Arizona market and looking to partner with local hospitals and health systems to run mini clinics in its stores.

“We want to provide a point of entry into the health care system for people who are uninsured and underinsured,” said Daniel Morales, director of communications for Wal-Mart’s Southwest region.

The Bentonville, Ark.-based chain plans to open 400 walk-in clinics at existing Wal-Mart Supercenters, starting in Atlanta and Dallas. By the end of the summer, company officials should have a better handle on how many will open in Arizona, Morales said~~~~~~~~~~~WMW 2/28/08

Confidential Wal-Mart Memo RevealedFor Immediate Release
Tuesday, October 25, 2005

Washington, D.C., October 26, 2005 – Today’s New York Times reports on a confidential Wal-Mart memo, obtained by Wal-Mart Watch, that outlines their strategy to cut spending on employee health care, hire more part-time employees, and discourage unhealthy people from working at Wal-Mart.

In response, Wal-Mart Watch Executive Director Andrew Grossman issues the following statement:

The mythology of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. has been shattered by the revelations in this newly-obtained health benefits memo. This company has been selling a false image of itself to the public. Anyone who truly wishes to understand Wal-Mart need look no further than this document. We thank the good person or persons inside the Wal-Mart company who bravely shared this with us. While we are appalled, it is Wal-Mart’s associates who stand to suffer most.

Below are excerpts from the story:

An internal memo sent to Wal-Mart’s board of directors proposes numerous ways to hold down spending on health care and other benefits while seeking to minimize damage to the retailer’s reputation. Among the recommendations are hiring more part-time workers and discouraging unhealthy people from working at Wal-Mart.

In the memorandum, M. Susan Chambers, Wal-Mart’s executive vice president for benefits, also recommends reducing 401(k) contributions and wooing younger, and presumably healthier, workers by offering education benefits. The memo voices concern that workers with seven years’ seniority earn more than workers with one year’s seniority, but are no more productive. To discourage unhealthy job applicants, Ms. Chambers suggests that Wal-Mart arrange for “all jobs to include some physical activity (e.g., all cashiers do some cart-gathering).”

The memo acknowledged that Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, had to walk a fine line in restraining benefit costs because critics had attacked it for being stingy on wages and health coverage. Ms. Chambers acknowledged that 46 percent of the children of Wal-Mart’s 1.33 million United States employees were uninsured or on Medicaid.

Under fire because less than 45 percent of its workers receive company health insurance, Wal-Mart announced a new plan on Monday that seeks to increase participation by allowing some employees to pay just $11 a month in premiums. Some health experts praised the plan for making coverage more affordable, but others criticized it, noting that full-time Wal-Mart employees, who earn on average around $17,500 a year, could face out-of-pocket expenses of $2,500 a year or more…

Acknowledging that Wal-Mart has image problems, Ms. Chambers wrote: “Wal-Mart’s critics can easily exploit some aspects of our benefits offering to make their case; in other words, our critics are correct in some of their observations. Specifically, our coverage is expensive for low-income families, and Wal-Mart has a significant percentage of associates and their children on public assistance...”

The memo, prepared with the help of McKinsey & Company, said the board was to consider the recommendations in November. But the memo said that three top Wal-Mart officials - its chief financial officer, its top human relations executive and its executive vice president for legal and corporate affairs - had “received the recommendations enthusiastically.”

…The memo noted that Wal-Mart workers “are getting sicker than the national population, particularly in obesity-related diseases,” including diabetes and coronary artery disease. The memo said Wal-Mart workers tended to overuse emergency rooms and underuse prescriptions and doctor visits, perhaps from previous experience with Medicaid. The memo noted, “The least healthy, least productive associates are more satisfied with their benefits than other segments and are interested in longer careers with Wal-Mart."…

“It will be far easier to attract and retain a healthier work force than it will be to change behavior in an existing one,” the memo said. “These moves would also dissuade unhealthy people from coming to work at Wal-Mart.”

Ron Pollack, executive director of Families U.S.A., a health care consumer-advocacy group, criticized the memo for recommending that more workers move into health plans with high deductibles.

“Their people are paying a very substantial portion of their earnings out of pocket for health care,” he said. “These plans will cause these workers and their families to defer or refrain from getting needed care.”

The memo noted that 38 percent of Wal-Mart workers spent more than one-sixth of their Wal-Mart income on health care last year.---WMW----(The entire Susan Chambers memo is available here . Just type it in ,in the WMW search engine.)
