Thanks to reader Jason for sending us along these pics.

A Wal-Mart in Southern California is selling $1.00 face paint - “No Smear Makeup Crayons” - for kids’ Halloween costumes. And they’re not even trying to hide it - the front of the package states that the product that is a “choking hazard”, and CONTAINS LEAD! which is “known to the state of California to cause birth defects.”

Let’s see how fast we can get these pulled from shelves.

Crazy Cal thinks low-level lead poisoning keeps a populace docile and manageable. I wonder if any lipstick has lead in it? I’d hate to think we were poisoning the pig!

Give me a break. This is a standard warning required by a ridiculous California law that anything that might contain *any* amount of lead (or carcinogens), even at the borderline of detectability. Enough companies have been sued by not having the warning (even though their products are perfectly safe) that lots of products just put the warning on anything sold in CA just to save themselves the hassle. Just try going into t public building in CA that doesn’t have a warning that carcinogenic substances might be inside…

Total non story.

I would say that this surprises me but we ARE talking about the folks at Wal-Mart.

Regardless, this has gotten mentions on several blogs, including Wal-Mart Watch (http://www.walmartwatch.com) and What The Christ? (http://www.whatthechrist.com). Second blog has some content that might get you in trouble at work. Browse at your own risk.

Okay, guys.  You may think this is unbelievable, but lead is an important ingredient in long-wearing lipstick.  That’s a fact.  If you’re a woman and you wear that 8-hour or more lipstick, you are consuming lead every day.  There’s no reason to believe that this warning isn’t perfectly valid.  If they put it in lipstick to make it last, why not in face paint?

Well at least they don’t lie if they don’t try to hide it. Leave it up to the customer if they will buy it or not.

You have been warned and that is a good thing so thumbs up from me for being honest !!!

I have the same package as Jbouchard in NJ!  Thank goodness I have not used it.  Why is this warning not on all packages distributed in all states?

Protip:

If the package says it contains lead, and you don’t like lead, don’t buy it.

I just saved you all a shit ton of problems!

Oh, and the State of California has some pretty strict guidelines when it comes to lead… You should look them up. You may not worry as much after you do.

...and you don’t like lead...

Lead is a very strong poison. A single high, toxic dose of lead can cause severe emergency symptoms. However, it is more common for lead poisoning to build up slowly over time. This occurs from repeated exposure to small amounts of lead. In this case, there may not be any obvious symptoms, but the lead can still cause serious health problems over time, such as difficulty sleeping or lowered IQ in children.

Lead is much more harmful to children than adults because it can affect children’s developing nerves and brains. The younger the child, the more harmful lead can be. Unborn children are the most vulnerable.

What’s not to like?

I work for Hot Topic and one of our skirts has that exact label attached to it. The reason being california now has a law that products that contain even trace amounts of hazardous material must be labeled.
