Wal-Mart To Stop Carrying Over 1,000 Magazines

The New York Post reports that Wal-Mart is planning to stop carrying more than 1,000 magazine titles, essentially crippling the industry. The retailer’s motivations for the move are unclear, but said one company executive: “I used to think pouring salt on slugs was fun, but this is WAAY better! Maybe even more fun than when we put all those locally-owned supermarkets out of business! I mean, this is freakin’ AWESOME!” From Advertising Age:

The New York Post reports that Wal-Mart is tossing more than 1,000 magazines from the racks in its stores, sending a shock wave through the industry. Wal-Mart, which released its official purge list Jan. 15, is believed to be responsible for generating more than 20% of all retail magazine sales in the U.S. One of the biggest corporate losers appears to be Meredith Publishing. Its flagship Better Homes & Gardens is out, as is sibling service magazine Ladies’ Home Journal. Family Circle stays, however. Read who else is out, and who gets to stay.

Not to steal WMW’s thunder, Writing on the Wal did a piece on this a bit earlier today, entitled “WooHoo The New Yorker made the cut!! “The link in the last sentence(click the word “this")of the article is well worth the trip there, believe me. “This” links to an April 2,2007 story about WalMart and its operatives at Edelman(among other topics)-it’s called “Selling WalMart”,by Jeffrey Goldberg. Who knew WalMart had Democratic operatives manning the P.R. war room? This is very informative to those of us ( such as myself) unfamiliar with how the spin gets spun. Darn,I wish I hadn’t let my subscription expire to The New Yorker:and no, I won’t be picking one up at WalMart, that’s for certain.

Big deal, now the smaller stores will be able to sell more magazines, that should be a ‘good’ thing for the anti crowd, but, instead, they cry about it!!

I especially like 2 things about this article:

1.) How they say “one company executive”, said such and such, WHAT is his/her NAME?  It is easy to say SOMEONE said something, when you don’t have to prove who it was!!

2.) Using the term, “essentially crippling the industry” and then going on to say, that Wal-Mart sold 20% of all retail magazines, which means that 80% are sold elsewhere, hardly crippling the industry!!  All this means is people will have to shop somewhere else to get their magazines, thus possibly throwing more business to other stores, in sales other than magazines, which is what the Wal-Mart protesters say they want in the first place!!

Seems, they will complain about almost anything!!  First, they complain about taking sales away from other stores, then they complain about them giving it back!!

Given the Clintons’ long-standing connections to the WM organization, how does this surprise you, ddrb?

bbrd:I fail to make the connection on your segue. This is to me a prime ezample of spin, especially on this site. It was a very informative article to me about how the “sausage” is made.

As my sainted mother used to say:

“No matter how thin you slice it, it’s still baloney!”

“What would you rather EAT, our baloney, or their Bull Shit”?

You seem to forget, RDS, all us anti Wal-Marters are rich and, as we all know: “Life is like a shit sandwich, the more bread you have the less shit you have to eat”, so we don’t have to eat your bullshit.

ma in : Thanks to corporate lobbying(including WalMart), COOL labeling (Country of Origin) is not required,so it’s hard to know if it’s imported. My guess would be domestic-bologna from Bentonville.

What’s the matter Matty boy?  Shouldn’t you be paying to talk to women on the phone right about now?  Matthew has been known to frequent those telephone dating lines they advertise on late night television.  Did you meet both of your wives on there Matt?
