As Wal-Mart expanded into groceries in the 1990s, it “drew the attention of the labor bosses,” Scott said. “And so the harder they pushed at us, the more we pushed back. And in that process, we just built these barriers that assumed that anybody who criticized us must somehow have evil intentions.”

ANOTHER one bites the dust:
Richard L. Bond, President and CEO of Tyson Foods Inc. of Springdale, announced this morning that he is leaving the company, effective immediately. Leland Tollett, former chairman and CEO of the company, has agreed to return to the company as President and CEO on an interim basis until a permanent successor has been chosen.
Arkansas Business reported that Bond “received compensation valued by the company at about $4.9 million in fiscal 2008, according to an analysis of a proxy statement filed [December 30] with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Last year his compensation was valued at $12.9 million.”
“After seven years of helping lead or leading the world’s largest meat company, I have decided it is in both my best interest personally, and the best interest of the company for me to move on and pursue other interests,” he said.
This is the second announced change in major corporate management seen in Northwest Arkansas during recent weeks. Lee Scott told Wal-Mart that he will retire as president and CEO as of the close of business on January 31, and the Board has elected Mike Duke as his replacement.

Can Labor Reive the American Dream? Labor averted an American nightmare, yesterday:
This Miracle Brought to You by America’s Unions
By: emptywheel Friday January 16, 2009
They’re calling it a miracle--the successful landing of a US Airways jet in the Hudson and subsequent rescue of all 155 passengers. They’re detailing the heroism of all involved, starting with the pilot and including cabin crew, ferry crews, and first responders. What they’re not telling you is that just about every single one of these heros is a union member.
There’s the pilot:
What might have been a catastrophe in New York — one that evoked the feel if not the scale of the Sept. 11 attack — was averted by a pilot’s quick thinking and deft maneuvers,
On board, the pilot, Chesley B. Sullenberger III, 57, unable to get back to La Guardia, had made a command decision to avoid densely populated areas and try for the Hudson,
When all were out, the pilot walked up and down the aisle twice to make sure the plane was empty, officials said.
Sullenberger is a former national committee member and the former safety chairman for the Airline Pilots Association and now represented by US Airline Pilots Association. He--and his union--have fought to ensure pilots get the kind of safety training to pull off what he did yesterday.
Then there are the flight attendants:
One passenger, Elizabeth McHugh, 64, of Charlotte, seated on the aisle near the rear, said flight attendants shouted more instructions: feet flat on the floor, heads down, cover your heads.
They are members of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA. Yesterday’s accident should remind all of us that flight attendants are first and foremost safety professionals--they should not be treated like cocktail waitresses.
There are the air traffic controllers:
The pilot radioed air traffic controllers on Long Island that his plane had sustained a “double bird strike.”
They’re represented by the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. Someday, they’ll rename National Airport for the work these men and women do to keep us safe in the air.
There are the ferry crews:
As the first ferry nudged up alongside, witnesses said, some passengers were able to leap onto the decks. Others were helped aboard by ferry crews.
They’re represented by the Seafarers International Union. They provide safety training to their members so they’re prepared for events like yesterday’s accident.
There are the cops and firemen:
Helicopters brought wet-suited police divers, who dropped into the water to help with the rescues.
They’re represented by the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association and the Uniformed Firefighters Association and Uniformed Fire Officers Association. They’re the men and women who performed so heroically on 9/11--and they’ve been fighting to make sure first responders get the equipment to do this kind of thing.
Bob Corker and Richard Shelby like to claim that union labor is a failed business model.
But I haven’t heard much about Bob Corker and Richard Shelby saving 155 people’s lives.
Update: Sullenberger’s union membership corrected, UFOA added.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~NOTE: Thank God for the well trained and professional union members. God bless ‘em all!

“Thank God for the well trained and professional union members. God bless ‘em all!”
Exactly right ddrb. The grace of God is written all over this remarkable event. The training and performance of this airline crew, the aerospace design and manufacturer, ferry crews and emergency rescue personnel ( a vast union network of skilled professionals ) showing that you are more likely to be killed at a Black Friday WalMart stampede in New York than an airliner crash in the Hudson.

“The Iconoclast: We’re Number One! Jan 5, 2009”
This makes it sound that The Iconoclast is Number One, when actually it is about the U of Arkansas being Number One!! BTW: That’s the SAME U of Arkansas that Wal-Mart supports!!
“Arkansas Blog: A bright light in Fayetteville Oct 29, 2007”
Did you read the COMMENTS in that issue of The Iconoclast? Sounds like I’m not the only one who thinks Jonah is a KOOK!!
How about this one from RickBaber: “I think this is just a made up letter to get a little blog traffic up.
Or this one from Archaeopteryx: “Just a tongue in cheek assumption by Tebbetts.”
“I would encourage ALL here to go to Jonah Tebbets Iconoclast website and evaluate for themselves ,and form their OWN opinion.”

Ken V,
Here’s a little story, that might put some perspective on what you said in you last post!!
[A very self-important college freshman attending a recent football game took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen sitting next to him why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation.
“You grew up in a different world, actually an almost primitive one,” the student said, loud enough for many of those nearby to hear. “The young people of today are much more advanced than people your age. We grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking on the moon and the internet. We have cell phones, nuclear energy, electric and hydrogen cars, computers, automated manufacturing, amazing technologies, and”, pausing to take another drink of beer.
The senior took advantage of the break in the student’s litany and said, “You’re right, son. We didn’t have those things when we were young, so we invented them. Now, you arrogant little shit, what are YOU doing for the next generation?”
The applause was resounding.]
Therefore, instead of bitching about Wal-Mart, what are YOU doing to come up with a “Better Idea” and put it into action? Complaining about things is EASY, doing something worthwhile, is a lot HARDER!!

Complaining about things is EASY...
Interpreting my posts as “complaining” only illustrates your lack of cognitive abilities.

Ken V,
“old ideas are old ideas”
But, some old ideas are ‘good’ ideas, think the Two Person Family Unit, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights!! And, like I said, if you don’t LIKE the old ideas, don’t throw them out, until YOU come up with a ‘new idea’ to replace it and remember, an idea is only an idea, until it is put into practice and it is shown to work, Wal-Mart has proved that Sam’s ‘new idea’ was one that worked!!
BTW: Isn’t the UNION IDEA an old idea?

How about a new Declaration of Independence? To wit:
“While our problems may be new, what is required to overcome them is not,” said the president-elect. “What is required is the same perseverance and idealism that our founders displayed. What is required is a NEW declaration of independence, NOT just in our nation, BUT in our own lives - from ideology and small thinking, prejudice and bigotry - an appeal not to our easy instincts but to our better angels."~~~~Barack Obama~~~~
NOTE: From your lips to President-elect Obama’s ears,RDS. Especially that LAST sentence.....it sounded as though he were speaking to you, personally,IMHO,Bob.

ddrb,
It’s strange how you can hear something, but yet not HEAR what was said!!
“an appeal not to our easy instincts but to our better angels”
What I heard, was that ‘we shouldn’t always look for the EASY way out with things and should respect the rights and opinions of others and we should work hard and get along with others’!!
Maybe, some day, when you get older (and you will), and you look back on your life, you may realize how out of whack today’s generations are in their thinking patterns and how much harm, ‘chasing the Jones’ causes people!! Think of this: In the 1960’s, a top of the line Chevy (Super Sport), cost $3,000.00, by the 1980’s, that same class of vehicle cost $10,000.00 and by 2005, that same class of car was about $25,000.00!! If things keep going the way they are, that same class of vehicle might cost $60,000.00 by the year 2025, who will be able to afford that? Would you? I just looked at a ‘new’ pickup (Ford F-150), in 1965, a pickup cost around $1,500.00, that one I looked at, was $32,000.00 (after rebates), it normally cost over $37,000.00!! Take a minute and figure out what the INTEREST on a $32,000.00 vehicle would be with a 6 year loan at 5% (if you could get that), you’ll be amazed!! And, your payments would be about $655.00/mo.!!

He is a centerist, not a left-winger, just like I am!! He understands that one-size doesn’t fit all and that people have to work for what they get in life, there’s no free ride!!

READ IT AGAIN,BOB:
“As Obama took the stage on Saturday, Ledbetter sat in the front row of the exclusive high-rise section for the 16 specific, “invited guests.” Beaming a bit with optimism over the political future, she discussed the special relationship that had developed between her and the president-elect.
“He is a people person and I can tell you one thing, he touched my heart,” said Ledbetter. “My husband was buried on December the 15th. He [Obama] called me on December the 16th to offer his condolences. And you can imagine how much work he had going on at that time and how many plans and how much he had on his mind. And yet he took the time.”
Moments later, Obama took to the stage as Ledbetter sat, just feet away on his right. He promised onlookers that he would bring to the White House their voices and concerns and asked in return that they only recommit themselves to the idea that politics can be a force of good.
“While our problems may be new, what is required to overcome them is not,” said the president-elect. “What is required is the same perseverance and idealism that our founders displayed. What is required is a new declaration of independence, not just in our nation, but in our own lives - from ideology and small thinking, prejudice and bigotry - an appeal not to our easy instincts but to our better angels."~~~~
[Stein,Jan.17,09-Huff Po, “...Orbit of Obama~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE: The statements made by Obama were NOT on the campaign trail, they were made this past Saturday. He’s ALREADY been elected . He will be inaugurated as our new President tomorrow. I can’t imagine ANYTHING Obama has in common with you.

ddrb,
What does: “the same perseverance and idealism that our founders displayed.”, mean to you? Does it mean welfare, higher taxes and union imposed benefits?
And, what does: “not just in our nation, but in our own lives - from ideology and small thinking, prejudice and bigotry”, mean to you? Does it mean, changing the way people THINK today and get back to the basics that made this country in the world, or continue with our present ways?
This weekend, I saw Barack on C-Span ‘Book TV’, where he was speaking back in 2004 at the book signing for his book ‘Dreams from My Father’ and just after he was elected to the Senate!! In his talk, he noted how he learned from his father and his time in Indonesia and Africa, how people have to work hard and pull themselves up by their bootstraps!! He also, said that hardship teaches lessons, that can’t be learned by people who don’t experience hardship and people can’t appreciate Freedom, unless they have to struggle to get it!!
Many young people today take their Freedom for granted and don’t realize what it took others to get that Freedom for us!! I think Barack will try to educate people how important Freedom is, and that you don’t get there through Socialism, Small Thinking, Prejudice and Bigotry!! And, we all have to work together, not fight one another, because we are all in it together!!
Hopefully, he will try to end partisanship in government and the constant fighting and feuding in Congress!!

That may be your opinion of me, but I could care less of what YOU think, because you don’t know me, so you haven’t a clue as to who I am!! All you have is your twisted interpretations of what I have said!! People who know me, know that I have a very ‘open mind’ and not a bigoted bone in my body!! Why do such abnormal devotees to the WalMart cult exist? Media manipulation efforts have internet frauds and fakes paid for by WalMart in a public relations scam to deceive Americans with a culture of ignorance. WalMart’s ‘war room’ is a paid whorehouse of internet liars and frauds to strangely and irrationally defend a ruthless business practice. Since the WalMart/Bentonville hostility to people and labor is in policy immoral and often illegal, they must have propaganda to survive in this communications era.

What is so private about telling what STATE you live in or what field of labor you work in? But, it could be quite TELLING, if people found out that your situation, was in direct conflict with the positions of others, for example, when we found out that Screwedby was a field producer for the movie, “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices”!!
