WalmartWatch Phone Campaign Strikes a Nerve with Wal-Mart
The Benton County Daily Record today broke a story which has been taking place on phone lines throughout Arkansas for the past 5 days.
Walmart-Watch.com and its parent nonprofit organization, the Center for Community and Corporate Ethics, struck a nerve within Wal-Mart when the group launched an automated phone message campaign in the backyard of the Bentonville-based company on Monday.
By Thursday afternoon, the world’s largest retailer fought back with a cease-and-desist letter that the group summarily dismissed. “Legally speaking, we find their letter utterly meritless,” Walmart-Watch. com spokeswoman Tracy Sefl said. “We will continue the (calls) on the schedule we have planned.”
The story continues with an official comment from Wal-Mart, and a rebuttal from us:
Wal-Mart spokesman Marty Heires said he doesn’t think the messages will result in anything. “We have alerted our associates that these calls are being made,” Heires said. “We think this is a desperate attempt to try to collect information and embarrass the company.”
Despite the company’s feeling about the campaign’s effectiveness, it sent a letter to the CCCE Thursday afternoon requesting that it discontinue the phone calls. “We believe that you designed the tone and content of your computer-generated telephone message to create confusion about the identity of the caller,” the letter from Wal-Mart’s legal department states. “We have in fact received reports from individuals who have mistakenly believed that Wal-Mart sponsored the message.”
...
The company also said in the letter that it felt that the phone message campaign was intentionally launched on the eve of the annual shareholders meeting. In fact, hours before the letter was sent, Sefl didn’t hesitate to say that it was part of the plan. “It was absolutely timed to coincide with the shareholders meeting,” she said.
After receiving the letter, Sefl was equally brazen. “My response to it is this is a company with mounting legal and public relations problems,” she said.
She said “it was a safe assumption” that the automated phone message campaign would be widened to a national audience. “We are keenly interested in people’s responses,” she said. “Our phone lines have been absolutely nuts.”
This isn’t the last you will hear of this story, stay tuned for more.
Update: Our Executive Director Andrew Grossman will be appearing on local NBC and ABC affiliates in Arkansas to discuss this story, we’ll get video for you later this afternoon if we can.

I am delighted that at least SOME people are waking up to the immense Walton Empire. I have long encouraged everyone to avoid shopping at Wal-Mart and it is good to know that now what has seemed my personal idiosyncracy is actually reflective of a new progressivism. I cheer those employees of Wal-Mart who are brave enough to take a stand against the outrageous practices of what can only be described as corporate tyranny.

Keep up the good work. Just remember that the first evil empire is the Bush Adminstration. The second evil empire is Walmart. Their common goal is greed and helping out only those that will benefit themselves.
Still can’t believe that Walmart is coming to Chicago!

I am in a customer service position and have the opportunity to speak to hundreds of people a day. Whenever
the opportunity arises, I talk to people about the immoral and
unethical practices of wal-mart and how they have 97,000
lawsuits against them. Many of these lawsuits have been
brought about by many former disenfranchised employees. I
am proud to say I have never set foot in a wal-mart and I
never will. Anytime I hear about unfair practices going on in
the realm of business, I refer to the tactics as the, “Walmartization” of America.

I personally received one of these phone calls this week, and will attest it was pretty confusing. First, the voice said something about my name was given as someone who would be willing to help point out wrongdoing in the company. While I was still puzzling over this, the voice went on to say something about walmatwatch.com, so here I am checking it out. As a former Wal-Mart employee, I have probably seen about everything—but wrongdoing I have not. If I had witnessed any wrongdoing, I would have reported it to the proper level of authority and nipped it in the bud right then, not wait and tell it to some organization who seems to have some kind of hidden agenda...probably backed by a union? I have never felt the need to pay a union to speak up for me.
Before you ask, I was not among the “insiders” attending the Shareholders’ meeting today, and I’m not a mindless idiot. Ask some of my former managers that and they will laugh, as I can get outspoken when the occasion warrants it. I just do the speaking out to the right people and get whatever it is taken care of. I noticed some of the comments here are signed by “unknown” or “somewhere”...why can’t they sign their names to their comments?

Hey, Ellen, I notice you’re from -Ta Da! - Bentonville, AR! Gee, is that why you think all one has to do (if working at Wal-Mart) is let someone higher up know if there’s any problem and it will get fixed? That’s not the way it works for those of us who do not live by Wal-Mart’s home in Bentonville. I know because I, along with others, have tried.
Also, what do unions have to do with any of this? Yes, I’m sure there are union activists behind a lot of bad-mouthing of Wal-Mart, but in all my years of working at W-M, I have never been approached by any union member. Not once!
And, while you were working at W-M, did you get into any kind of management position? I was a customer service manager. And all of us (new CSMs and above) had to attend a seminar for one day that spewed more propaganda than I have ever heard before in my life. Did you know that W-M executives equate the word “seniority” with unions? We were told to watch out for anyone who uses the word “seniority” because that’s a union word! Yeah - I’ll bet you didn’t know what lengths W-M will go to ensure there are no unions. Don’t get me wrong - I do not like the majority of unions. But for someone to tell me that “seniority” means “union” instead of “loyalty”, that’s when I began to see how paranoid W-M is to lose control of it’s employees.
It’s a sad situation all around.

This is a new low for your union - you didn’t have the public on your side before - and you certainly don’t have them now…
If Walmart was really that evil - wouldn’t the majority of employees come to you - instead of you harassing them?
Grow up!

Youre rants and raves about the company are useless. I as a WOMAN am very happy with my job and always have been. My carrer with Wal Mart has unlimited opprotunities The shareholders meeting was very positive for everyone who attended. Give me a W-A-L-M-A-R-T!!!!! Where you shop everyday for low prices! ALWAYS

WELL, SO WHAT????? All this proves is:
1- you are as biased as those you condemn, and
2- you know how to find out who has registered the domain name of this site. Anyone who is halfway Net-savvy can do this.
I’m sure most of those who have posted here know who runs the site, and choose to post anyway. Mr/Ms Kleiber (if that’s your real name), you do not impress us.
BTW- I have been in the Baltimore-area Wal-Marts and found them to be the worst stores around. They’re dirty, disheveled, always out of what I wanted etc. So I have already had a reason not to shop there. The scandalous nature of the company is just one more reason for me.
And I am not adding my e-mail address, or my last name, because I don’t want you to have them.

Frank,
How does stating a fact make Kleiber biased? It may not be a fact that you want to acknowledge, but it is a fact that the UFCW registered this domain name.
If you do a little more research, you’ll find out that SEIU and the UFCW were crowing a few months ago about how they had $25 million to spend on this campaign.

oh my all the bad mouthing of unions by people who really don`t understand what a union is all about. look up the word in a dictionary! or better yet attend a union class and find out how they got started (uaw) i think you`ll be very very surprised. as a matter of fact i dare you! unions try to get you better wages and health care among many other things. unions are no different that america , they are what you make of them. as a former union (uaw) worker i will say this , I`d give anything to be employed at a union shop again. maybe then i wouldn`t have to work 72 hours a week to support my family and then i could spend some more time with them and yes i really mean 72 hours a week each and every dam dreadful week. you have no ideal of the things i have to miss like scoccer games and tee ball games and why? because they shipped my job over to canada and germany. so next time you go running your mouth you better be careful as to who might hear you! because if i did you`d get two earfuls from one really pissed off guy.

Walmartwatch.com wants Wal-Mart to stop growing.
Walmartwatch.com wants cities and towns to prevent Wal-Mart from opening new stores.
Walmartwatch.com wants people to stop shopping at Wal-Mart.
... and yet the UFCW wants you to trust them with negotiating your contract and with your continued job security?
That is pure sophomoric silliness. UFCW is a business. What UFCW wants is 1.5 million associates to mail in their dues money.
With 2000 people lining up for 200 positions at every new Supercenter they have very little bargaining power. They know that. They realize that a union negotiated contract won’t be any better than the conditions you currently work under. On the contrary it might be worse.
Walmartwatch.com wants people to shop elsewhere.
Do you really want the people behind Walmartwatch.com to be responsible for YOUR job security?
UFCW is a business. It wants your dues money. Nothing more.

Oh, my god you people still don’t get it! Ok Wal-Mart doesn’t want my money either they just want to be my friend right? Gee how silly of me I thought they wanted my money! Boy do I feel stupid. lets me see if I was working for Wal-Mart and we got a union in and lets suppose that I get a 25 cent an hour raise at 40 hours a week that’s 10 dollars extra on my check each week. That’s 40 dollars a month. Union dues are usually 2 hours of your current pay rate (5 dollars an hour = 10 dollars a month for union dues if you make $7.50 an hour your union dues are 15 dollars a month) 40 dollars - 10 dollars= 30 more dollars in my pocket. Ya I guess I see now why unions are so BAD shame on them for trying to put more money in my pocket. I want that money to go to that CEO who’s living in that mansion on the hill after all doesn’t he have the worst job of all? he probably would be fired if he showed up to work 10 minutes late and what’s worst of all is he probably get a severance package worth only a few hundred thousand dollars witch means I don’t think he would qualify for unemployment. Them darn unions what is wrong with them don’t they know we need Wal-Mart as a friend and not money in our pockets!

No Jason. I don’t think YOU get it.
UFCW wants the Wal-Mart associates to feel like they NEED them.
UFCW wants the Wal-Mart associates to think that they will get more money, better benefits, and improved job-security if they join the union.
IMPROVED JOB SECURITY
The UFCW started this campaign aimed at halting the growth of Wal-Mart. A campaign designed to persuade customers to shop elsewhere!!
Does that sound like a goal that is consistant with improving job security?
If I were a Wal-Mart associate I would wonder how UFCW intends to improve my job-security and my quality of life when their own website is aimed at damaging the company and encouraging customers to shop elsewhere!
Well UFCW? Here’s your opportunity to answer. How can UFCW and walmartwatch.com possibly have the same goals? On the one hand you want Wal-Mart to fail. On the other you need it to survive in order to provide “industry leading pay and benefits” to its associates.
Once the world realizes who is behind walmartwatch.com, I think the UFCW is going to have a big PR problem…
uh oh.

Jason it seems you truly are mixed up.You see Wal Mart is a BUSINESS.The goal is to make money. If a worker feels he is mistreated he may LEAVE.If you don’t like Wal Mart,DONT SHOP THERE.But please UFCW,Wal Mart bashers, and anti Wal Mart people, stop whining, don’t shop there, and let people,(employees and customers)make their OWN CHOICE what to do.....a little thing we like to call FREEDOM.

Mitchell, Mike and John, you obviously need to get out of your ivory towers and do some traveling. Then you can see at first hand what Wal-Mart is really about.
Ride down Main Street in one of the many small towns that were Wal-Mart-ized, and see all the shuttered businesses, closed down by unfair Wal-Mart competition.
Talk to people who lost their jobs because of Wal-Mart. Find out how many are now on welfare- at YOUR expense.
Talk to people who managed to get jobs at Wal-Mart- for about half of what they formerly made. Ask them how they support their families.
If Wal-Mart was a responsible company deserving of respect, there would be no need for a site like this. But there is, so the site exists.
If you want reinforcement, go listen to Rush Limbaugh.
Frank in Baltimore

Frank,
You’re blaming Wal-Mart for something that started when the company was just a small, regional retailer. I’m from one of these small towns that you refer to. There used to be a bunch of union jobs there. Unfortunately due to either inept management, lack of innovation or investment in technology, or perhaps the bloated salaries and benefits of their union workers, these places went out of business. Things that can be more cheaply manufactured elsewhere are.
I’ll bet that you try to avoid shopping at Walmart. Walk around your house and read a few labels. Walk around any competing retailer and do so. Where are these products made? I doesn’t matter which retailer you favor, their products are going to come from all over the globe. That is the economy we live in, and blaming Walmart for globalization isn’t going to bring back the glory days of union jobs.
What, exactly, is unfair about Walmart’s competition? That they leverage size and efficiency to provide consumers with low prices? Walmart didn’t start as a big corporation. It started with one store and grew because it was better than its competition and carefully controlled its costs. One great thing about Walmart is that when it squeezes costs out of its supply chain, it passes those savings on to its customers.

I absolutely smile when I hear the new radio commercial
telling the horrible truth about Wally World.I Have NEVER spent a cent at WalMart, and Never will!I’am a PROUD Union member and Union Stuard for UFCW 876.For those of You that think saving a buck is good for You ,THINK again,it really hurts Your community,Your Neighbor’s,it erodes Everyones ability to receive a fair wage, health coverage,
and just as important,American Made products. When will You learn to look at the BIG picture of business, instead of the nickel You really Don’t save. For those Unfortunate folk’s who work there, before You bash Union’s,really find out what You could gain from one, instead of beleiving what WalMart tell’s You.Look in the mirror,do You appear to be a lamb, meekly lead to slaughter? Then DON"T act like ONE!
