Injustice In Healthcare

Dear Mr. Lee Scott,

As a person of faith and conscience I urge you, in celebration and remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, to take the moral steps needed to ensure affordable health care for all Wal-Mart employees.

According to Wal-Mart's associate benefits booklet, health care options for employees and families have a deductible of $1,000 for individuals and $3,000 for families. The booklet also states that Wal-Mart employees must endure long waits in order to qualify for benefits: six months for full-time employees and one year for part-time employees. Furthermore, in the twenty-four states that release data on companies whose employees receive state-funded health care, Wal-Mart tops the list in all of them.

Dr. Martin Luther King once said,
"Of all forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane."

Wal-Mart's own founder, Sam Walton clearly agreed when he said,
"You can't create a team spirit when the situation is so one-sided, when management gets so much and workers get so little of the pie."

So to honor the memory of Dr. King and to reflect the spirit of your founder, I urge Wal-Mart to provide affordable health care to all their employees.

Jeremiah 30:17 says
"For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord; because they called thee an outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after."

In keeping with scripture and as a person of faith and conscience, I adamantly insist that Wal-Mart employees be provided affordable health care, giving them the ability to properly take care of their families. Keep Dr. Martin L. King's legacy alive by example, reach for excellence with your own employees.
