Wal-Mart Watch Executive Director David Nassar issued the following statement in response to today’s Wall Street Journal story, “Wal-Mart Political Poll Shows Candidates Even Among Women”:
“Wal-Mart is right to believe that its shoppers will play a key role in this year’s election. The basic economic problems Wal-Mart Moms face - decreasing wages, poor health care, and a loss of jobs - are problems that average Americans face every day.
“The policies of the next President must address these problems - problems that Wal-Mart’s low wage, import-driven business model has helped create. Wal-Mart understands this and fears change. As reported earlier in the Wall Street Journal, Wal-Mart is so frightened by change that it has begun telling its employees how to vote.
“Instead of waiting for the election, Wal-Mart should immediately help its shoppers by supporting policies such as higher wages, better health care and keeping quality jobs in the country - policies which help average Americans, as well as its own work force. That’s something Wal-Mart Moms on both sides of the aisle could support.
“If Wal-Mart Moms vote their economic interests, they will vote to change Wal-Mart.”
